Done, done, and DONE!

Thanks for the heads up on the links. I have to click each link twice to get the HTTPS thing at the beginning. I've been very careful, but perhaps I've slipped up on a couple. I will attempt to pay even more attention to that little detail!

I did not post about Colour My World yesterday, nor will I do it today. I'll aim for tomorrow. Today, it's all about the finishes! 

I have hosted the UFO Club for over five years, and in that time, things have gotten done not only for me but for everyone who has participated in the club. It's very therapeutic and an eye-opener. There are many UFOs, and they need to get done. It is NOT a club for everyone - I can't make you fulfill your commitments - you have to be motivated to do that! 

In the past, I focused on larger projects, and sometimes I worked on the same project for many months. While the project got completed, it was sometimes disheartening as I never saw a reduction in the pile of stuff on those current project tables. And let's face it, while there are large UFOs that need to be completed, there are just as many, if not more, of those silly little things that just get forgotten and may require less than 60 minutes to complete. 

So in 2026, I decided to focus on the little projects or those that are almost complete to see if I could make a dent in the piles. Here's what happened in January. Remember, with my semi-retired schedule, I now have a lot more time on my hands. So if I'm not sewing homework for my TWO classes, I'm working on material for the TWO clubs, or UFOs. Focus -- it's that simple! Although I do have some new stuff that needs to be done as well. 

I had set aside several projects that were related to binding. So I had to make a ton of binding for various projects. There are two other bindings I made that are not shown in this photo. Some projects required a lot of binding, and others did not!

And now the binding is made for this One Block Wonder quilt that needs quilting.

These are four quilting samples I did a while back, but never finished the binding. The items were trimmed, and the binding is on. They are completely done!

If you remember, last week I quilted my Vintage Christmas, which was also part of my UFO assignment for this month. I taught this quilt as an online Sew Along in 2020. When I peeked in the book, I found the distribution list of participants. There were twenty of us on that list. I wonder how many of those quilts got finished? I know one other one did for sure, because I quilted it and it hung in the Concurrent Show at Quilt Canada last year. Thanks, Shelly! Did anyone else finish?

I forged ahead, trimmed it, and bound the quilt.

I also got myself together and made a label for the quilt, as it's one that I'll keep. I am definitely keeping all the ones I've taught in the sew-alongs, and there are about 80 of them!!

Now, this quilt didn't just need a label and binding to be called done; four blocks needed buttons sewn on. Do you know how horrible it is to sew buttons on a finished quilt? I may never do that again. I sewed them on by hand, wasn't a fan, wanted to quit several times, but I stuck to it, and it is completely done. The buttons had been stored in labelled plastic bags and were stuck to the quilt top, so at least I didn't have to search for them to sew on. I may have caved and not done it if I had to find buttons!

Thank goodness that is done. And guess what? This quilt was also on the visual to-do list, so I had another happy dance as I took the picture down. That one was also included in the Many Blocks category, so I think I had better start working on another category, which is precisely what I have planned this week!

I wasn't sure what to do with the pictures I was removing, so the last one was still sitting on the table beside the list (TSK TSK!). Then I thought, "I'll get a small envelope, put the pictures in there, and keep it attached to the bottom of the rack." I am writing the month that the project was completed, so at the end of the year, I can revel in all my successes once again!!!

But WAIT -- there's more that got done. I had to make the binding and hand-stitch it to this sample I made. I make a lot of samples, and they don't always get finished. There are a couple more small projects from the binding class I did several years ago, and I would love to have them all done. I'm very close to making that happen.

And then there are these two projects. One needed the binding sewn on, and the other needed the final join done. Guess what? Both are done, but you'll see these again tomorrow because there was another part to this project.

There was one more thing in the UFO blue bucket for this month: fixing DH's golf towel. It technically wasn't a UFO, but since it had been hanging around for months, it was now a repair UFO. 

How hard could this be, and why did he want the towel repaired? After looking it over, I suspect he paid a reasonable price for it, as it's not an ordinary towel. 

