Anniversary Dinner

Wow - I have been up for over FOUR hours and I have basically got NOTHING done. OK - I did walk the dogs, went to physio, drove DH to the airport, had breakfast, but NOTHING concrete done. Here I am finally sitting in front of the computer.

One of the guilds I belong to - the Halton Hills Quilter's Guild (Georgetown) Dinner celebrated its 20th anniversary this year (OK - this is the tail end of the year). Anyway - the past president (Judy) suggested we have a dinner to celebrate the event. And somehow my hand went up when she was looking for ideas for speakers/venues. It evolved into a HUGE affair which took place this past Monday night.

Jeanne Large and Shelley Wicks of The Quilt Patch fame were invited as guest speakers. Great - I am trying to insert their link here and SOMETHING ELSE has changed on Google Chrome - some STUPID STUPID STUPID security thing. Now to figure out how to get rid of that. Honestly - I am TIRED of all this crud. People need to leave things alone - I waste so much time trying to get things like that figured out.

OK - breath deep THREE times. Ah - I feel better. Still don't have the link - but I feel better.

As Oprah would say - GO BIG or go home, so I decided that we could host 150 people at the dinner. I know - what was I thinking?????   I sold tickets to our guild and other local guilds, friends and whoever would purchase a ticket. We were basically sold out - I think I had two tickets left!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

The dinner was a resounding success. I choose a small banquet hall in Mississauga (Fuzion Banquets) and they were SO ACCOMMODATING. A few small things that I will suggest to them to improve, but I was happy.

Jeanne and Shelley have published TWO books - Tis The Season which is in its 6th printing (almost UNHEARD of in the quilting business) and although the book was published a couple of years ago - it is STILL the NUMBER ONE seller for Martingale. How about that for a couple of CANADIAN designers!!!!!!!  Book two - Urban Country Quilts was published a year later and it is also selling well. Book three will be out in the Spring of 2014 and the contract for Book 4 has been signed.

These girls are just a bundle of fun and a whirlwind. Most of the patterns they sell in their store are their own design!   Can you believe that??????   Yep - their own patterns only.



Daphne and Marian did an amazing job with swag bags and door prizes. Everyone walked away with a nice swag bag filled with loot of all kinds. We had donated fabric, patterns, bags, coupons, magazines, needle cases, muffin tins, and MUCH MUCH more. Then there were almost 50 door prizes. I know - -everyone had a 1 in 3 chance of winning something and you know what - no one at our table of 10 won a thing!!!!!!!!!!   Sorry girls - just luck of the draw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People asked when the next event was going to take place. Oh boy - but wouldn't it be fun to have ONE big dinner party a year for quilters with a guest speaker. How cool would that be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    Of course it wouldn't be as inexpensive as this was. Anybody got any ideas for guest speakers??????


On that note - I think I need a small nap. I am still recovering from the event. I will tell you about the workshop later or most likely tomorrow. I am suddenly EXHAUSTED and I can't think straight enough to put the rest of the information and pictures.

The BIG event

Well I have nothing to report today - just more cutting and pressing, sewing and pressing - I have pressed so much I know what it would be like to work in a laundry all day!!!!!    But good progress is being made and I must admit that I am kind of liking it. Why? Well I am using up gobs of fabric - it is mindless and it is relaxing.

Soon to be time to move to the next stage which hopefully will go faster than this stage!!!!!

Anyway - I have spent some time with these girls and let's say there is NEVER A DULL MOMENT. 

There is a workshop with Jeanne and Shelley the next day (we are doing the quilt on the cover of the Tis The Season book). I have a few details to work out, but again guild members get first chance at those spots (there are 40). But if you would like to get your name on the list for the workshop - let me know. Kits will also be available if you would like. 

OK - so that is the BIG news. I am very very excited about it. I LOVE LOVE LOVE organizing things like this. I know - I am totally crazy.

Last call!

The Halton Hills Quilt Guild is celebrating their 20th Anniversary and we are CELEBRATING in a BIG WAY.

We have planned a buffet dinner and two AMAZING speakers. Jeanne Large and Shelley Wicks. Don't know them? Well they are the authors of TWO books............

The first book called 'Tis the Season, Quilts and Other Comforts was released in July 2010. It was a smash hit and has gone into several reprintings................

CREATIVFESTIVAL

Yes - it CreativFestival time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    Yesterday was set up day. My "favourite" day of the whole thing. I didn't take pictures, but you arrive at a blank booth - concrete floor surrounded by white curtains. Unload the boxes, set up the tables and 6 hours later (with FIVE people) and VOILA - you have a booth ready!!!!

For some reason, my feet were bothering me yesterday. I HAD to take a walk around to loosen them up. OH BOY - I had better leave the credit card at home. There are so many nice things. I don't need any of them, but I already found a beautiful bicycle pendant handmade from ceramic. They seem to have some ready made items in two of the isles. Not every one was set up when I left so I have no idea what else is there, but these ceramic pendants - well she had ALL kinds of designs and they were nice.

