It's a Celebration

 I won't tell you what ridiculous o'clock I was awake this morning. Too many things running through my head, so I eventually just got up and did them! I sent a lot of e-mails and did some paperwork that needed to be done. Got an embroidery designed and ready to stitch out later this morning. I think I still owe 4 personal e-mails to people, so be patient a day or so longer - I'm almost out of the huge pile! 

Yesterday was an interesting day. I was on Zoom from 9:30 - 5:30. Now how did that happen? Well, three classes and a meeting. But that's OK - I did have 15 minutes between a couple of the sessions. We had an amazing Ruler class for the domestic machine, and it goes to show that YES, you can have some successful Zoom classes. 

I'm going to post the upcoming classes for 2021 this coming week so watch for that. 

Today, it's all about sharing the homework from one of our ongoing classes for 2020. It was the class that almost didn't happen because of COVID, but I'm so glad we pushed ahead and well - it was interesting to see how the participants made out since a number of them, myself included, were using what we had in our stash!!

We ran this class through The Hobby Horse in Georgetown, so they sourced the pattern for us. I will confess that I would probably pass it by if I saw this pattern on the shelf. I'm not that fond of either picture on the front cover, and the pictures on the back are not that great either. 

I see the designer has taken this pattern and made some changes to it, and released it with two sizes and different corners. You can see that picture on her website. It's called Morris Medley, and I have to say, I LOVE the new corners, and the coloring is much better. That's what happens as we grow as designers. We're not perfect, and the original pattern was created in 2008, and a lot of learning can happen in 12 years. 

So without further ado, let's have a look at the finished quilts. We were 18 in the class, and we ended up with 2 people who audited the class but whose life got in the way and didn't have any time to sew, one person who got off to a rocky start and is going to start over, 2 almost finished top, 9 quilt tops, and 3 completely finished quilts. That's pretty darn good considering the conditions!!!

We did make some changes to the pattern, in particular the outer corners. The values and colors are different for each quilt. It's truly amazing fun to flip through the images and see how different they all turned out. 

Many of the group went through various forms of mental health struggles, physical struggles, and time management struggles during the making of these quilts. Some struggled with the pandemic shutdowns. It was NOT easy.

Diane started off with some nice colors but felt it was a bit on the dark side. She couldn't continue with the quilt but will be working on it, hopefully next year. Life happens- we all get that! But it's a great start!

Mary has a very soft pretty version of Celebration. She changed up some of the colorings around the center green star and made changes to the corners.

This is Susan's partial top. I love where she's going with the colors and hope that we'll get to see the final version of it at some point.

A totally different look by Kathi. Those are HOT colors and look like a FIESTA, not a celebration. She also made some changes to the corners and still has to add her final border. She used the inside border for the center star, the same color as was on the outside. Interesting.............

Another soft version of the quilt and this color combination is beautiful. The corners were changed, and some of the colorings within the quilt were switched around as well.

Another FIESTA version. Valerie kept running out of blue fabric and finding new blues to use. But you wouldn't know that to look at the quilt. And her version is quilted with an overall and needs the binding attached.

This belongs to Cindy and has a masculine look. Amazing how color can totally change the look. A lot of us had to play with the fabrics in the center block, and Cindy changed hers at the last minute, and it made a huge difference to the look.

Cindy did not put the final border on the outside, and she had her version custom quilted. It's already being used! She's FAST.

Linda took an unusual turn with this amazing colorway. I LOVE the black/red/grey/white that she used, and she has one fabric that ties it all together. It's gorgeous. She's close to being finished, and I can't wait to see this final quilt. Great job, Linda - take care of yourself!!!

Judi had almost abandoned her quilt. She wasn't happy with the colors she started with. We had a chat, and the next thing I knew, her quilt top was done. This is NOT at all like what she started with, but it's AMAZING!! I love the colors. Great job, Judi, and so glad you stuck it out.

Here's another FIESTA quilt. This one is BRIGHT. And I'm sure it's even brighter in person. There's a busy floral in those larger squares where Wendy pulled the colors from. The black is spectacular and really sets the quilt off.

This is Grace's fall version of Celebration. She made some changes to the corners and changed up the coloring in the middle round. I think almost everyone did change up their fabrics and colors. But wow - this is gorgeous!!! I believe it's mostly batiks.

This is Nancy's quilt. Again, a totally different look. I love how she used two borders on the outside and also changed up the corners. She's courageous to use black in those large squares, but it seems to anchor the quilt, and it really is beautiful.

