Hold my paw?

Hello Jenny from Australia!!! She figured out the time zones and popped into our Virtual Retreat last night! How fun is that? It was Sunday morning for her, while it was Saturday night for us. Gosh -- I absolutely LOVE the Virtual Retreat. We get to stay in touch with our friends, and meet new people! And if you're traveling, as was Karen, no problem -- just pop into the call from wherever you are!

Yep -- those Virtual Retreats are here to stay! And so will the Monday sewing -- I can't help it -- if some of them want to go back to the physical in-person meetings -- I'm good with that, but I just don't have the time to pack up and go, set up, then sew for a bit, then pack up and come back home. Not going to happen for me for a long time.

Well, let's take a look at the remainder of those UFO projects.

Colleen has almost completed all the hand applique on this quilt called Fleur! That is a LOT of hand applique, but the end result is gorgeous!

Dede is very close to completing her 100 Tula Pink blocks for the Samler. This extra pop of color that she has added looks fantastic around the blocks.

Diane is working on Night Sky by Jaybird Quilts. The frames are on the blocks, and now it's time to assemble.

Diane's Night Sky

Elaine has the backing and the binding completed for her William Morris snowball quilt.

Jane is completing some blocks for the Border Creek Station sew along from a couple of years ago. In her wisdom, she thought that making 5" blocks instead of the original 10" would be a good idea! Never again! (so she says!)

Jane's sew-along blocks

Kathleen finished off two quilts from a stack of churn dash blocks. Now you know how we say that a quilt is dog-approved or cat-approved? I think Hobo Kitty was pointing out that he wanted ONE of these quilts. That looks like a very possessive pose if you ask me!

Kathi is in the final assembly steps of her Graphic Jam quilt by Sassafras Lane Designs. I LOVE this quilt - but I don't have time. No -- I don't have time!

Look at those shameless ladies in their skimpy beachwear!

Linda used it to make a pillowcase.

She made a couple of extra pillowcases for donation.

She took a stack of blocks and assembled the top, as well as quilted it!

PLUS, she got quite a few blocks completed for her Town and Country (365-day quilt) from The Gourmet Quilter!

Sheila finished the blocks for this quilt, and it's now quilted and bound.

The back is perfect for her quilt

WOW  -- that's amazing. I just love seeing how much the group pushes themselves and each other to get stuff accomplished, although I did hear some grumbling last night that someone (not me) took on a bit more than they thought they could get done this month. It's good to push ourselves! I know she'll get it done -- she's just grumbling!

I have a couple of things to share that I worked on last night at the Virtual Retreat.

The first were these two table runners that needed borders. Hmmm -- is this on my list of 22 things for 2022? I better check -- if they are NOT on that list, they should be!

My two table runners with the borders added

They now both have the borders on them, the binding is made, and I have a large piece of fabric for the backing. I'll have to quilt the first one, then piece the leftovers to make the backing for the second one. Yeah!!! These are leftover bits from a quilt I made a couple of years ago. The runners were on the current project table, and now they are in the "to be quilted" pile.

Backing, binding, and the two table runners

I also finished one of the blocks from yesterday's homework. We had to make two identical blocks -- I managed to get one done for the class, and now the second one is done -- you'll see that later this week.

And I decided to start clearing the ironing board of all those half-square triangles. So I pressed, then trimmed, then pressed and trimmed. I still have a large stack, but I hope to get through that today, as well as process some of the half-square triangles for the hourglass units. I put some of the units away before I decided to take a picture.

Trimming half-square triangles

Then I need to layout my UFO project for this month, or I will be grumbling that I took on too much.

And what's with these girls? They seem to have a love/hate relationship. They never sleep together, and they love to play fight and are totally jealous of each other if one gets a treat or more attention than the other.

This is the closest I've ever seen them sleep together, and probably because Mom was sitting in the chair right there. This was after a play-fight session.

Close, but not too close

And what's this? I'll hold your paw? Notice that sly Lexi has her paw on top -- she always looks so innocent, but who is really in control here? And Lexi was closest to me -- did you notice that?

Holding paws

Murphy is just a goof. I looked out at one point, and there she was - curled up in a sad dog ball against the house. She is on one of the rabbit's paths to move from the gazebo to the deck. Maybe she thought if she was quiet and hiding behind the bushes, she could trick the rabbit into complacency? Oh, Murphy!!

