Making spaces and NOT filling them up!

Not only did I cave and put my pants back on (from wearing shorts instead of not wearing any pants at all!), but I also turned the heat back on in the house. It's cool outside! The girls are loving this weather!

And the decluttering motivation has hit again! I swear - once you start to see those open spaces and NOTHING to fill them up, well, it's inspiring!

I started by pulling everything from that corner in the office. Yes - another instance of pulling everything out, but will I actually deal with it?

The current pile of crap to deal with

I pushed Miss Murphy's toy box into the corner, which, of course, she had to check out. She still has TWO toy boxes in this room, and I don't think she needs two. We'll deal with that another day.

MOM - I haven't smelled this corner in a long time

Then I could actually open those doors, which I don't think have been open for years! I got rid of the dust and dirt that had collected there, and all is good. I don't like using those doors as there is another door into the office. So they stay shut.

The office doors are open!

One of the things I pulled from the corner was a nice box filled with magazines. I know!!! Didn't Meditations for Mortals tell me that I don't need to read everything that comes into my house? I don't and I shouldn't, but I'm going to struggle with this one, so bear with me.

Then I looked at the shelf beside the computer, which also had a lot of "absolutely MUST read this" reading material. Enough is enough!

More reading material

So, I pulled the reading material from that shelf.

Let's deal with this!

By 9:15 AM, the empty boxes were neatly stored in the garage. Since I plan to use them as donation boxes, I'm OK with this. It's neat and tidy and off the garage floor, all is good.

The empty boxes are stored in the garage

Then the box of magazines was emptied, and the reading material from the shelf was added to it.

Some of the reading material

This is going to be very hard for me to deal with. I know - those of you who just grab and toss are shouting - just throw it! And I will, but I want to go through it first. However, I'll be much faster. I need to learn to let go of this stuff, so I have to do it at my own pace. I need to learn to let go of things like this!

The entire stack is currently still sitting on the office floor, and I doubt I'll finish it today, but I'll try my best to get some of it gone. Maybe I should set a goal of tossing enough so that what's left fits back in the box. Just TEMPORARY!!!
More reading material

The best part of all this is I KNOW BETTER. I know how to deal with it, and I will, but I just need time to get my brain around the fact that I don't need to read or even browse any of this stuff.

Then I rearranged things on that little shelf so the box of paper crap that was in the corner is now on a shelf.

Did you see that there is currently one empty shelf? Yes, I rearranged some things, but I'm OK with that. Sometimes you have to shuffle to make it look neater, and then I can tackle it when I'm ready. I will get it done.

Filling up some space - temporarily

And now the floor where I pulled everything out is clear. Yeah!!! I'm getting so much better at this. One more hurdle to conquer - the magazines and papers. I'm getting there! While we don't want to dwell on the past, one must look at the successes we've had and celebrate them. Learn from them and move on!

The clutter for the day is gone

What I need to decide is how to browse those magazines. I won't, can't, and don't want to read every word, but there's likely some tidbit that interests me. So the trick is to find that happy medium - read the article and toss the magazine. I have a whole stack of magazines to refine my technique!

I went through my university's alumni magazine (Concordia in Montreal). I don't read them - I mostly browse the obituaries and see if anyone from my grade did anything exciting. Never! So why do I keep looking, as I really don't remember anyone much?

But I came across this little gem. It was just a happy reminder of a great time. Instead of writing a thesis at the end of my MBA, Dominique and I organized the Concordia MBA Case Competition. It was, and still is, a huge event, and now schools from around the globe participate. We had to organize the event at a local hotel. Many schools across Canada participated, and we had to find judges, case studies, and arrange food for everyone for two or three days. It was a huge event, but we did a fantastic job, and it was loads of fun, despite the hard work, as we were still finishing our other classes at the same time!

Article about the MBA Case Competition

I think it was shortly after we organized it that a committee took over, or something, although it's still mainly organized by the students. I even remember the black dress I bought ($700 in 1990) to attend and MC the finale! Imagine me in a little black dress! I loved that dress, but it's long gone!

I must see if I can find any pictures of those events!

This was the quote in my tea yesterday! Oh, how true --- I don't really need anything - I'm so happy with my personal growth and comfortable with myself that I need very little, which is why I'm happy with my faded shorts!

