When you least expect it...........

We had our UFO Club in the morning, and I was one of the few who didn't meet the deadline. That's OK - I'll get it done for next month. I completed part of it, but not enough to say I put in a reasonable effort. I wish I had more time to focus on my UFOs - I'm to the point now where I need this project (Cabin in the Woods X two) off my plate as I'm getting bored with it. OK -- so I am working on applique, which stalls me EVERY time. I like applique, and I'm now using digital cutters to help cut the applique, but it still bogs me down.

I could piece all day and never have issues, but the applique? Well, that's a different story. I have a Brother Scan n Cut, and to help out with my digital cutter club, I recently purchased a barely used Cricut with all the tools.

I decided it was time to open that box and add another cutter to the mess in Studio B. I reached under the table to get the cutting mats, and OMG!!!!!!!!  There are my missing feet and the missing sample!! The new cutter was temporarily stored under one of the tables where I had placed the samples. I guess I was running out of room, so I put those items under the table. What a dumb thing to do!!! It was hilarious as I leaned down to grab those cutting mats, spotted the black fabric (sample), and immediately knew what had happened. Sure enough, as I pulled out the mats, everything I was missing was there!

My MISSING FEET and the sample

It made me laugh because when you say, "I've looked everywhere," in fact, you have not, and I did NOT look under the table, even though it was the table with all the samples. So the sample went into the drawer with the new samples, and the feet are sitting ON the table. I don't think I need all of them for this week, but I'll evaluate and put away what I no longer need.

Some of the missing feet

That solves a mystery, and I'm glad I found them. One less thing to think about!

So the Cricut came out of the box, and boy, there were a lot of tools in the boxes. Those items went into the drawer with the other digital cutter tools. One drawer per machine and one more drawer to be filled with the new Momento, the 24" digital cutter. I know, why have one cutter when you can have three?

Tools for the Cricut

So there it sits, and now I must rearrange some stuff to find space to use it. Well, I've got a plan, and that's all that counts.

The Cricut

I refuse to let a new tool sit in the box for months, so it's now out! I still have to open the heat press that came with it (I know—how many heat presses does one person need?).

I managed to tidy up the stabilizer area as it was getting out of control, and I received some new stabilizers the other day. This is the OVERFLOW from the six containers of stabilizers. That's obscene and I had better be embroidering my heart out to get all this used up!

The overflow basket of stabilizers

I managed some personal sewing in the afternoon. If you call finishing a class sample personal sewing. I don't care which machine I sew on anymore - I just need a machine, and there I was sewing in the middle of the room on a table, surrounded by stuff for my demos this week. It'll be nice to get this last week of demos done, and then I can put things back into some order with my new plan, which I won't have time to implement this week; it will be fabulous, and EVERYTHING will have a home.

It was a strange day for the weather. One minute, the sun was shining; the next, we had sleet. When I got back from my walk, I sat outside in the sun for a few minutes. The little guy was on my lap and Lexi was checking out the situation. As soon as the sun went behind the clouds, it was COLD, so we didn't stay out long.

Trying to soak up some rays

And what's with Murphy? This is a new spot for her to hang out. It's behind the little bushes right by the back door. One never knows with this girl!!

Murphy? Are you hiding?

And there's Mr. Cuteness himself. Oh gosh --he desperately needs a bath. His face is a mess, and his legs are dirty. He barely looks like a white dog! If his Mom could see him now!!! But he's at Grandma's house, and Mom's rules don't count! What will happen if M ever has kids? Will we be allowed to babysit them?

Mr. Cuteness - Bear!!!

I managed to get all the follow-up done from the weekend sessions and worked on the third writing assignment, so I'm in good shape. After Monday sewing this morning, I'll get back to work and check all the samples and supplies for the week. And I will NOT put anything UNDER the table. I had to chuckle because I was so close to those missing items, yet I couldn't see them!

Someone asked me if I was taking my Vitamin D, and I had not been. Did you know that lack of Vitamin D can cause muscle aches and mood swings? I don't understand why I would have a deficiency since I'm outside for hours every day and have been for years. I would least expect myself to have a Vitamin D deficiency. Let's just say that I'm back taking it and hopefully on a regular basis.