Murphy hiding

That dog is all or nothing. Fast or STOP! That's our Murphy!

Well, it's time to get moving! We have our first show and tell from Out of the Box this morning, and the homework is AMAZING. So much creativity!!! I can't wait to hear all the stories.

Don't forget that after that class -- we'll start the Virtual retreat TODAY at 11:30 Eastern.

Here's the link.

The final clean up begins

While it's nice to have lots of stuff - it can sure suck up a lot of time as one attempts to manage it all.

When I got back from the retreat, I had several bags of stuff that had to be unpacked and then put away. I've managed to get all but one unpacked. There's a pile of stuff in the hallway upstairs that needs attention. In some case, I have to find a backing for a project, or I need a matching fabric for a border. Or it's something that needs to be put away. I'm going to try and get that cleaned up and sorted before I unpack the final bag.

I got fed up this morning as I was trying to organize the projects for this week's agenda. So I basically emptied Studio U so I could have loads of room to work. I took pictures - well I will take pictures and you'll see them. Holy - that makes a huge difference. OK -- so I'm lying. I didn't completely empty it, but I made room to work.

And then there's Studio B - well, that's a whole other story. I started yesterday and yes - one box or bag at a time. It's just that there's a LOT of boxes and bags.

I've got loads to do before I'm ready for the Sit n Sew days next week. But as I was rifling through stuff this morning, I found a whole whack of stuff that is designated for the community projects quilts. Perfect. Some of it was already cut into kits and some of it needs to be cut. I want the ladies who are coming to maximize their time by sewing and most people like to sew rather than cut. There are a few spots left if anyone is interested in sewing for community projects. That's next Friday - July 19th. You can e-mail me if you'd like to come.

Here's one of the projects that I completed (the top) at the retreat. A while back, our ongoing project at The Hobby Horse was to make table runners from this book. I choose certain ones each month and discussed how to assemble the table runner. The focus of the class was on how to quilt these projects.

The Big Book of Table Toppers

Believe it or not, but I made most of the ones that I selected for the class. The strips were cut for this one. On the morning before we left, I sewed it together. The sides need to be trimmed, but I'll do that once it's quilted.

Table runner - top is DONE

When I got home, I found some backing for it and made the binding so it's ready to go into the "to be quilted" pile when I unearth that pile.

Binding, backing and table runner top - ready for quilting

I'm a pioneer at heart. I can't give up saving scraps. I know - it's a sickness. Got it from my mother! I had a bag of bits that were left over from the strips when I cut out a bunch of squares for a quilt. The quilt top is done, but not quilted. However, these bits were saved in a bag in the hopes of making a zippered pouch from them. I laid them out to see what I had and decided that I had enough for more than one pouch if I added the blue solid fabric that went with the project.

One pair of sides for a zippered pouch

Here's the second set of sides for another zippered pouch. I had to piece the bottom sections of the blue. Now I want that to be a solid piece. So when I unearth the bucket with the solids, I'm sure I'll find the same blue.

The second pair of sides for a zippered pouch

And I think there are enough scraps left over to make one more. Those were done one morning at the retreat.

Speaking of the retreat, there were several things that I forgot to bring with me. One of them was the plastic container with all my presser feet. I thought I remembered taking it out of the cabinet that it resides in. Nope - when I got home, I found the plastic container in the very spot it's supposed to be. I had simply forgotten to pack it.

The container of presser feet

That is a very precious (and expensive) box. I must never lose that!!!!

The other thing that I was supposed to take was a light that we install in the dining room to have extra light. Well, I remembered the light, but where was the small chain that attached our light to the existing light? I remember seeing it on the sideboard (in the dining room) before we left and as I grabbed the light, I'm certain that I grabbed the chain. But where is the chain???  No idea. It wasn't in the box. And it's no longer on the sideboard. Hmmm - where did the darn thing go????

Thought I'd take one more peek in the project bag and NO chain. Well - I have a couple of months to find the darn thing. But why wasn't it in the box?