Quote of the day

But speaking of acquiring things, what do you think of this?

Can you see Murphy and Lexi in there?

The photo is probably generated by AI, but it's cute. But instead of me pushing them on a bicycle, they should be pulling me while I sit in the buggy!!

I bought a calendar a while back, not for the dates, but for the pictures of great places to hike. This is the Yukon. And this is so true! In 2010, I rode my bicycle up White's Pass in Alaska, and when I got to the top, the view was breathtaking. I'd been through the Rockies many times as a kid, but the top of White's Pass will blow you away. It was worth every pant and puff up the hill. Now this is NOT the view from White's Path, but it's close.

The wide open spaces in the Yukon

And unlike other places, the highways in the Yukon are often located at the top or near the top of the hills, which provide stunning views. I'd go back in a heartbeat!!!!

OK - I've decided to divide and conquer those magazines. I just sorted them out somewhat, and you'll have to wait until tomorrow to see what happens. Maybe nothing? Maybe a lot!!!

Here's the Zoom link for today's virtual retreat.

The decluttering continues

Stand up, sit down!

Even though I was supposed to be at my desk, writing, I needed to get back upstairs. I wanted to continue the momentum and finish the year - well, start the new year with those rooms in order.

This is what happened.

While the guest room was more or less organized, some of my stuff had been moved to Studio U for the big clean-up, and some had not been put away. This was the state of the room when I walked in.

Studio U is a bit messy

Stuff from the guest room

These are all samples, quilts, or tote bags that must be dealt with. Some of it came from the guest room.

More untidiness

The first thing was to open the blinds—even though it was a foggy day, let's let some light in here!

Open the blinds!

I put all the batting and cushion forms in this closet. It still looks like a mess, but it is mainly sorted. I have pulled batting bits to use with my community project quilts. That is downstairs, and I'm happily working through the pile. As I need more, I'll raid this closet. Let's hope it'll be pretty empty by the end of 2025! The bottom line is that all the batting is together in one place, except the rolls of batting, which are in Studio B.

The batting closet

Two large tubs in Studio U hold finished items. Good grief—what am I going to do with all of it? I need some as samples for classes, but I will never use the rest.

A tub of finished projects

There are loads of tote bags and zippered pouches, some super cute. Look at these—they are about 2" square!

Cube zipper pouch

I've decided to bundle some of it up and offer it to friends I see, understanding that NO ONE is allowed to take anything just because. They have to have a purpose for it, and most quilters already have piles of their own stuff. Perhaps I should load the tubs on my wagon and go up and down my street to find a home for the stuff.

I've offered the entire two tubs (minus the few samples I need) to someone who participates in a Christmas craft fair. I think the proceeds go to their church. If that doesn't work out, I'll try to find someone who does craft fairs, and the proceeds can be donated to a food bank or something.

I just don't want to be bothered with it! The tubs also contain zippered pouches and journal covers.

Then, I moved the smaller quilts and samples that wouldn't fit in the tubs back to the cube shelving in the guest room. Those quilts will be donated throughout this coming year, and the samples will hopefully find a home in the empty tubs. Notice there are still FOUR empty cubes!

Some of my stuff was moved back to the guest room

And this is what Studio U looks like now.

A wonderful space to work

This looks much better than before.

Neat and tidy!

Everything was put away quickly, as everything has a home! The few items on the cutting table will be donated. I just need to contact certain people to make that happen.

A beautiful space to sew

I even woke up this morning thinking of selling my Horn cabinet, which you see in the above picture (the white sewing cabinet on the left). It's sitting in this room and not being used. I'd love to sew in that room, but the internet is practically non-existent. I could set up my travel sewing machine and sew on nice days. It's a beautiful room, and I feel bad that it isn't being used anymore.

So, if anyone thinks they might want a new sewing table, let me know. I'd have to find a price, and it's heavy, so two people will need to move it out of the house. DH is NOT able to help at this time.

Gosh -- it's so easy to get rid of stuff! Oh, should I say - it's so easy to let go! I'm shocking myself at what is happening. There literally won't be anything left in the house! Look out, Murphy! Look out, Lexi! Look out, DH!