Somehow, it got caught in the wheels of his push cart, and the little carabiner got ripped off. So I grabbed the towel and my seam ripper and pulled out the loose stitches. Then I went to sew it, and OH MY— we have a problem. Can you see the problem?

Yes, there is a HUGE magnet attached to the towel in the corner where I need to do the stitching!! And as soon as it got close to that large stitch plate, it just clamped down and wasn't going to move! 

Hmmm --- how to fix this? So I lifted the magnet and held it, then stitched the little loop back onto the towel. Back and forth, several times, so hopefully it will stay put!

And there it is—the loop with the carabiner is back on the towel. I don't know why it has the carabiner and the magnet. What do I know about golf towels? The bottom line is that it's fixed.

And then I told DH I needed a "reward" for fixing that towel, so he bought me a plane ticket to Italy! Now I like that kind of reward! Actually, we needed to book our trip tickets, so that got done. This will be a weird trip because technically we are travelling together (AGAIN!!!), but then we're not really. So you will have to wait for that one to see what happens!!

I hope people don't think I'm a nutcase because I'm celebrating how happy I am right now. That was one thing that Gail Blanke also mentioned in her book - Throw Out Fifty Things. When things are going great in our lives, people get scared and think they don't deserve that happiness. Well, if I had any of that in my head, I've decided to throw it out and embrace the fact that things are going well. 

Now they aren't just going well because I'm getting lucky, not on your life. They are going well because of what I'm doing. I'm taking charge of how I live and have worked very hard on the decluttering. It's taken over ten years to get it right! It's taken even longer to get the mental focus I need to complete these UFOs, and it's taken a long time not to feel the need to start something new! 

Only me, myself, and I are responsible for that happiness! And as I was having my happy dance in front of the visual to-do list, I remembered this quote that hangs at the top of that rack!!! How true!!!!

And so that pile of small UFOs is done, and everything is put away. If you look closely, you'll spot a dent on the current project tables, but there are many more small projects where those came from. The blue bin is again filled with small projects, and I need to start (slowly) working on them. 

It all makes myheart sing, and trust me, when I was working on some of those small things, I was bored to tears! Well, I wasn't bored, but some of those jobs were tedious, and I wanted to quit. BUT if I did, the alternative would be for those items to remain a UFO, and I am DETERMINED to stick to them until they are done! I can do it! This month was proof of that!

I had to laugh because one of the ladies set a goal to complete a small kit she bought years ago. Actually, she had purchased two, one for each of her kids. One was done, the other hadn't been started. Guess what? That's like starting a brand new project and getting a UFO done at the same time. That's how I feel when I open up some of this stuff. I don't need shiny and new - I want things done and out of the way. New priorities!!!

Remember - it's all about attitude!! OUR attitude!!!

Clearing up the little jobs - one at a time

Slow and steady! Therapeutic! I hope others feel that because after the Virtual Retreat, I think a "few" people have been organizing their sewing spaces. I heard people having been refolding their fabrics so they fit nicely on the shelves, scraps have been pitched, patterns are being reevaluated, and a whole lot more. 

Doesn't it feel good? I swear, the more that I slow down and actually accomplish those niggly little tasks, the more I want to do them and actually get something done instead of shoving it to the side. 

Let's take a look at what is happening. Here's my dust cover for the Momento (my large digital cutter).

All those half-square triangles! I threw it on the long arm and quilted the ends in a diagonal plaid, and the center was a different pattern. Let's just say that I need some lessons on that, as the scale of the pattern at either end is NOT the same. OK -- let's dig out some fabric and do some experimenting. But overall, I like it, and I'm OK with the quilting not being of the same scale. If I didn't tell you, you wouldn't notice. 

The ends are also quilted. I quilted up a small piece of fabric and then cut the ends from that. The seams inside were covered with binding and hand-stitched on one side, which I hadn't done in a long time. Then I machine-stitched the binding to the bottom.  And it's DONE! 

That allowed me to move on to the next project, which is the quilt backing. I didn't do anything on it yesterday as I was chatting, and I knew I needed some concentration. Perhaps later this afternoon after Monday sewing. YES—even though it's a holiday in Canada, we always sew! 