I must also get myself a travel supply box. Or - I need to prep better. Lynn is an excellent prepper for the retreat. Absolutely everything she took was prepped. And I don't think she was missing any tools or supplies. Me on the other hand - well, I was missing stuff. So I need to get better organized or just take projects that need to be pieced. I can handle packing a spool of thread!

Let's pop down to Studio B to see what's going on. This is the bookcase area. Notice that there is stuff in front of it and instead of just moving it, I decided to deal with it.

Let's start to clean up

Yes - I know that I have things to get rid of and I am. Just some stuff, I'm not ready to get rid of yet. And I might change my mind as I see how much stuff will or will not fit in the storage room.

This cabinet is filled with cross stitch and embroidery stuff. There are kits, fabric, stretcher frames and a whole lot more. I did NOT go through the cabinet.

A cabinet full of cross stitch and embroidery projects

I know that I'll likely not touch it, but I might. So it stays for the moment.

Cross stitch and embroidery patterns/projects

There were three such cabinets. I managed to empty one as I took some stuff out. I'll share that with you tomorrow. I have some yarn as well. Not a huge amount and a lot of it is in small amounts that I was going to use for embellishments. But there are a couple of knitting projects for cute vests or cover-ups. I do like that kind of thing so I'd better get knitting or find someone who will knit them for me without breaking the bank!

So the three rolling cabinets went back into the large storage area. One is filled with yarn, one is filled with cross stitch stuff and the third one is partially filled with other stuff. I just ran down to remind myself what was in that drawer unit and well - I should get rid of a couple of things that are in that unit. OK - a job for today.

Does anyone work on Project Linus blankets for kids? I found these six skeins of yarn and it's up for grabs. But I would prefer that it be used for Project Linus. So if you knit or crochet for that organization and you live close to me - this could be yours.

Yarn to be donated to Project Linus
I also found these three skeins which would also work for Project Linus. It's all together in one bag once I find someone who works for this charity.

More yarn to be donated

Today's task is to move a cabinet that's sitting beside the long arm and it needs to be in that storage room. Hmm - not a ton of room to maneuver down there, but I need the shelf to put stuff on once I sort through it.

Oh my - I'm unearthing stuff. Stuff that got shoved into boxes and bags just because I didn't know what to do with it or it didn't have a home. Now that most things have homes, it should be easy to get stuff back where it belongs but it's going to take time. I have a feeling that there is going to be a lot of stuff piled in the corner when the group comes next week. But I'm OK with that. Once I start on the books and magazines, that'll free up a lot of room. My priority is to find the thread for the long arm.

Got a HUGE day planned today and it's not in Studio B. I've got blog posts to prep so I've got everything organized and ready to sew, write, and edit all day. Let's see how far I get.

Have a super day!!!!

Ciao!!!

Show n tell

So I got word that the car is a total loss. But the whole process is far from over. I went to see the physio people yesterday and I'm going to get some physio/massage done. And I need to replace the car.

Insurance is a rip-off. We all know that but are required to have insurance. You get $2,200 for medical expenses automatically approved in this kind of a situation. However, they take from your own extended health benefits FIRST and then if they need to, they dip into their coffers. SERIOUSLY?????  That hurts more than the whiplash. I couldn't believe it. Yes - they deplete your health benefits so if you need or just want a massage, later on, you no longer have any benefits left.

What a total farce. In this case, since there was no 3rd party liability involved, my insurance hasn't done me any favors. I'm likely going to get the equivalent of paying three years worth of insurance in this event. And I envision the insurance company taking my car and selling the parts and recouping the money that they are giving me. Seriously?????  Why do we bother to have insurance? Or right - third-party liability.

It was an eye opener when I went to the auto body lot to get the stuff from my car. First off, there's something to be said for having a red car. That lot was CRAMMED and it was a HUGE lot. There's a track wide enough for one car to drive on that winds through the smashed up cars. At almost the end of the circuit, there's my red car, already tucked in behind others, but easy to spot amongst all the whites, greys and black cars. Some poor guy was trying to find two cars and I bet they weren't red!!

When I pulled the stuff out of the hatchback area, I could see why they wrote the car off. The frame has pushed inside the car and the flat floor in the back wasn't so flat anymore. It was heaved up on the side that had been hit. So that would have been too much to fix. The guy hit hard and fast and then fled! GRRRRR.  Not sure if they found him as I haven't had a chance to ask that question yet. Hopefully, today when they tell me how much money I'm getting. I'm bracing myself for that call.