So here are some shelves in the office. The top shelf is a lot of books about decluttering and organizing. Do I need them? Maybe not, and it's almost an oxymoron at this point, but I enjoy reading them, and I'm finding a tidbit or two, so it's OK to read them. Once I'm done, they go into the recycling.

Shelves on the bookcase in the office

By the end of 2025, I want that shelf to be empty. Here is the complete open shelving in that bookcase. It's full but neat!

Open shelving in the office

The top shelf is filled with puzzle books and magazines. Yes, I know—how many does one need? So, if anyone is interested in some, let me know. But -- you have to use them. They cannot become clutter in your house. I believe it's mostly logic puzzles and Sudoku. I need to keep a small selection, like the equivalent of that black box, and the rest could go. Where is Yagana when I need her?

There are three boxes on those shelves, and I'm afraid to look in them. I suspect there's a pile of junk in each. I'm not ready for the junk yet, although if I had it in one spot, Yagana could zip through it quickly.

There are some books on the lower two shelves that I want to read. My goal is to clear much of that by the end of 2025. I'll do comparison pictures!!! I need to go HERE before I go to the library!

Good grief—I found two books people had loaned me. That's why I hate it when they insist I take their books. I can pretty much find anything at the library or online resources. No worries - these are now out and are first on the list when I need a physical book.

Books loaned by friends

This is the open shelving on the second bookcase. It's a little bit messier and has more boxes. Who knows what is in those boxes? I'm almost afraid to open them. And all those binders? What's in the binders?

More open shelving in the office

Oh, did you notice the empty spot on the other shelves? I have something special to put there, and hopefully, I'll organize it later today.

Yes - I think I'll take some before pictures for New Year's Day and then compare them in one year. Let's see if I'm really making progress. I am - I'm kidding! But I want to know how much, and maybe that will be enough incentive to get the first round in this office done!!!

Speaking of progress, I made BIG progress yesterday. I did some sewing while we had a Virtual Retreat last night (we closed up just before 9 p.m.). I had done some cutting in the afternoon (more on my project tomorrow), but the design board with the pieces was NOT beside the sewing machine, and I had to get up very often to press and grab the next piece. Stand up—sit down!

But the real progress is this.

Conquer 2024 - DONE!!!!

I did it—I walked 4,500 km this year. I won't do that again, though—I need to slow down. That was the equivalent of 12.33 km daily, which was easy on some days and challenging on others! But a stretch goal is a good thing!

I had three days remaining to complete the job! Yesterday, all the extra steps to get to the ironing board, which is NOT close to my sewing machine, helped. Is my process inefficient? Do I care? I care more about keeping my mobility than I do about being efficient!

So all is good at my house. My leg pain has eased up - it's still there, but not nearly as intense as it was several weeks ago, and that is a blessing. I must NOT become complacent and let the investigation into the cause drop. I will continue because while I'm better, I'm not done with this. I think it was a wake-up call, and if I don't heed it, there will be much worse to deal with. The gentle stretching and stand-up/sit-down routines are all working to ease the pressure on the nerve. Whatever it takes!

WAIT -- we have Virtual Retreat again today. We start at Noon EST.

The motivation to declutter continues

You know you've got the decluttering bug bad when that's all you can think about during spin class! That little bit of space on each surface was niggling in the back of my head.

The empty space on the desk

So I took a couple of things off the desk and then put what was on the table onto the desk.

The space was quickly gone

I know -- I'm just moving the junk from one spot to another, but then I took all the "current" stuff and put it on the table. This includes some stuff that was on the floor and beside my computer desk. I do not have the ideal desk to work at, and I'm only replacing it once I can figure out what exactly I want.

What I need to deal with this week

There is still space on the table, and I need to get myself in gear, hang up a few pictures, pitch a few papers, and make phone calls. With minimal effort, a good part of that table could be clear. The trick is not to add stuff to it until all this is dealt with.

Stuff that I WANT to deal with

I keep telling myself the same thing for the cutting table and Studio B. Why can't I get that last part done? It's almost as if my brain says, "You do NOT want a clean table." So, I keep stalling on those things. I need to find a way to work past that. I'm hoping it's different. I'm motivated differently, but I'm unsure how long the motivation will stay.

