Born just before the depression started, then hit with WW2. They were taught that you saved things, because it might not be available tomorrow.
When moved my aging parents out of their house into an apartment, and my sister and I itemized the contents of the freezer. There were 32 packages of cauliflower, which dad woudn't eat. Yet, 2 weeks later, mom came home with a big cauliflower from the farmer's market - "it was a good price"!
My grown kids recently told me that they didn't want their baby books (WHAT?) - it hurt, but they all went into the garbage.... A few really special pictures were saved, but the rest got tossed, and the task continues.Jannettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11650623703551449681noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5028034539470622344.post-62891913697456844122022-06-26T07:04:33.141-04:002022-06-26T07:04:33.141-04:00OMG --- I can relate!! She left in an ambulance, so had no time to get things. She had lard in the freezer and it was so old, it was rancid. She wanted it! My brother and I had fun pitching all this stuff into the garden. The neighbor's dog wasn't even interested!! Funny how they treasure the darnest things. My parents sound just like yours -- as they would have said -- it could have been cooked for the dog! Poor dogs indeed!! Thanks for the chuckle!! And we feel GUILTY as heck as well -- they are still alive and now we have to live with those lies whenever we visit. What did we do and when? We dare not raise the subject of ditching stuff or it causes too much angst. Neutral subjects are best!!! The stuff was mostly outside in out buildings and one particular shed had a freezer in it. This freezer contained meat that had been acquired somewhere at a bargain price and stashed away in this nearly antique freezer (they had another freezer in the house which my mum kept kind of rotated) I was married and left home but there was always this fear that we’d be served this prehistoric meat when we went there. My parents still travelled at the time so I took it on myself to empty this freezer while they were away, using the “excuse” that the freezer had quit. We duly took the frozen meat, caked in ice kind of frozen, to the dump. On their return we told them the freezer quit, meat was spoiled and dumped. The first comment was could it have been cooked for the dog? Poor dog! The funny thing is that freezer was never plugged in again, I said it was broken and my dad took me at my word, I still, over 20 years later have a pang of guilt for telling my dad a bare faced lie, but it had to be done before someone died of food poisoning!
Gillian Hnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5028034539470622344.post-35974395556371983092022-06-24T06:32:54.843-04:002022-06-24T06:32:54.843-04:00OH -- that's horrible. I tell you air travel ...OH -- that's horrible. I tell you air travel is NOT what it's made out to be and it's getting worse. And you are right -- clots can happen from flying, so we should all take care! Hope you feel better soon!Elainehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09654762599199404214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5028034539470622344.post-68893999968677725442022-06-24T06:32:06.837-04:002022-06-24T06:32:06.837-04:00OH MY GOSH --- I will get there one day!! But you ...OH MY GOSH --- I will get there one day!! But you are so right -- imagine a lifetime of collecting those things left by guests or unwanted purchases and they add up! Big time! I know that round two will be a whole lot easier and then the subsequent quick clean sweeps will take minutes! I'm on steroids but the dr blamed it on flying. Better than a clot I guess!!Anne Kirbynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5028034539470622344.post-28221897205576132272022-06-23T09:42:56.383-04:002022-06-23T09:42:56.383-04:00Your pics the other day moved me to go through eve...Your pics the other day moved me to go through every cupboard and closet again at our small mountain cabin. What went to the thrift store? 2 queen flannel comforters (replaced by quilts I've made), 2 pair of slippers left by guests, 2 rubbermaid containers that haven't been used in several years, some wall plaques that are "meh", a set of cotton sheets (we prefer flannel up there), a tablecloth left by a party guest, a golf shirt hub hasn't worn in 10y+, a robe I haven't worn in at least that long, 6 water fight guns leftover from a party....and 5 towels taken to the nearest pet rescue for the dog wash room!

Our 2 bedroom closets are 3/4 empty. The kitchen pantry gained a bit of breathing room...... Just because there is empty space doesn't mean we should fill it!

So to all your readers who think "I've got nothing left to get rid of", that's what I thought🤣🤣🤣

Enjoy the trip down memory lane as you create the book that will be meaningful to you.