And I was able to complete more stuff off that table. I'm almost finished, and I should be able to clear it today. Then, I can put out the puzzle as a reward. 

I won this small wall hanging at a guild show twenty years ago, and one of the yo-yos burst open. It's been like that for years. It was time to fix it.

I had to remove the yo-yo from the piece, and the outer edges were turned in, which I guess is normal. It's been so long since I made a yo-yo that I can't remember. Anyway, the wall hanging is back to normal, and no one would know that one of them popped a seam.

I had to "fix" two other samples with the glue gun—oops, I forgot to take a picture of those. One has wristwatch faces on it, one came loose, and the other had some ribbons that needed to be put back in place. OK, I'll get pictures to share with you tomorrow. But both of those had been sitting for a long time in need of repair and now they are done. 

Then, back to pressing those scraps. A pile of blue and green still needed to be processed.

I'm happy to report that the blue is done. OH -- that red dot is my yo-yo! I had to dig out a new shoe box for the blue as my current box is full. The triangles go in another place, and the stuff on the left is polyester, which does not go in my scrap boxes. 

That leaves the pile of green and there's a story behind the green, which I'll share tomorrow. I'm going to work on the green as I really need to get it done and I will. I am NOT leaving this out to become clutter. I value my peace of mind too much to do that. 

I didn't take a picture of the cutting table or the other table, as there are a few things that need to be put away, and I was getting tired last night. That's the first thing to do this morning—and it'll only take a few minutes! 

Yesterday was our "out of the box" class and the topic was TEA, T, or TEE. This group might be small, but the creativity is HUGE! It inspired me to dig out my tea sets. This is one of them. Can you guess how big they are?

Here's a ruler to give you some scale. I found them on the farm and have ZERO history of them. I can't even ask because my Mom will want them. How sad is that?  But I don't think they belonged to us.

As I was sharing and chatting, I decided to display these instead of keeping them in a plastic bag. While walking, I remembered a small wood cabinet I had—I think I bought it at Michael's in the doll section. The big question was, did I still have it? There was a good chance it ended up in a giveaway box. 

Imagine my delight when I came home, went into the office, looked at the bookcase, and saw the little shelf. What's hilarious is that this cabinet has been on the shelf for years! I don't notice it daily, but subconsciously, I must have because I knew exactly where to look!

The scale might be a bit off, but it's close enough. So I now need to paint that cabinet and fix up some hooks and ledges, and I'll be set to add it to my tea-themed display area. I need paint! I had donated all my paints, and I'm not sure I kept any, so I must check that out. 

Here's something I noticed when I walked Lexi past the church. All of the cars are reversed into their parking spots. Was that something they learned because it's chaos to reverse out, or were they told? I always reverse park into my driveway and have for years. It's WAY safer than driving in.

And after MANY KMs (well over 1000), meaning these are way past their due date, it's time to say goodbye to these shoes. I love them - they are a Nike Trail shoe and held up very well. Do you see the toes? No breaking at all in the front toe area. I think I might get another pair of these as they are slim but still provide great comfort and room for my wide feet. The only thing I do NOT like about them is they are slippery on ceramic when wet. They are very dangerous, but I can handle that fault since they are outdoor shoes.

Today, I get to start breaking in a new pair of shoes that will be used when I return to Spain. Yep—I'm going back, and I need shoes! I'll break those out later this morning. I'm on my way to the gym for a spin class. Yes, even with the holiday, they kept the morning classes. 

And that's a wrap for today. Just so much exciting stuff happening by finishing off those small jobs that have been there for years. I am really starting to feel on top of things, which hasn't been the case for a long time, and it feels so good. But I needed to slow down before that could happen. 

Keep plugging away at that fabric stash, those drawers, the closet, or whatever area you have picked. You will NOT regret it, and soon, you'll be moving on to the next area. It is TIME-CONSUMING, but can you NOT afford to do this? Don't just think of it as gaining more physical space or having things look neat, but the boost to my MENTAL HEALTH is stunning!! I'm so glad this has become a way of life!