We got to see Patti's quilt each month, but Patti couldn't join us on Zoom. But we gave her feedback through a friend who was on the Zoom calls. I think the end result is beautiful. Notice the coloring of her quilt is quite close to the small picture on the pattern's front cover. I never noticed that before! But it's awesome, and Patti also had to remake the center block. I think all of us did.

Marilyn used what she had in her stash! And even ran out in some places and had to substitute. But aren't the colors pretty - She's calling it Celebrate With Ice Cream. It sure reminds me of all the flavors at the ice cream store. She used different fabrics in different spots, and the quilt looks entirely different from the others.

This next one belongs to Catherine. She wasn't happy with some of her fabric choices at one point and found a substitute fabric. Now it looks gorgeous.

Last but not least is my version. It's very subtle, but I like that! I feel like it's glowing. I also made some changes to the position of the colors. I ran out of two or three fabrics and was lucky to find some substitutes once we could get out shopping. I thought I was done and made the binding and the backing. Then I heard one of the students mention a border. A border? Oh, shoot - I completely forgot that there was a border. I'm going to rethink it today and see if I have any fabric left that I could play with. I don't think so, so this might have to be it!!!

On that note, I'm off to work! Yep - no rest for me. At least not today. Don't worry, I've got a couple of lazy days planned for later this week, and as a result, I've got to get stuff done today. Writing, quilts, and our UFO club! Only one Zoom session - thank goodness. I didn't get out for that afternoon walk yesterday, but that's OK. Today, however, I'll be out!

Same old, same old

 There's no difference in the internet situation. So I'll be calling again today. I wasn't on any Zoom calls yesterday, but I was on my computer and working away, and all of a sudden - POOF! No internet. We only know when it goes down if we're on the internet or DH is watching TV, so it probably happened more often than we actually noticed. It's just not the internet, but the TV as well and when the TV goes down, well, that's not a good thing in our house. Someone is already a little testy about the situation! And I won't elaborate on that. 

I LOVE Kat's comment about the technology woes. "Computer glitches always happen to me at this time of the year. Don't know if you have any sort of belief in horoscopes; I say horror scopes, but one day I learned that whenever Mars is in retrograde, computer glitches happen. So whenever there are problems, I check, and sure enough, retrograde. Do do do do."

I checked with M, who is extremely knowledgeable about astrology, and YES, there was a retrograde with Mercury. I have to confess that I don't know what that means, but something is not aligned right! Which may explain why the internet worked perfectly the week before. So when is this retrograde over? I need it to be over permanently!

Lynn and I had a good sewing day. We chatted about everything and everyone, solved the world's problems and well, it was a good day! However, it never fails that on the sew days, that it's like grand central station around here! People picking stuff up and dropping stuff off, or the phone going off or e-mails that NEED to be addressed. It never fails!!

This is the latest bag of stuff that got dropped off. Thanks to Rose and her husband for that. There are some quilts and placemats that Rose bound and a quilt top that she assembled. Yeah!!! Thanks, Rose!

Oh, Rose took a drive to the two barns for the Dutchman's Puzzle quilt. Shoot - I should have asked her to send me a picture of the REAL barn! So I can at least say that I saw it. 

And this is the stack of stuff that I've received from Diane since the pandemic started! Yikes!! I need to sort through all that - pull out the quilt tops and make backings and move them to the "to be quilted" pile. But that's for another day and no rush at the moment. I'm going to slow her down soon when I give her smaller pieces to sew into scrap quilts!

Thanks so much to Diane and Rose for helping me deal with the piles of stuff in that room. It seems that we've made so many tops but don't appear to have decreased the piles of fabric. OK - that's a lie; I do see a dent, but not a big one! 

Speaking of moving things to the "to be quilted" pile, I got the top for my Celebration quilt done yesterday!! I'm so happy to get this done. The binding and the backing are made as well. I found a bolt of fabric that worked perfectly for the backing, and there was JUST enough. I couldn't have planned that any better. The only thing that remains is to write up a pattern for the last block, which I changed from the original pattern, and figure out some ideas for quilting to pass along to the group. One of the five ongoing projects this year is very close to being done. This has never happened before. 

OH -- of course, you'll get to see the top, but ONLY after the class has seen the top!

Now that I look at the fabrics I chose for the quilt top, you know that one with the starbursts looks like fireworks! Perfect for a Celebration quilt. 

That meant that I could at last move those portable design boards away from the permanent one. Now I have access to Aviatrix Medallion, so I can finish that quilt top as well. It just needs the final border put on, and the binding and the backing made. Could I finish another project today??

In preparation for some quality sewing time, I've amassed this stuff on the work table. Wouldn't it be nice if ALL of this could be finished? A lot of it is very close to being finished, and I'd love to cross a few more things off the list.