Needless to say, with the physio (oh I had to go a ½ hour early to deal with all the paperwork and she wasn't kidding!). But seriously, there has to be a better way - I kept putting in the same information, name, birth date, and address - on many, many papers. Couldn't they have all that stuff electronically with auto-fill??? Anyway - with physio, the gym and getting my stuff from the car, including my license plates, I didn't get much done yesterday. Heck - I got nothing done as I was exhausted and needed a nap and then went to see Mary Poppins.

Today you're getting the rest of the show n tell from some of the classes last year.

I don't remember who made all the items, but here are some of the finished show n tell that we had after our Farm Girl Vintage and the table runner classes last year.

I love this first one. What a clever way to use different sized panels or even fussy cut fabric pieces.

A great way to use differently sized panels

A great combination of colors. This is a very simple pattern, yet the colors and quilting have your eyes checking out the entire quilt.

Very soft coloring and LOVE the quilting
This picture is deceiving as I believe this panel is a full-sized panel. But I love the way they did the diagonal quilting on it.

A Christmas quilt - nice diagonal quilting
We did have other table runners show up in class. This one is a snowman.
A snowman table runner in progress
This was another table runner that someone finished. I love the way they managed the corners of that border print.

Cute little table runner with nicely planned borders

Ginny made this one. It's amazing how we all seem to lack in confidence especially in the quilting department. The design that she chose is perfect and I don't think I could have done a better job. We really need to be more confident about the work we do. Someone else might not like it, but so what? The quilt, project, work is OURS and ours alone. Amazing job Ginny!!

Beautiful quilting and the design is perfect

Shoot - this one should actually have gotten into the table runner show n tell. Susan V didn't want to make a table runner so she incorporated the string pieced blocks into a quilt with some panels. I love her design and this was an AHA quilting moment for her as well. It was loads of fun to see those that practiced actually got way better and their confidence level went sky high!!!!  Great job Susan!!!

Creative way to use the string pieced blocks

Susan B made these design boards. There is a tutorial on how to make at this link. I used Susan's boards for the show n tell of our Vintage Farm Girl blocks until I made some of my own. Mine are still waiting for the binding, but I'm working on it as part of my clean up process.

Small design boards by Susan B
Oh, shoot - I guess this one should have gone in the string pieced show n tell as well. Someone likes BIG. Instead of a table runner, they made a quilt. This is one of my favorite blocks - so easy to make and you can throw anything at it.

Quilt made from string pieced blocks
This one is Ronda's. I remember that because I gave her the fabric!!!!  Do I see a trend here? It seems that she shops a LOT at my house!  But the important thing here is that she is taking scraps and bits and making quilts from them. That's called designing and is doing a great job at it. Oh yes - I think we did this in EQ8 or something like that.

Ronda's quilt for a charity event

This is such a cute quilt. I have one that is partially together. Oh - I bet if I dug it out and I know exactly where it is, that it's not far from completion. Shoot - should get that out and finish it. The pattern is by The Quilt Patch (store is closed - notice how much I've mentioned closed stores in the last two days?)

Snowman quilt

This is Shelly's table runner. This one came in near the end of our year so my memory is still good. It's super cute with the pinwheels (made using the Twister ruler) and then little gnomes on both ends. More importantly - it was finished!!!!

Gnome table runner - DONE

This was Susan B's FIRST bag ever that she made.  Now how did that happen? I thought everyone made bags!  It's beautifully finished. The dark brown is cork and she has a small tag on it. It looks super professional. Great job Susan!

Susan's purse
I believe this was Diane's quilt. It's beautiful and has been sitting around for years. It's layered, but not quilted. Unfortunately, at some point in her quilt learning, someone told her to baste the layers and then trim the excess away. It's amazing how bad information like that get passed onto students. Then they struggle with the quilting and wonder why. So if you're basting a quilt, do NOT trim the backing and batting until the quilting is DONE. I wonder how she's making out?