I can DO it!

There is NO danger of those bananas going bad. Good grief -- they were purchased four days ago, and they are still not ripe. They aren't bitter, but well, I hope tomorrow they will taste like ripe bananas. I should have just gone and bought some different ones. 

I'm happy to report that one quilt is gone. I took it to the UPS store yesterday, as I didn't dare chance sending it from the house. I had to laugh because, after almost 2 years, the owner remembered me and all the necessary paperwork details! And I got there at the right time because a line developed behind me. Phew!!

But it was not a happy day with the second quilt. I did some of it, and it didn't work, so that is all ripped out and ready to start anew today. Why? No idea -- but it was a mess, so using a different pattern today. OK -- I know why. There was a total lack of knowledge on how to work outside my comfort zone. I know that's harsh, but it is what it is. I know how to do one thing and do it well (sort of), but I have a ton of learning to do on that long arm. 

I've learned a ton from our Facebook support group. They have been most helpful, and I have another friend with a long arm who has provided advice! 

Let's hope today goes better. I'm running out of time, and I have homework to prep for the weekend, and well -- I just don't have a lot of time to fiddle, but who thought I would run into all these issues? 

To make matters worse, two other things happened yesterday that put my low blood pressure through the roof. I had a presentation last night, and when I went to open the link -- it was INVALID. Good grief -- I have 30 people waiting to attend, and it took 20 minutes to get the new link to everyone, but we did it. We started 15 minutes late, but it worked. Nothing like adding a little adrenaline rush to the day!

And then, when I was in a rush to get to the UPS store, I couldn't get into my car. I had noticed that the key fob battery was low and well -- it died! I was on the phone with Margaret at the time, and she said, "don't panic!" and she told me I could fix this myself." I found the manual key,  which opened the door, and the push-button start worked. Phew!!!!

Back home and at dinner, DH and I discussed how to get the battery changed. He, like myself, was under the impression that we had to get it done at the dealer. Nope, Margaret and Ronda both informed me that it's super easy. I took a quick peek at a YouTube video to figure out how to access the battery, and I even had a spare battery in the house! If I were keeping a gratitude jar, this would have been one for the jar.

In a matter of a minute, the battery was changed. Then DH had the gall to suggest that it wouldn't work. Seriously? Has he no faith in my tinkering abilities?? Of course, it works!  

I also think that anything that needs to be repaired should be left on the kitchen table. As DH tells me that I can't do it, I'm determined to make it work, and I get it done. Hmm -- I have a picture that needs to be switched in a frame, and I might put that on the table for tonight! 

After my little episode with the long arm, I needed to go for a walk. I also happened to be on a call with someone, and before I knew it, I had walked almost 16 KM yesterday. 

I listened to an audiobook while I ripped -- and what's the point of getting angry. Just get it fixed! 

Speaking of walking, I set an ambitious goal of 8,000 cardio miles this year, including outdoor cycling, spin class, and walking. Well, it's not quite the weather to ride outdoors, and gyms are closed, so I'm a bit behind. I also set a route on the map to give me a goal. I started in Cairo, Egypt, and I'm currently in Alexandria. The Google car has not been there, but people have posted pictures in some parts. Imagine my surprise this morning when I opened some photos to find this. 

I can relate to this -- it's a sewing store!!! Those boxes in the background are boxes of THREAD, and a cone of each color in the box is attached to the front. On the right are all sorts of trim.

Life is sure different in other countries. Look at all the garbage in the street. For them, this is normal. I suspect that's why some newcomers to our neighborhood are not up to snuff with our waste management systems. But you think they would notice and ask questions?  

Anyway -- that put a smile on my face! You just do not know what you'll find on those Google pictures. The other day, I was in an animal reserve with zebras! And there are resorts - I saw some guy cleaning the swimming pool. 

I'll get back on track, but it'll take a while to catch up. I'm 263 KM behind at this point. I'll make up some of that when I get back to the gym, and some will have to be done with outside cycling. That was the point of making this an aggressive goal. I'm losing 60 KM a week due to the gyms being closed. Sigh................