There are only 8 Zooms this week, a massage (which I might change), an all-day in-person event, Monday sewing, and a play day with the digital cutters. I think I can manage that!!

On that note, I'm off to spin class.

Have a super day!!!

EXCITEMENT abounds!!!

Tammy hit the jackpot!!! She got both quilts right!!!

Here are the two quilts that I'm contemplating teaching in the fall. Now, I'll only teach one or the other, but not both - at least not simultaneously. I'm crazy, but not that crazy.

I have a few votes for one and some for the other - if you have comments, you can email me or comment on the blog. elainetheriault@gmail.com

Look who I spotted on the morning walk. Yep, after all that rain the night before, there were worms and a snail on the sidewalk! It seems a bit too early for them to be out.

A snail on the morning walk

Yesterday was the first time that we both needed the car at the same time. That's pretty good in 3 1/2 months. I won the draw since I was going the furthest and had to carry the most. Thank goodness for quilting supplies! But DH took Uber and got a ride home - no big deal!

When I got home, my new toy had arrived, and it is heavy! It weighs 18 kg in the box. I slid it gently down the stairs and then laughed as I saw someone had used the box as a step. Or did they just put their foot on the box?

This is not a step!

It's an automatic heat press with a temperature control. Singer's brand-new product has been released with the Momento (the 24" digital cutter), which will be here soon.

Singer Heat Press beside my Brother Scan and Cut!

I have to say that I really like the new websites for PFAFF, Husqvarna Viking, and especially Singer. All the prices are listed, it's easy to maneuver around, and I'm happy to have all that information at my fingertips. There is still some tweaking to do, but I like them!

I haven't had a chance to play with the heat press yet. I may have some heat transfer vinyl in the house, but now that I have a project in mind, I might just take an exploratory trip to find specific colors.

So, Studio B's seams are nearing bursting, and it's time to start thinking about how to rearrange stuff. I have a plan, but I must find a home for all this stuff. There are two tables there—how hard could it be to find a spot for all that?

This stuff needs a home!

I have some ideas, though, and it would be nice to get rid of the eyesore! I see a little bit of organizing coming up!

And here's what I mean about those tubs of stabilizers. This is the one for the water-soluble—OK—so I have a bit of stabilizer. It's time to get that even more organized so I know what I have without opening the tub. Labels are in order, and I've got a plan for that as well.

The tub of water-soluble stabilizer

While I'm doing this, I'm also researching. How are different brands different? What does their product do that the ones I have do not? It's easy to go down a rabbit hole when you get in research mode, but I'm learning tons!

Speaking of cleaning up, this is what faced me when I went downstairs this morning. You probably see a box and a table with stuff on it.
GASP -- something did not get put away!!

I see the pair of scissors that did NOT get put back in their proper place!!! So the scissors are gone, and I'll try to clean up some of that stuff later today.

I have two Zooms this morning, and I was so excited that I prepared them last night and sent out the Zoom links. But in the middle of the night (and yes, I know the time changed last night, but I IGNORE that whole business - it doesn't affect me), I woke up and was so excited and wanted to add a bit more stuff to the presentation that I got up and did that!!

And the time change was NOT in my favor to wake up early! But I can have a nap if I need to.

Since I was up so early, I assembled all the information I needed and pulled information from manuals to answer questions, and I'm so organized that I am amazed!

I also had some time to sew. I got the second last block set for the Heartfelt Sampler done!!!

The second last block set -  done!

The final set of blocks has eight blocks. I had to cut some missing fabric squares—that's now done, and four of the eight are together. I ran out of time this morning, but I will focus on that this afternoon. I should be prepping for the week but can do that tomorrow.

And look at this quote in my Happiness Journal!!!!

LOVE this comment

I'm not so sure about washing dishes. We don't have much to wash, but going for a walk? It's my mental health saver!! I walk to stay active and keep my brain from exploding! And the other day, on my way to the mall, I ran into a friend!!! She reads the blog daily, so HELLO!!! I also met a neighbor from the next street while I was entering the mall. I rarely run into anyone I know!!

My friend lives in the neighborhood and walks to most places! See—it's not just me!!! But what are the benefits of walking? We don't realize how much it can mellow us out, calm us down, and allow our brains to wander without stimulation. No earpods, no phone—just walk with your brain as entertainment. You would be surprised what it will tell you if you listen!!!