Diane's layered quilt

Next piece belongs to Shelly. At a guild meeting, we were each given a Fat Quarter and challenged to make something incorporating that fabric. Shelly isn't fond of pink so I gave her this FQ to work with. I LOVE what she created. After she had made this, I saw a picture posted by someone on Facebook and the sky looked exactly the same. Great job Shelly and great use of that fabric. I'm impressed. I think she's a closet lover of pink!

Shelly's challenge using the "pink" fat quarter
This is a table runner made by Vivenda. It's a pattern that I designed using eight 5-inch squares of Northcott Gradations. I love the straight line quilting. It's easy and anyone can do it!! The table runner is done!!!  Here's a link to the pattern if you want to make one.

Vivenda's table runner

And then we have this. Shelly is a hair model for a friend of hers who is a hair stylist. We never know what color hair Shelly will have when we see her. I don't think I've ever seen her with the same color two months in a row. I loved the brilliant oranges/yellows and wanted to share with you!!

Shelly's bright do!

The other side of Shelly's do

Did great with the eating and water consumption yesterday. It's really not a big deal, but leading up to the start, I was binging like crazy just to use up the bad food. How silly is that? Now I'm back on track - new goals for the year. New work out program at the gym and I'm all set. I'm always telling people that you need to use your legs or you'll lose the use of them. I try to get 10,000 at least every day. But what about the other muscles in your body? I'm learning to do some gentle stretches that can be done at home with a foam roller and a mat. Simple tools, but on my - I felt so GOOD when I was done. It was better than having a massage. Given the turn of events with the insurance company, I guess that's a good thing.

We're all so tight and stiff, that as we age, we NEED to stretch. We need to work those muscles and keep them loose. I'm determined to make that happen because it's going to cut down on pain and suffering and further damage.

On that cheery note, I'm out of here.

Have a great day!!!!!

Table Runner Show and Tell - Part Four

Holy - this is the fourth day of the table runner show and tell. There were a lot of table runners worked on in that class. If you didn't submit your photos, it's too late. This is it - last day and somehow I still have a ton of photos to share with you.

Check back to the last three days of posts if you haven't been following along.

Day one of the table runner show and tell
Day two of the table runner show and tell
Day three of the table runner show and tell

The first runner today is called Pinwheels by Terry Atkinson

Pinwheels by Terry Atkinson

Somewhat reminiscent of a log cabin with a pinwheel in the center. Keep in mind that I would assign a couple of runners each month and the class could do any or all or none of them. It was their choice and I did try to choose runners where we could chat about a different aspect or style of quilting to fill the space. I didn't have many takers on this one.

This one belongs to Sarah. It wasn't quilted at the time I took the photo, but I bet she's got it done by now. Love the soft color palette.

Sarah's version of Pinwheels

As I mentioned the other day, I had started several other runners or at least pulled fabric for a couple in addition to the ones you've already seen. When I started this series of posts, I couldn't find the bag where the projects were stored but then on Day Two, I located the bag on in that messy corner.

In some cases, there was just fabric pulled for a project but which project?

This was pulled for which table runner?
And this bundle? What runner was it pulled for???

Which project?
I might go back through the patterns to see if I can remember which ones I chose those fabrics for. There were a couple of runners that I ended up not assigning so it could be one of those. Yes - towards the end of the class, I stopped assigning runners so that the class could catch up and get quilting and stop piecing which we're all very good at!!!

I also found this pile of strips. After a wee bit of research, I realized that these strips were cut to make the Pinwheels table runner. It's a pretty easy table runner so it's going in the piecing pile to finish before the end of the year.

My strips cut for the Pinwheels table runner

The next runner which was one of the first ones we did was very popular. And it's super easy. Actually, a lot of the runners in this book are easy. It's a great book. See Day One for details on the book.

Rungs by Karla Alexander

Again, this runner was LONG. I wonder how or why that happened??? This one is Ronda's. It's quilted in the photo - she used her Westalee rulers to do straight lines. I'm good with that - she found a way to get it quilted and that's all that counts. I gave her the fabrics for this one. We were at a retreat in February and I made her a kit! Nice color combo - my new favorite - green and purple.

Ronda's version of Rungs

This is Sarah's version of the table runner. YES - Sarah did a lot and I'm certain that she ended up quilting all of her runners. That was the point of the class and the only way to really learn what quilting is all about. I really like her straight line quilting on this one.