This is Morgan's space. And while that sewing/cutting area is messy, this is her current project, and honestly, we should not have to work neatly when we're actually working on something. The messier, the better!! Did you see the coloring pages on the wall under the window? How fun to look at the artwork.

This secondary cutting area is a bit messy and ACK -- there's a cup of coffee sitting there. This doesn't get used much - good thing, there's no room! I believe she is waiting for a new steam press to tidy up some of the projects in this area.

There's her pressing area on the left-hand side. I believe this was a cabinet made by her grandfather, and it's a fantastic place to store fabric! I've seen it with the doors open! The easel is great for a mini design board beside the sewing machine! The dark grey boxes in that little cabinet are for storing current projects. If she needs to switch projects, the current project goes in one of those bins. What a super idea -- I really need to cut down the number of current projects to have something neat like this. Much easier to focus on as well. And her rulers are attached to the side of her table.

Lately, there have been many days when I wish my sewing room looked like this. There is enough stuff to keep one busy and well-equipped, but not a lot to deal with. The amount of time I have "wasted" managing my stuff would probably boggle my mind, and I do not want to go there. 

At the rate I'm emptying Pandora's Closet (imagine someone's surprise to find my blog when they search for that in the future!), I'll be able to take stuff from the current project table and put it in the closet. That would be amazing and make that space much neater. 

When I first saw this picture, I had to laugh! I thought she had a box of candies under her acrylic table. Nope -- that is a cute little heart-shaped box that she's had since she was a child, and it's filled with colorful bobbins!!! DRAT -- I wanted candies! It's a two-tier box that swivels open.

But this is an excellent place to store those filled bobbins if you don't have a second spool holder! 

WOW -- we've got some super amazing ideas from others!! I hope you've found something that intrigued you to make some changes in your sewing space. Have you started making lists? Hopefully, everyone has had a chance to do some tidying, and what about those dead pens? Are they gone?

The other day DH and I were chatting about why are we working so hard? I know I'll feel a whole lot better once this second quilt is in the mail, but lately? I'm seriously questioning why I'm doing all this! I love it, but do I need to do it? Sigh................   I'm praying to the quilting gods this morning that the quilting will go right on this next quilt. I must say that I feel very insecure right now! And that never happens. I'll get over it! I just need this quilt out the door. 

While eating dinner last night, I went shopping with Murphy and Lexi in mind. I think I have found what I need and I have a carpenter in mind to finish the job. DH thinks I've lost it! Yes -- there is always lots happening at the dinner table at our house! You have to wait to see that project come together. 

On that note, I'm out of here! It's another busy day.

Who are you going to call?

 Here's a question to ponder this morning. When you need to fix something - who are you going to call? 

Should you call the appliance repair people? Should you call a handyman? Or should you Google it? 

As you know, I got an F11 error on my dishwasher a while back. And no, I didn't have time to deal with it and was perfectly happy (not really) to handwash everything. I had Googled the error message and knew that there was a blockage in the draining system. The one video I watched was bizarre, and the guy was showing some sort of valve thing ON the kitchen counter. Well, I don't know about you, but I don't have such a thing. He also showed another part that could be the culprit. 

Back to Google, where I found a different video showing that same part and how to remove it. So I did, although I had to go back to Google several times before I figured it out. It's a very tight squeeze. AHA -- a tiny piece of onion skin caught in the ball bearing, causing the drain to not work properly. But I was suspicious. Could it be that tiny little piece of onion that caused my problem? 

I had to Google several times on how to snap that part back in place. It was an even tighter squeeze to get it back, and god forbid if the drain thing didn't work properly. OK - everything is back in place. Still have the error message. I turned off the dishwasher - YES - I know - I probably should have done that first! 

But I'm happy to report that the error was gone, and I loaded the dishwasher and ran it during the day! GASP!! We never do that due to the higher electricity charges. But it worked!! It drained just fine. The dishes were clean, and I'm a happy camper. 