I wish I could bottle my energy and enthusiasm and share it with everyone. I'm not sure where it comes from (good genetics?), but there is so much to learn and do, and I am not going to have time in my lifetime to learn it all and keep up with it, but I'm going to try darn hard to make it happen! I'm pretty easygoing, I don't stress about much, for the most part, I'm unflappable, and I am proud of what I do. I also don't second guess myself (much), and that's enough self-praise!!

But think about how you present yourself to the world. Is your glass half-full or half-empty? If you're not sure, have a conversation and record it. Then listen back. Yikes—was that good or bad?

I have a few emails that should be sent today, a couple of maintenance errands that need to be booked for the house, and a bit more follow-up to prep. I should get that out of the way today so it's not hanging over my head.

And on that note, I'm out of here! The girls and the boy will be a bit confused this morning, but I'm sure they'll have the time change figured out in a day or two!!

Have a super day!!!!

Ciao!!!!

Running on empty!

That title does NOT refer to me -- I'm doing a good job of drinking my water (although not nearly enough), eating (too much), and last night, I had a good stretch session before bed (probably not long enough), and you know what? I slept like a log! Which is good because the night before was a disaster.

In case you were wondering, I picked up the new car about three weeks ago. I hate to say that so much is happening that it was almost a non-event. I don't have time to tell you the entire story this morning, but it's still ongoing. New car fine - old car not! And I'll leave it like that.

I have some open spots at a quilt retreat from January 29 to February 4. It's at Retreat at the Farm, and if you are interested, let me know. While I am booked there for one week, if you prefer to come for a few days only, I can arrange that. E-mail me at elainetheriault@gmail.com. We have so much fun at these retreats, and we've had a few of our regular retreat people move, and suddenly, I have a couple of spots open up.

Yes - the weather can be iffy in January - as a matter of fact, we had to delay by one day last year or two years ago. We were compensated for that. It makes life more interesting, but we've never had to cancel or travel in bad weather because of a retreat. And it's on a decent road, so no worries there.

And I'm back to teaching in-person classes at The Hobby Horse Quilt Shoppe. Check out these classes and sign up directly with them on the web page. There are two machine quilting classes (One in January and one in March) and one on perfecting the 1/4" seam by learning proper cutting/pressing/sewing techniques (February). Note -- there will NOT be a sew-along with the Hobby Horse for the first part of 2024. That's a first in over 20 years, but it's time to change things up a bit!

It'll be fun to run an in-person machine quilting class --- get the information and feedback immediately. I can't wait, and there are snow days for all three classes if Mother Nature doesn't cooperate with us.

OK -- so now the big news about running on empty. NO -- The desktop is not empty. I do an excellent job at avoiding tasks, and because I'm supposed to be clearing that desktop, I'll do anything to avoid doing it!

I returned to the three desk drawers to see what I could do. When I get in "that mood," it's hard to get out. So why can't I get in the mood for that desktop?

I thought a LOT about the statement - Things that are valuable to me while I'm alive are NOT valuable to anyone when I'm gone. I know - we could discuss the semantics of that statement for days, but I've been thinking about it a lot!

So when I went through the second and third desk drawers, I was ruthless. And now, this is what the second desk drawer looks like. It is pretty slick and clean, and I can easily find anything I want.

The second desk drawer

The third desk drawer looks like this.

The third desk drawer

Holy- how can one go from THREE CRAMMED drawers to two neat ones and an empty third one? By being ruthless and throwing out the garbage that is NOT of value to anyone and donating the stuff that can be used by someone NOW. I have two boxes of office supplies to be dropped off at the local school.

Do you know how exciting this is? I am over the moon, knowing that I have a few supplies when I need them and that the school can make better use of pads of notepaper, scissors, staples, paperclips, etc., than I was.

The empty drawer was bugging me. I was dropping off a box of electronic waste at the recycling depot in the afternoon. So I looked at the shelves under my computer desk. Hmmm. I pulled out a basket of stuff. A backup hard drive that I don't use because I couldn't get it to work properly.

More electronic crap!