Lynn got me excited about our upcoming real retreat in a couple of weeks. I haven't packed a thing, which is very unusual for me. But I got to thinking about what I'd like to take. So I dug out my NEW retreat basket. Much prettier than a laundry basket. There are now TWO projects in the basket. One is a string quilt, and one is a small quilt that just has to be assembled. That's probably 2 and a half days of work right there! I'm going to be careful how I pack - well, how much I pack!!

And all through the year, I was diligent about keeping the ongoing projects in one area. At one point, they got too large to all fit in the laundry basket, so they sat on the floor right beside it, but I knew where everything was, and that was HUGE. It pays to be organized. I know if someone looked at Studio B right now, they would faint at the amount of stuff piled everywhere. But I know where everything is, and that's all that counts. I do hope tomorrow during the retreat to putter around and clean up some of the mess. 

We usually go out for dinner on Friday night, but the restaurants near me are temporarily closed. But then I got to thinking that we are on the edge of the region where they are closed. We shop in the other region so why can't we eat in the other region. It's literally ten minutes more driving. So we went out, and I didn't feel guilty in the least. How many people are getting COVID in a restaurant? And we're trying to keep the economy going. My bubble is so small, that well - it's small. We wore our masks; we were socially distanced from everyone. I did NOT walk home from the restaurant as I normally would when we dine out close to home. 

And I seemed to spend a good part of the evening getting prepped for our first class of Long Time Gone. Yep - it's today!! I got the homework sewn to show the group. I've got some great photos to share with them, the presentations are ready to go. The link is sent. The Facebook group is set up, and all the invitations and links are sent! There are almost 50 people in the group! Yikes!! How did that happen?? I swear that even if you don't make the quilt right now, this is the BEST deal going.

Are we there yet?

 I spent the majority of the day just sewing, and it was glorious! I did sew some of the homework stuff that needed to be done. I'll share that with you another day. I need to get some more writing done today to get the homework to the group. I did catch up on some other projects that needed to be done. 

Best of all, I spent it with two friends, and we had a fabulous time just chatting and sewing. Here's the thing - we ALL live alone - right? And did I not hear that it's OK if you live alone to have a bubble. I don't have any family here, and my bubble is small, so this is OK. My mental health is worth more than anything. I'm not sewing in a large group, so I'm good with the mini Sit n Sew day! 

I'm a bit disappointed with yesterday's news that our area is sliding backward and now our regions are being "punished" for not obeying the rules. That is my word, but that's essentially what the Chief Medical Officer for Ontario said yesterday. Seriously??? Are we children? So, indoor gyms and restaurants are once again closed. So much for me standing in the rain booking a spot in spin class. 

I'll just write a couple of sentences about this, and then I need to move on. The government or the news is NOT reporting the facts. Oh sure, they are giving us ABSOLUTE numbers, and yes, they are increasing. But where are the percentages??? What is the daily percentage of new cases versus the number of tests today versus back in March, and what is the trend?? A monkey could see that the numbers they are feeding us are totally useless without percentage trends. 

And to say that we need to STAY HOME is crazy. OK - so stay home, but that doesn't mean you have to stay in your house!!! People - we are going to go mad if we stay in our houses. I don't care if winter is coming - we need to get our butts outside and go for walks or chats or whatever we can and need to do. 

I'm so fed up with the situation that YES - living back on the farm in Saskatchewan is a very cheery thought at the moment. 

PHEW!!! That feels better. And now onto the good stuff. 

I was getting tired of my Celebration quilt. Oh, not the quilt per se. But look at what was happening. The blocks are positioned on my portable design wall, and because I pass by there all the time, some of the blocks would fall off, and they got piled in a heap.

Enough is enough! It's time to get this quilt done. So I got busy, and this is what it looks like this morning.

It's not quite sewn together, but most of the horizontal rows are sewn together. I'll see what happens today if I get any more sewn together. I'd like to move that portable wall, so I can finish off the Aviatrix Medallion quilt that's behind it. That quilt just needs one more border. I need those design walls to put up a couple more projects, so that should be a focus today!

My big ironing board is stuck in the film studio corner, and it's a pain to keep running back and forth, so I dug out this ironing board. OH MY GOD. It's like a toy - it's so small!!!  I've been using a large rectangular ironing board for years, so the size of this one is a bit of a shock! But for the blocks I was sewing yesterday, it worked fine. But when I need to iron yardage or my quilts, I'm off to the other one in the corner.

Once I finished the Christmas Fig blocks, which you can't see today, and the Celebration quilt was partially together, it was time to move onto something else. I decided that I should work on PRISM Squared, which is part of my UFO homework for this month. 