Sarah's version of rungs

Here's another version made up in purple and gold. Very striking.

A purple and gold version of Rungs

This one is my version. Hot pink, orange, and purple. Looks like a sunset!  I love it and it's finished. It's been finished for a while. I'd have to check my book to see the number. Just checked - number 60 - not as far back as I thought!

My version of Rungs

The next one is called Berry Easy by Mary Jacobson and Barbara Grovers. A very cute and simple table runner with lots of squares.
Berry Easy by Mary Jacobson and Barbara Grovers

This is Lynn's version. While I like the front of it, it's the back that I'm in love with. She used her embroidery machine to quilt some straight lines in the main blocks. And then because she didn't have a pattern for the same design to fit in the triangles, she did that with her walking foot. I know I have a picture of it somewhere although you can't really see it (which you're not supposed to).  But she did an amazing job. Again, she found a way to get it quilted and that's what the class was all about.

Lynn's version of Berry Easy
Next one up is Sarah's. Yes - she a new quilter and she was busy, busy, busy. It's not quilted in the photo, but I bet she has it done now. Nice bright jewel tones!!

Sarah's version of Berry Easy
This is my version of the table runner. I raided my veggie fabric stash and cut up veggies in squares to make the runner. I love it. Unfortunately, it's still in the "to be quilted" pile.

My version of Berry Easy

And the last table runner that I assigned was Totally Taupe by Mary V. Green. I love this table runner.

Totally Taupe by Mary V. Green
Guess who made one? Yep - that would be Sarah. For someone who had never done applique before - she did an amazing job. And it was quilted beautifully. She's come a long way in the quilting department. No fear -ah heck - she's younger than us so she's not inhibited by fear of screwing up. Awesome job Sarah.

Sarah's version of Totally Taupe

I have a couple more pictures to share with you. Vivenda sent me some photos and all of them were of FINISHED table runners. That's super exciting!!!

This is the Flying in Formation runner. Look at the quilting!!  I LOVE IT - that's one of my favorite fillers and it's works so nice with this runner!!! Awesome job Vivenda!!!

Look at it quilting in this one!!!

This belongs to Vivenda. It's her version of Confetti. It's quilted and bound. Nice job on the stippling.

Vivenda's version of Confetti

I have to laugh at the next one. I must have assigned it, but I don't remember. It was on my list and I even did some work on a version. This one is called Star Spangled by Mary Etherington and Connie Tesene.

Star Spangled by Mary Etherington and Connie Tesene

This one belongs to Vivenda. Notice that it's quilted and bound!!  But have a look at the coloring. While I struggled with colors for this one and I have to confess that I don't like the original coloring, Vivenda did a smash up job of choosing the positive/negative. I LOVE THIS one.

Vivenda's version of Star Spangled

I found the bag with my bits. I wonder if I could rethink the colors and use what's already been made???  Something to ponder before the end of the year.

My bits for my version of Star Spangled
This next one was on my list to assign, but after I started it, I thought it was too much work so I didn't include it in the homework.

Nothing by Pinwheels by Ellen Pahl

I got as far as making these blocks and then the project got shelved. I think I might just be able to finish that before the end of the year.

My blocks are complete for the table topper

One last picture. Here's the striped fabric that I was going to use to make that table runner with the stripes in the blocks. I couldn't find a suitable color for the setting triangles. This brown was in the bag - was that for the setting triangles??  No idea and not sure that I'm going to make that one.

Striped fabric pulled for a runner

I think you can see by my projects that it makes sense to label stuff if you're going to shelve it!!!!

There you have it - the most amazing show n tell from out table runner class. The students did an amazing job and at the last class, they got up one by one to show their favorite runner or the one that they learned the most from. It was so heartwarming to hear their stories and how much more confident they are now than when they started. That was my intention and I just love their enthusiasm and excitement and the number of light bulb moments we all shared in the classes throughout the year.

Thanks to all of you who participated!!!!  You all did a fabulous job!

Tomorrow I need to share with you what's been going on in my life over the last four days. Leaps and bounds I have to say. I'm positively relaxed with no deadlines. How can I function like this???

Have a great day!!!!!

Ciao!!