A BRAND NEW 1 TB hard drive. Never opened. I kept that because I have plans for it.

A 1TB hard disk

I found one lonely bulldog clip, which is now in my almost empty container of them.

A lonely bulldog clip

More useless cords that have never been used - those are gone.

Cords -- gone!

All of this was covered in a thick layer of dust. ICK!!!

I also found some GoPro (camera) stuff and many USB sticks, so I put all that into the empty drawer. It's better to be in the drawer and safe from dust than sitting under the desk collecting dust and creating visual clutter.

The drawer is now filled with USB and Go-Pro camera stuff

Then I had a further look under the computer desk. Oh boy -- what's all this stuff? I pulled out the few loose books that were sitting there.

Loose items under the computer desk

I don't think I need this anymore (again, I never used it).

Window 8.1

And I had to laugh when I saw this paper. It's hard to read, but it gives you a section of the house per week to tidy up. The first week in January is kitchen counters and sink. Week two is kitchen cabinets and drawers; week three is the pantry, food storage, and so on.

A tidy-up list

While this list is great - it only works if you don't have a lot of stuff. If you haven't been through your kitchen cupboards in years, it will take MORE than a week to sort it out. I could follow that list now, as we have eliminated tons of stuff from our house. I don't think I can keep to a list - I have enough motivation to keep going, and I work on what I want to, and right now - that is the office.

I emptied three containers. Look at how dirty those containers are -- that is DUST. I'll wash them, and they can be repurposed somewhere else.

Three filthy empty containers

I took the book container and repurposed it to contain a book of messy business cards (I know!) on this shelf. But this looks much neater than it did, and I'll get around to sorting and tidying this part later. Right now - it looks OK.

A partially empty shelf

While I was looking, I spotted two boxes, so I opened one to see what was inside.

A box of "hidden" paperwork

OH GOSH --- this is what I used to do with paper in the office. When the pile became too big, I purchased a box and put it in instead of dealing with it. I know --- I'm yelling at myself for doing that! What an idiot! But that's OK because I'll deal with it now.

I took a quick look and found Blister Pads -- OK -- so I must have had blisters at one point, but the box is not open. Sigh.

Blister Pads!

So the space under the computer desk looks better, although I need to take the dust cloth to the shelf. There are two boxes, a small pillow I found for my neck (never used - I should dig that out), two books, and a container of wipes for cleaning the screen, which are probably dry. It looks better, but there is still work to be done. The orange thing is my power cord, so it's easier to clean under the desk.

The shelf under the computer desk

The current "box" of paperwork to deal with is here. I haven't bought a new box to hide things in in a very long time, so that's progress. If you look closely -- you can see some lottery tickets!

The current box of paperwork to deal with

And here's the stack of paperwork that I need to deal with today. And if not today, then it's on the priority list and should stay there until it's done! I am so good at pushing this stuff off. I realize it could be worse than it is. I don't know how many boxes of "hidden" paper crap there are in the office, but it's not huge - maybe about ten? That's so scary, but I'll go through them one by one so my kid doesn't have to do it.

The current day's paperwork

And all the while, I keep that mantra in my head - it's only valuable while you are alive. When you are no longer alive, this stuff is USELESS. So if it's not valuable to me today, then it's just junk and must go. This applies to ANYTHING - clothing, furniture, books, dishes, etc. If it's valuable, then you should be using it -- if not, your kids certainly will NOT treasure any of it. That statement has had a profound effect on me, and I'm certainly looking at things differently, and it makes it super easy to get rid of things. I must put that on a poster and hang it in my Mom's house!

So I'm prepared to get rid of things that I know I will never use, but if it's stuff I will use, I need to find better homes for it. And let's return to our day's theme -- running on empty.

I bought two more big storage boxes the other day to finally contain all my stabilizers. I know -- this is excessive, but I get stuff from time to time from work, and I just received a huge bundle of stabilizers.

And I'm happy to report that they are all contained (except two rolls) in storage tubs. They are stored mainly by type, but I may need to do a bit more sorting.

Tubs of stabilizers

And you know what happens when one thing leads to another, and I moved the cabinets and dusted and swept behind them. I even wiped the baseboards down. This area can get dirty as the dog hair from upstairs floats down the opening. So, I must remember to vacuum more often or swoop up the dog hair. And you thought I didn't know how to handle a dust cloth!