I decided to change up the way it was sewn together. The pattern said to sew it in thirds, but how can you check your accuracy with thirds? So I sewed it together in quarters so I could check if it was going to have a wavy center or not. 

As you can see, that little bit of yellow hanging over the edge was going to be a problem. So I took a few tucks in those seams close to the center.

Look - that quarter of the circle now makes a square in the corner, and I'm happy with that.

Then I was able to sew two quarters together and used the floor as a guide if the seam was straight. Not bad.

And now that center part is completely together!!! I did get fussy and take in a few more seams at the center as it still seemed a bit ruffly.

Here's the center of the quilt. There are still two small ripples in the center (one on the left and one near the bottom of the circle), but I need to let it go. That should work out with the quilting. STOP fussing -- enough is enough!!!

I needed a couple of things from the mall, so I walked over. Here's an update on the construction of the new movie theatre. They have put in a whole series of new retaining walls.

The new theatre is considerably smaller than the store that was there before. Will this become some green space? patio area? I don't think so - maybe more parking????

I found what I needed - a second wireless mouse as I'm sharing with myself and when the laptop is downstairs, and the computer is on the main floor, and I need a mouse for both computers, well, I was getting in lots of steps. But I tell you this story to make a point. I could easily have gone online and purchased it from that big store, but I REFUSE to buy from them unless absolutely necessary. I got lots of steps in, and I supported a local physical business. 

If we don't do that, they are going to die! 

And besides, if I had stayed home, I wouldn't have seen this on the back of someone's car! 

Halloween is coming!!!!

On my walks in the neighborhood, I see lots of things. There is one house, and well, they leave their garage door open - when the kids are out playing or hanging out in their neighbor's garage where they have chairs and a TV set up for the teens to watch. This garage is chock-a-block FULL of stuff. I don't think they can even walk in the garage, it's that full!! Time for a clean sweep for that house!

But here's the really fun fact of the day!!!  Look at my distance on the Virtual Challenges? YES - that is 2,000 MILES that I've walked since the beginning of this year. That's the equivalent of 3,200 KM if you're into KM. 

My goal was to walk the entire distance (2,280.3 Miles) of Route 66 in one year - 365 days. That meant that I would have to walk an average of 6.3 miles per day. I have a few friends who keep saying that I've gone crazy and am WAY AHEAD. Well, I'd like to say that my average walk per day is 7.0 miles. All it took to get ahead was to walk an extra .7 mile per day to finish the walk this far ahead. My goal was more aggressive than theirs to start, so it makes sense that I will finish that much ahead of them. So - I didn't go crazy, and it just goes to show how much a wee bit extra every day can make a huge difference. And that's the same whether you're quilting, walking, reading, saving money, or whatever you happen to be doing. 

Based on my average, I'll finish in 39 days! I'm excited about that. And I need to walk an average of 7 miles every day because of my slightly more aggressive walk across Canada, which requires that I do 7 miles every day to stay on track. I'm about 3 miles behind on that one. But still, those Virtual Challenges have been a HUGE incentive to get me outside regardless of the weather to walk. 

I've managed to keep my weight and my eating under control (I'm a stress eater, so if I can walk my stress off, I don't eat!), so I'm thrilled to death and if that's all it takes - well, it's almost free, and I'm good with that!!!

On my walk across Canada, I'm at KM marker 414.0 and on my way to Thunder Bay. I'm not sure where I'll end up at the end of the year, but somewhere between Thunder Bay and Toronto! I'll let you know!!!

Celebration Show and Tell

 

When anything gets done - it's time for a celebration! I'm slowly working myself out of the mountain of deadlines that I let accumulate. It's not so much the quantity, it's the lack of time management! I'll survive through it, but I'll be glad when this coming week is over. 

Yesterday we had our two classes for the ongoing classes at The Hobby Horse. Of course, it was held via Zoom so no travel was required. I'm not sure how I would work in travel time at the moment. There's no time for travel. I did lose the internet a couple of times yesterday. I didn't call Bell, I was just too tired at the end of the day. But - I'll be calling today. 

I'm teaching FIVE of these ongoing classes. Yep - whose idea was that? Mine of course, and I love every minute of it. I have FIVE more scheduled for the coming year. And a lot of the past quilts from these classes are bogged down in my UFOs. BUT - the good news is that I'm almost up-to-date with the homework for ALL five of the current quilts. How is that? 

But I'm madly working on those UFOs for the UFO club and so there is definitely a light at the end of the tunnel. What's important in all this is that the number of UFOs being finished is greater than the number that is added. OK - so NONE are being added. I need to start and finish a project and I've been sticking to that pretty well. 