But I'm in good shape for today. There's a customer quilt to load this morning, and all the silly extra things got sorted and put away. I will clean and wind bobbins for one machine and that's all set up. I've got an embroidery project set up for the second machine, and here's to hopefully a productive day.

The one thing I fail at is keeping a "to-do" list. I've tried dozens of methods, and all seem to work for a while, but then I get off to something else. It drives me crazy why I can't stick to one thing. I'm certain that it's the sheer volume of that "to-do" list. I do a pretty good job of keeping things in my head, but that's not good enough.

Yesterday, I wrote a list of ten things I would like to finish. All were small, and some would only require a few minutes. I accomplished TWO of the ten. So what do I do today? Add two more items? Keep working on the list?

I will watch my habits to see why I'm not accomplishing more on the paperwork side. Part of it is that I must dedicate time to office work. It's not always easy to find time because it's the thing I hate the most.

Even if I schedule ONE hour a day to work on the lists, perhaps that is the key, and then I NEED to focus on that list. Then, I must stick with that routine until it becomes a habit. Wish me luck! That's what has caused the issue with all the crap - lack of focus on something I don't want to do!

However, one of the things I wanted to accomplish was to print the updated list of the "to be quilted" pile, and that is done! The book is now back downstairs with the tubs.

The new list for the "to be quilted" pile

Wait, I did get the two borders on that small quilt. It got quilted and bound, and it's in the mail. So, I did accomplish something yesterday! You can't see it yet.

I've emptied a bolt of fabric this morning (do I get a discount?). The fabric will be used for the backing of a Quilts of Valour quilt. The batting bits are fused together, and I'll work on the backing this afternoon. That's the quilt for tomorrow.

An empty bolt

One thing I need to ensure I do is deal with the paper that comes in every day. Thankfully, it's nowhere near what it used to be. But when I came back from a walk, I found this on my doorstep. It has no name on it; it's like I just purchased it from the store. Why?

On my doorstep

Since I'm not into fashion, this will be trashed, but I look at the picture on the front, especially the shoes, and I ask, "Why?"  OK, so I'm getting old. NO WAIT—I would have asked that question at any point in my life!

So, I'm on the lookout for a couple more metal shelves, and I spotted some near me and texted the owner. We went back and forth. She didn't have stand-alone shelves (unlike the photos), and she didn't have the size I wanted. So there I was with two shelves that would work but were already assembled, meaning I couldn't carry them in the car, and they weren't the right size, but I forged ahead and thought I could make it work.

Her listing was 10 weeks old, and I suspect they had been in charge of selling loads of shelving from a warehouse. When I looked up the address, it was a house. When my rental van fell through yesterday, and I let her know I could come today, she IMMEDIATELY texted me back and said, "Too late. She had dozens of people texting her." However, I could leave a deposit to guarantee them. This was the second time asking for a deposit.

The entire interaction put me off, so I responded that if I really wanted them bad enough, they would be there today. Scam? I don't think so, but it was her attitude. Lady, there are oodles of those metal shelving units out there! I'm very glad that the rental van deal fell through! I won't be going back to her.

Well, I'm going to have to be very disciplined today. I'm listening to the 6th Harry Potter book - The Half-Blood Prince. I've never listened to it - GASP -- I know. The book was published in 2005 - almost 20 years ago and I've not read it! I went back and started to reread the entire series a couple of times, so rereading them was fun but not exciting. Well, now this is NEW. So I will have to discipline myself for ONE HOUR to do paperwork, and then, as a reward, I can listen to Harry Potter for the rest of the day!

What I like about the "current" table in the office is that I can easily grab a piece of paper or two and deal with it. Also, having the limited desk space that I have relatively clear is a good thing. So, let's hope that I can remain focused. I CAN do this!!!

Oh gosh -- I thought I'd have a peek through that Fashion magazine and found TWO articles of interest. That's my lunch reading material, and then that magazine goes. And now we know why I have so much crap in the house!

I'm excited about tackling that "current" table, and I've got this!

Have a super day!!!

Ciao!!!

Decluttering the office

You are going to be so proud of me! I'm so proud of me!

OK -- before being proud, I'm pretty embarrassed, and I think I should preface what I'm about to share with you with this statement:

My name is Elaine, and I am a hoarder!