House cleaning

That area looks neat and tidy, and I'm pretty happy with the result.

Neat and tidy!

I moved all my bobbin stuff to one drawer, so it's all easy to find. Again -- there's a home for this, and it makes it easy to see what you have.

Anything related to bobbins

I know - you're waiting for the empty part? Look at this!!! That one small unit is completely EMPTY, and two of the six drawers on the other unit are empty!!! This is what happens when you get your act together and start finding homes for stuff or getting rid of stuff. I'm not sure what I'll put in the drawers, and maybe that one unit will get repurposed somewhere else - but for now, it remains empty.

Empty drawers

And speaking of dog hair, those two girls look slightly guilty. But they are always a joy as they entertain me, especially in the evening when I sit down to read!!!

MOM -- nothing happening here!

I took a few things to the recycling center - a wooden palette, metal chairs, and that box of electronic waste. It's all about getting rid of stuff, and that was from the garage. I told you -- anything but working on the desktop! Perhaps I could find an empty box (lots here in the office), shove all the desktop stuff into a box, and put it under the computer desk! Then, it would look like I accomplished something!

I really don't care what gets sorted and cleaned as long as something is being done. And I'll do what I can while I have some downtime. I loaded a quilt this morning, so I hope to get that done today, but I also have a TON of errands that have to be done today. And there are SIX Zoom sessions this weekend that have to be prepped. I did the biggest one yesterday, but they all take time!

On that note, I'm out of here!

Have a super day!!!

Ciao!!!!

Tidy up time!

Thanks to a couple of US-based friends who offered to receive that Cherrywood Challenge book and forward it on. I also got a lead on another option which will have the package forwarded close to me for a wee extra fee. So I'm going to investigate that one first. Thanks, Laura!!!

Hmm -- we may have to turn the furnace on soon. It's getting a little bit chilly in the mornings. But then, when you get moving, you don't notice the cold. I really notice the cold with my hands the most.

I'm happy to report that I got one of my writing assignments done yesterday. That was a follow-up to a class, and well - I'm of the mindset that if I'm going to write something, it needs to be done well. So I had a bit of extra research I wanted to do. AND OMG -- I found something that I hadn't remembered I had until I saw it on the internet during my research! I think the class will be pleased that they had to wait.

AH -- that would be the Pellon Retail Guide. I remember getting it when I went to Quilt Market one year, along with BOLTS of their product that they didn't want to ship back, so they were giving them away free. Yes, I've used some of the products, but most of the bolts were more obscure products, but I hope to get into other types of sewing soon, and they may come in handy.

The Pellon Retail Guide

But inside the guide is a description and a swatch of all their products. If you want to see it, I'm sure your local quilt store has a copy. Perhaps they would let you look at it. It might be helpful if you have products that you're trying to identify!

Inside the Retail Guide

And where was it? Well, I have this little cubby on my desk, and when I used to use swatch books a lot more than I currently do, I placed all that kind of stuff in that cubby. My brain got triggered by the photo on the website and VOILA.

Storage for swatch books

I have a drawer with all my stabilizer and interfacing samples, along with all the pertinent reference material. This will now be added to that drawer. See -- it's all about putting ALL things related to the same topic in one place. The materials were organized; they were just not together.

I have been through the swatch books and may go through them again to see what can be tossed. I used to COVET those lookbooks from fabric companies, but it can all be seen online now. It seems a waste to get a hard copy of them. So I may find a bit more room in that area of my desk!

OMG -- I just pulled all that stuff out of that cubby and found a SECOND one of those guides!!! How did that happen?? Well, I don't want to give it away, but I could lend the second one if anyone would like to look at it. It's a bit challenging to lend things these days! Hmm -- I'm sure I'll find a worthy home for the second one as I surely don't need two of them.

Speaking of organizing, I decided to bite the bullet, and this is what happened.

The table is wiped clean - almost

There were a couple of empty spots on the bookcases, so I filled them with stuff. And I found homes for the rest of the stuff. Everything except ONE tray filled with paper.