Now, if the repair were a bit more involved? I'd be inclined to hire someone to do it for me. 

It was super exciting to get back to the gym. I arrived about 5:10 AM, and there were already about a dozen cars in the parking lot. It opened at 5:00. I bet there was a small line-up so they could get in right when it opened. 

But what I love is that most people park as close to the door as they possibly can, which is hilarious when you think that you're at the gym - to WORK OUT, so a few extra steps isn't a big deal. See my PAPRIKA car in the distance? Yep -- I'm always in need of more steps in a day, so I always park far away.

And what's with the white, grey, black cars. Those are so boring! Yep -- I'd pay extra to get a color. It's super easy to find my car in a parking lot, except that I'm blocked by most cars because of their size, so I can't find mine because it's little. Who needs a HUGE vehicle in the city anyway? Who can AFFORD to drive a huge vehicle? 

The place was pretty dead - well, it's a HUGE gym, so a handful of people will not fill it. I had the entire locker room to myself, and half of the lockers are blocked off, including my favorite one! But I survived that small detail.

I walked on the treadmill (yep- I could have done that outside), but I also spent some time stretching, and you know what? My leg/knee felt much better for the rest of the day. Not perfect, but much better, so it was worth it to go. 

But look at that sky. When I left the gym, the sun was BLOOD RED - the color did NOT translate to this photo at all. There's so much smoke in the sky that it's looking pretty gloomy out there!

We had a great time with Monday sewing. Always great to get together with friends and sew. I was trying to clean up some small things on the cutting table and need to be done. 

I had grabbed some scraps so I could make another "art" background in color. Of course, I picked orange. Here are the pieces sort of laid out.

And here's the final piece. I think it needs to be a bit wider, so I might add something to it. I'll have to contemplate that, or I might simply cut part of the top off. But one more background is done. I have NOT forgotten this project - it's just that there are other things more pressing. Just wait until August!

I finished off this key wristlet. It had been sitting here for years, and now it's done.

One side has some decorative stitches that you can add crystals to, so I dug out the Hot Fix Tool, found some crystals, and fused them in place.

I put a piece of Decor-Bond inside to give it stability. And as I dug out my bag of scraps, I found a piece that was pretty much the exact size! That's why we keep scraps!

I also got the label put in this small piece. I had put the binding on but had forgotten to insert the label. Now it's done.

It's those little jobs that take up a lot of time! But I'm getting to the end of them (or so I think!). In the future - start a small job, finish a small job! 

So we've had a lot of rain and a lot of heavy rains. One section of the path in the forest is taking a beating. I notice they've been in there working, but they don't seem to be doing a good job. As a matter of fact, it's worse than it's ever been. So bad that they now have barriers on part of it. Why not just pave this small section as the sand and gravel they have added aren't doing a thing to stop the erosion. Unless they bring in a packer to pack it all in place. You can't just lay gravel and expect it to stay on a hill.

I did NOT get a quilt quilted yesterday. I needed a break! But the next one is loaded and ready for today. Here's one of the customer quilts I did last week.

Due to the number of mosquitos in the forest, Lexi and I don't spend our entire walk in the forest. That dog needs to sniff EVERYTHING. I swear it's the same dog, different tree, but she's not smart enough (Sorry, Lexi) to figure that out. And what's with this? She insists on brushing up and even into the grasses in front of a townhouse complex that we pass. Silly girl!

And those girls are so motivated to play together when Mom is outside. They have the entire house and backyard in which to play, but NO, they need to play underneath the table where I was sitting. Why? And they look and sound so ferocious. I don't know how many times they banged their heads and feet on the table.

It's like they feel compelled to entertain me. 

Well, it's going to be a busy day - I have three classes this weekend that I need to prepare for. And then there's the virtual retreat on Saturday and Sunday!!! Be sure to stop by for that. Those events are backward - it would be better to have the virtual retreat to prep for the classes! No worries - I have the stuff for one of the classes cut out and ready to sew later today; I've got two quilts to try and quilt today and some writing. Plus TWO appointments, so no time for lollygagging today!!!
