A gaggle of half-square triangles

I had a great day yesterday. The pain had pretty much disappeared in the morning, and I buzzed around all day and accomplished a lot. I even "gloated," to which DH said I was a fool!

And he was right! I went to bed pain-free, and I woke up a couple of hours later in agony. So now I'm frustrated and exhausted, and we just won't go there.

I will host my two Zooms this morning, and then I think I'll take another magic pill and sleep this afternoon. I do NOT care how it wrecks my sleep patterns. Trust me - I think I tried every chair in our house, including a sewing chair, but I couldn't fall asleep. I tried multiple positions - leg up, leg down, face down, flat on my back, and everything in between. Nothing provides relief except standing.

I feel "cheated." What's the first thing we do when we don't feel well? We lie down! I haven't been afforded that luxury. I've obviously done something terrible, and I'm being "punished!" Oh, how the mind wonders when one is exhausted.

I will make this short and sweet, as sitting is very uncomfortable this morning. Why is the bed such a villain?

I'm just finishing off that Storage magazine from Spring 2015. Imagine my surprise when I spotted this little gadget. Doesn't it remind you of something? Yes, someone discovered it in the quilt world!!!

An organizer for makeup - in 2015!

You can buy them online, and I've seen many of them in local quilt shops. The price in the magazine, which would have been US$, was $15. This is NOT the first time we've seen everyday gadgets resurface geared specifically to quilters!

I finished a customer quilt. The tension was fine once I changed the bobbin (I just had a gut feeling that it was worn out). I'll try to trim it today.

Customer quilt - DONE

Then, during the Virtual Retreat last night, I completed ALL this month's homework for Spice Market. Let's say that we had to make MANY half-square triangles.

44 HSTs

And more of these little devils.

Another 44 HSTs

These four patches are a bit larger than the previous ones. But more HSTs.

12 HSTs

And then there was this unit, and what's in there? Yep—more HSTs. While there are 45 HSTs in this piece, we actually made 50.

MORE HSTs

And the final block was this, and yes -- those are HSTs.

40 MORE HSTs

By my math, that's a total of 185 HSTs. It's probably a good idea that I didn't tell the class the total count—they would have rebelled!

Here's another blast from the quilt magazine past. I was searching my desktop for a letter that I need tomorrow morning. Do you think I could find it? Why wasn't it in that SAFE place? Well, when I calmed down and searched properly, it had got tucked in a fold of something else, but it was exactly where it was supposed to be.

But while searching for the letter, I spotted this. Remember Marketplace sections in magazines? They called them Quilt Classified. Oh my—I see Hoffman was selling NO-REPEAT charm packs—Jinny Beyer! That was before these things became a staple in the quilt world. $19.50 US for 100 charms.

Quilt Classified

Why did they become so popular? I believe the origin was that many quilters swapped 5" squares of fabric to make scrappy quilts. Authentic scrappy quilts did NOT repeat a fabric, so this was an easy way to get more variety.

That was from about 2001. And look at this ad! Paper Pieces!!! Yes, they are still around and selling with a vengeance. However, in this ad, they mention paper pieces, whereas today, they shout English Paper Piecing.

Paper Pieces is still around

That's it for me today. There will be a Virtual Retreat, and I hope to be there, but I cannot guarantee it! At most, those pain pills last for about five hours, so that's all the sleep I'm going to get. I have no idea why the pain disappeared so quickly yesterday but then came back with a vengeance? How will I resolve this quickly? I don't have time to be unfocused!

OH -- if you want to watch my video on binding, here's the link.

  1. Elaine, have you tried using Voltaren or A535 rub? Sometimes the cream does a good jobs on the muscle. There is also Kalaya cream, available at WalMart. It is pricey but does an amazing job in pain relief.