Then I took everything that was on the floor and moved it to the table. This is all the CURRENT stuff that I'm trying to deal with. At least, I now have some room to lay it out, select what I need for that day, and the rest is out of the way.

The current paperwork situation

And none of it will get muddy pawprints over it as Miss Murphy feels she must stamp everything with her signature! I guess she's trying to help with the paperwork! "Hey Mom, this is approved! Now come play with me!"  Yep -- I'm sure that goes through her head all day long!

So hopefully, that move will help keep my current stuff a bit more organized and encourage me to get it done and filed or pitched or whatever needs to be done with it!

I'm in the same boat with the cutting table. I NEED an active workspace, whether that's in the office or the sewing room. The important thing is to use it as an ACTIVE workspace, NOT as a storage place or a place where items with no home take up residence. That's when it becomes BAD. I don't think I've ever thought of that for the office. DUH!!! I've wanted that but never thought of it in the sense of active workspace. My computer desk does NOT allow for that functional space. It's not large enough.

So this is the cutting table this morning. Looking pretty good, I have to say. The project on the left is one that I cut borders for this morning, and I'm not done with that fabric, so it's still sitting there. But everything else for this project is now filed in the stash room, scraps, and yardage - all gone!

The cutting table

I have to say that it feels incredible to have that wide-open space. I wish I had been more prolific with picture taking before when I had a 12" corner of the cutting table to work on! Yep -- I used to be like that!

This is the other half of the cutting table. I could move these to the current projects table (the "table in waiting"!), but I really want to get these things finished. Most could be cleared up in a short timeframe. So nothing that needs to be filed - just finished and then filed! I'm keeping it here for the moment because I'm determined to get this cleared up! And cleared up BEFORE anything else goes on there.

The other half of the cutting table

Then there's the stack of stuff sitting by the sewing machine that is waiting to be sewn. There's a Virtual Retreat tonight and all day tomorrow. My plan is to make significant progress in both areas. But I do know that everything takes way longer than we anticipate it will. So we'll see how it goes. Actually, that box on the cutting table contains the fabric for the next magazine quilt, and since that deadline is approaching fast, that's probably what I'll work on this retreat! One must be realistic!

Projects ready to sew

I got one more quilt quilted yesterday. I love the colors of this one - bright orange and grey! No issues!

Customer quilt - DONE

You have to love the Wi-Fi-enabled sewing machines. This morning, I found loads of Halloween projects in there. Most with a decorative stitch or an embroidery file that I can download to work with. That's pretty cool!

New Halloween projects in the mySewnet blog

New decorative applique stitches to download!

We also can give our machines a nickname that you can program right into the machine. I've never given any of my possessions a name. Not my car, not my sewing machine. Weird, but it works better for me. Can you imagine explaining to my customers why I'm sending a file to "Bessy" instead of my Husqvarna Viking Designer EPIC 2??

OK -- so we had a great class last night with the Urbanalogie group. OK -- so we were only three people, but we chatted for an hour, and we chatted about new classes. That's a very dangerous topic, but Maria offered up the most fantastic class idea ever!!!! It was a super interesting conversation. Hey -- that's an idea -- why not invite a few people to a brainstorming session on different classes? That would be awesome. Well, maybe we can do that during the Virtual Retreat.

I've got a couple things to confirm, but I hope to put out a list of my classes for 2022 by the end of next week. Don't worry - there'll be loads of room for everyone. But I think you'll be pleased with the offering! So if you have an idea for a class, this weekend is the time to get it to me! E-mail me or pop by the Virtual Retreat to let me know your thoughts.

OH -- I can't wait! Seriously?? I'm still working on finishing up stuff for this year! However, I will say that I'm in EXCELLENT shape for finishing the FIVE quilts that we did this year. Most of them just need the final border(s) put on, and then I'm done!! So that's pretty impressive. No UFO status for those projects.

Don't forget that it's Virtual Retreat weekend. That would be tonight and all day tomorrow. Here are the links and the hours. I hope to see you! Stop by to say hi for a bit, set up your sewing machine, or get some handwork and sit and sew. We talk about everything and anything. It's a lot of fun and sure beats sewing by yourself! Plus, we solve world issues, but more importantly, we solve sewing issues that we may encounter!