Today, I'm going to share the show and tell from the Celebration class. What's even better is that the written homework has already been sent out, as well as the written homework for Aviatrix Medallion which was on Friday. I have two more to get ready (hopefully today). Then a little bit of sewing and I'll be caught up again! I also updated the class list for the fall and the ongoing classes for next year. I hope to get that posted to my blog by tomorrow. I still have a few writing assignments that are waiting and those will happen this afternoon. I'm getting things done - it just seems like there is so much! BUT - no panic is allowed. Just take one thing at a time. Breathe  - breathe  -- breathe.

And yet, I can't be too worried about it - I did go for a long walk with both girls last night and I did sit in the backyard to read for a while. I mean - it's summer - we have to enjoy the good weather while we can! 

OK -- what's really frustrating about this silly internet connection? It never used to go down. And you can't blame overcapacity on the bandwidth. It just went down. It's not even 7 AM on a Sunday morning. You can't tell me that everyone is up and using it. There is SOMETHING WRONG. GRRRRR! What's "hilarious" about this is that I don't have to do anything to get the connection back. All that's necessary is to wait three minutes and it's back up. Now, why is that? And I know that it goes down because I stream the radio on the darn thing or I'm on the computer or on a Zoom call. Sometimes, it's just a blip and sometimes, it goes completely down. 

Now onto the Show and Tell. Some people are further along than others. I'm showing something from everyone in the class regardless of where they are. 

The first one belongs to Judy. A lot of lights in this quilt. I can't wait to see what happens when it gets larger as the coloring is quite different from the others.

Diane is using some darker colors and so far I like it. The outer border might be a wee bit dark, but if something lighter gets put behind the dark, it should be fine.

Grace is working on some bright and funky colors. I love that mottled green/orange/yellow batik that she used.

This is Susan's quilt and WOW. That pink/green color combination rocks! I can't wait to see this one finished!

Wendy colored those "flowers" at the corners of the center to match the flowers in her busy print. It looks amazing!!!

Kathi LOVES these colors - notice that the quilt matches her bedspread! I love that she took the pink and placed it on both sides of that dark border. A whole different look just by changing one color!

This is Marilyn's COVID quilt. She didn't buy any fabrics but used what she had. And she has the center stitched together. It's an interesting mix of color and I think it's going to look great when it's done. See how that orange along the edges pulls out the star in the center?

Valerie has chosen BRILLIANT jewel tones for her quilt. I love how that dark border is making everything pop, inside, and outside that frame.

Cindy is making a very masculine quilt. I just love looking at all the variations to see how the color placements and values can make the same quilt look so different.

This is Lynne's version of the quilt. Very soft and pretty but the color combination works. We all agreed that this one looks the most like a real tile floor in some European castle!

Catherine is working with batiks and look at how those flowers pop. They remind me of cacti flowers for some reason! But it works.

Nancy is doing greens. What I love is that she's used a solid black for those large patches and it doesn't overwhelm the quilt. She also used a busy print for the echo behind the flowers. Totally changes the look!

Patti is creating a much darker version of the quilt. It looks great though and she's contemplating changing that center block to something a bit darker as the yellow does tend to take center stage.

 Linda is doing renovations on her sewing room so she's a bit behind. But this grey/black/white and red color combination is going to look amazing.

This quilt is Mary's. Wow-what a totally different look from the others. It's so soft and very feminine.

This is my version of the quilt with the blocks for this month's homework in place. There are only eight blocks left to go.

Here's the thing about these quilts - you learn so much! I learn from the students and they learn from me. It just doesn't get any better than that. And where else would you get to see so many colorways at one time? And where would you get advice while working on your quilt? Oh yes - not only do we do have our show and tell, but we offer advice (if asked or not!) and it's a great way to stay in touch with each other!

I also love the Zoom format (I know - you know that I like Zoom), but here's the thing. If we were doing this in class, we would NOT be seeing the entire quilts. We would be seeing the blocks for that month. Personally, I'm loving seeing the quilts as they are made. It's still going to be a WOW factor when we do the final Show and Tell in November. 

Everyone has done a great job so far and I can't wait until November!!!

I have a wee bit of proofing to do and it should be ready to post tomorrow. Yes -- ALL of them will be held on ZOOM so that means that ANYONE, ANYWHERE can be a participant! How exciting is that? 

On that note, I'd better get moving. It's UFO club today and I see that not everyone has sent pictures of their homework for the show and tell. My guess is that they're madly working on it right now!!! Like I should be!