This all started because we were pulling samples for Quilt Canada, and one of my colleagues always has labels on all her samples. I have to blame someone, and she gets the blame today! Although this blame is a POSITIVE thing. She uses laminated business cards. So the question was, did I have business cards, or would I need to buy some? Could I use paper or some other form of paper and pre-cut them?

I bought laminating sheets (a few that self-laminate and some that need a machine). Our new central library has a laminating machine for the public to use. I managed to find the laminating sheets at Wal-Mart. But what about cards? I've been mulling that over on the walks and decided I might need something slightly larger than a business card. I wasn't sure, and Wal-Mart didn't have business cards, so I would have to go to Staples.

I was certain I already had blank business cards, but where were they? I knew they would be in the office supply cabinet if I had some.

So, yesterday morning, I opened the doors. ACK!!! While everything was in one place, that's pretty scary, and let's say that it was hard to find anything in there, and there literally was no more room.

The office supply cabinet

So, I tackled one shelf at a time. I was only going to go as far as finding those business cards. I started by putting stuff on a chair, which was silly.

Starting to unload the cabinet

Only office supplies were supposed to be in that cabinet, but I found two pieces of office clutter. Look at the date!!! I'm sure I will find a lot of that kind of thing in the rest of the office. And did you notice that I seem to gravitate to the areas behind doors in this space? I can't seem to tackle the visual clutter sitting on the tables! Well, I am, but it's slow going.

In the recycling!

I found an empty wrapper of printer paper. Seriously?

Why?

I found some cute little cards for messages I probably bought to put in M's lunch.

The front

The back

I had quite a few. There were two different messages, and I found some other inspirational cards later on.

A pile of those little cards

OK—so I started on one shelf, which progressed to two, then three, and soon (OK—several hours later), the cabinet was EMPTY!!! Doesn't it give you a good feeling to see an empty cabinet? The old me would have been trembling to see all my precious stuff out of the cabinet, but the new me was excited, and I couldn't stop.

The cabinet is empty

Here are some of the treasures I found.

I know you're asking yourself, how many office supplies does one household need, and what was in there? Journals and notebooks, along with the office supplies. I had a thing for journals, and shockingly, I had several of the same kind! Some of them were generic ones, but some of them either had a bicycle or sewing theme or were orange. How many journals does one person need?

What's even worse is that I went through them, and often, I found something written on the first page—and that was it! Not all—I'll say that 90% of the journals were brand new, and some are still in their original wrapping.

I wasn't going to throw out a perfectly good journal, so I ripped out the pages with crap on them. I had two piles - one from M and one from me. M's is in the recycling, and I'll go through my small pile in greater detail because I question my sanity when I quickly glance at some of the writing. Remember -- this is all about me and my memories and then it can go!

What I ripped from the journals

But the piles of what I ripped out are small, as you can see above. Some of M's stuff was cute. Look—she made a quilt pattern for me.

A quilt pattern for Mom!

I found packages of decorative writing pads, and if anyone would like them, they are yours! I don't know if they would be good for journal making, as many of them are directional in the portrait style, but I don't want any of them.

Sheets of decorative paper for the printer

Yes -- I did find office supplies and some photo paper. That stuff I kept for the moment.

Some actual office supplies

Did I find business cards? So help me, but yes, I found business cards. In fact, I found at least five bundles of them. If I had rushed to Staples to buy more, I would have kicked myself to the curb!

Business cards

There were several tubs in the cabinet, and one of them was filled with block pads of paper—most of them never opened. OH GOSH --- some of this stuff dates back to the days when I worked for Hewlett Packard, and I haven't worked there in over 25 years! I had an entire stack of paper with my name on it, as we used to handwrite notes on documentation. I kept that since it had my name on it, but so much of it went.

Blocks of note paper

OK -- so I know you're asking yourself - what the heck did I do with the stuff? I had already started a donation box, which I found in the pile of boxes in the office. That pile was temporary, and I've been keeping any decent-sized boxes so I could use them as donation boxes.

A donation box was already started

The kitchen looked like this at one point, and it was bad - there was stuff everywhere. I attempted to deal with the giveaway stuff as I decided what to keep and what to toss.

The keep pile

At the end of that exercise, I had EIGHT boxes of stuff for donation. I'm going to call my local school and ask if they want the boxes of office supplies, which are mostly sketchbooks, journals, school notebooks, loose-leaf paper, pads of paper—both lined and graph—and little notepads. The white box on the wall is for the thrift store.

Boxes for donation

Can you believe that? Why do I get myself into these messes? I swear every time I spotted a cute journal, I purchased it, even if I already had the same one at home. It was a disease, and I know that I went shopping for something to do. I wasn't always happy to stay at home for the entire day, so retail shopping was my therapy. Thank goodness, I've curbed that habit!!!

I found some cord name clips. I found TWO packages of the darn things. Who knew that I already had something that I needed.  They are in the basket of cords, and I'll deal with naming them later.
Cord naming devices

Speaking of business cards, I also found boxes of my business cards. Seriously? How many does one person need? I haven't dealt with those yet.

Already printed business cards

The clean-up job took about four hours from start to finish. Once a donation box was filled, it was hauled to the front hall to lessen the mess in the kitchen. I had sorted it into piles as I went, so putting it back in the cupboard was easy.

The after!!!

Oh, my God! Does that even look like the same cupboard? Did you notice there is ONE completely empty shelf? I can't put anything on it at the moment as it's missing one support. BUT I have a bag of them in a closet in the basement, and I know exactly where they are!!!

There are TWO shelves of blank journals! I will never use that many in my life, but for the moment, I'm keeping them. I think I'm allowed after everything else that I gave away. I thought it might be hard, but my mind was now set on cleaning up the mess, so it was much easier than I thought it would be.

Do not judge me! This cabinet can definitely be reviewed again, but for the moment, it stays the way it is.

One shelf is devoted to envelopes, one to sketchbooks, two to journals, one to printer paper, one to random stuff like empty folders and business cards, and one to small pads of paper.

While it was extremely satisfying to see the amount of empty room in the cabinet, there was nothing more satisfying than closing the door and ACTUALLY hearing CLICK as the doors were able to shut properly.

The doors can shut properly!

OK—I confess that I went into the office and opened that door several times to survey my work and to hear that click!!!

I didn't tackle the top of the cupboard - perhaps today, but it's stuff I want to keep, and now that there is an empty shelf, once I get the support, I can eliminate everything on the top.

The top is next

And so, without any thought, that cupboard in the office is done! I must survey the other areas and see what goes next. NO -- I need to take the same amount of time and tackle either the desktop or the table top and do the same thing. Most of what I find will be tossed in the garbage or recycled, and it's going to take longer and have less visual impact, but it must be done.

While I'm super excited about what happened, I can't believe I accumulated that much stuff. But we're going to move on—there's no sense lamenting what we can't change. The most important thing from that is to learn never to do that again.

Does anyone need some help? I'm getting pretty ruthless these days, and I can talk you out of keeping most things!

Now for those hooks, I purchased the other day. This is what they look like, and their job is to connect those metal shelving units to each other. In the case of warehouse storage.

New metal hooks

What I used them for is to hang my digital cutter mats!! They are very sturdy, so I can easily hang multiple mats on one hook. Since I can access the back of this shelf as well, I'm going to purchase another box of hooks and hang ALL the mats up. Currently, they are stored on the top shelf.

Hanging the digital cutter mats

Gosh—I love when things come together, and the more you play with decluttering, the easier it becomes. On my walks, I think about possible storage places. I will say that I LOVE this storage shelf for all the bits of my embroidery and sewing machines. It's all in one place, it's easy to get to, it's large enough, and it was the best $100 I spent.

If you are looking for this type of shelving, DO NOT buy new. Many warehouses are going out of business or replacing their shelving; tons of it can be found on Facebook Marketplace—at least in my area.

Some are assembled, so you'll need a van to move them, or some are already apart. I want to buy two more shelves as I have another problem area and didn't know how to address it. But when I thought of these shelving units (on wheels), that was the answer to my problem. I hope to get that resolved in the next couple of weeks.

On that note, I'm off to spin class this morning!! I'm so excited. That's because of my cleaning. Imagine what I'll be like when the entire office is done!!!

Have a super day!!!

Ciao!!!!