M and I trundled our way down to the Convention Center. Yes M - I got her a Silver Pass for the weekend and she is taking classes - I think two every day but Saturday. We are going to all the big events - the gala evening - the fashion shows. Well I am going to everything that I can as a "vendor". She gets VIP treatment - I get to sit in the back!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Where is the justice in that??????   I did pay for the darn ticket!!!

She really enjoyed the two classes on pattern fitting/sewing that she took yesterday. MY KID!!!!!    Isn't that cool!!!!   Today she has some free time to wander the floor - see - that is why I have to leave my credit card at home!!!!

There are MANY MANY displays to look at as well. It is the 25th Anniversary of the CreativFestival and there are TONS and TONS of displays to see. The crochet gang are back, the Textile Museum is there, a design challenge celebrating the 25th anniversary year - that you get to vote on, a display of AMAZING cakes (remember this is the CREATIVE FESTIVAL) (NOT a needlework festival), although there are plenty of all things creative.

Isn't that cool?????      I will try to get some detail shots of it this morning before people come in - I should have yesterday before the ropes went up. DARN - it was hot in that hall and my brain was fuzzed!!!!   No I was helping Jeanne and Shelley - not taking pictures!!!!!!!!!


M has to be there early today - she at 9 and me at 10, so I am going to wonder the floor and maybe take some more pictures this morning. It is hard to take some pictures because of "publishing" issues.

Saw my friends Jeanne and Shelley from The Quilt Patch in Moose Jaw. Oh boy - they have some new designs for Christmas. Cute simple and WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT???????????    Maybe I will get another "trophy" to put on my mantel!!!!!    They are in the 700 aisle - if you are coming to the show - stop by and say hi. If you are NOT - then we will see you at our dinner with Jeanne and Shelley on Monday.


And I will be in booth 531 - Sew Fancy. We have tons of stuff - quilting fabrics, laminate fabrics, lots and lots of embroidery patterns, threads - both practical and fancy. Loads of Valdani threads, books about everything - tatting, embroidery stitches, quilting, fibre art, locker hooking, and MUCH MUCH more.

Progress AT LAST.................................

The sun was NOT shining so sitting in the living room enjoying the warmth would not be calling me, I had NO novels on the go, so that could not be calling me either. Hey - I actually got some work done!!!!!    Yeah!!!!!


Where do I start?????   Oh yes - with the quilts of course.

OK - THIS is one that has been on the shelf for a LONG LONG LONG time. Our guild got involved with a couple of teen groups at one of the local high schools (through our community work). Anyway - the teens were learning to embroider and made these blocks. I got all excited MANY MANY MANY years ago and said I would make them up into kids quilts. This top (and backing and binding) were made a long time ago and sitting in the pile to quilt. Well it got moved into the work for January, but got done in February which is NOT bad. 

Just some simple quilting, but it is cute. 

Got the binding on by machine on one side. Then I let someone else in the guild do the binding. Hey - I've done a LOT already. 

There are MORE blocks - I just dug them out  - I think there are enough for five or six more of these little quilts. OK - INSTEAD of taking a new project from the community projects to work on each month (this month it is gift bags), my goal this year will be to finish those embroidery blocks AND three other small quilts to quilt for the guild. Yes - I CAN DO IT ALL!!!!!!!!   It really is a question of writing a list and following the list and FOCUS on finishing - NOT starting something new.

While some people are OK with making significant advances in the projects (HEY - I am OK with significant advances as well), but enough is enough. Some of these have been hanging on too long and require finishing. I personally want them done. Let's just say that so far this year - I am VERY happy with my progress. Not huge, but I can honestly say I am making a dent. A small one, but a dent!!!!!

It is fun to write them down too - who cares when I am gone, but it is neat to look back and see how much progress is being made. Now the one thing I am NOT keeping track of - are those ongoing quilts. Yes - I am doing a LOT of work on some of them, but CANNOT show you until it is time. Those students of mine will be working ahead and we can't have that. I mean they are e-mailing me and ASKING for next month's assignments already!!!!!  

Speaking of ongoing projects - I am back into Elm Creek again - Sylvia's Bridal Sampler.

Another one of my BRIGHT ideas - sign up for the postcard exchange. That means I have to make eight postcards to exchange with the others. This one came in the mail yesterday. I wonder if that smidgen of orange is for me or did it just happen that way??????    Anyway - I have my materials out to make mine - just not quite there yet. 

This is a class sample that I am trying to get done. There is a LOT of sewing here. 

BUT - I managed to get all the frames on the blocks this morning. FINALLY - this took a lot of time or maybe because I am flitting between many things. But now to cut the sashing and figure out how to sew the blocks together. It will be a surprise. 

Here is my February project - 12 for (20)12. Making decent progress on the background which is the most work, but again with all the pieces cut out - it really isn't taking that long - just sewing bits and pieces in between the framing of those other blocks. 

I had worked on this the other night which watching the video. It is called High Strung. Marian and I are working on it together. Well she is doing one and I am doing my own. I sewed all the squares together for her - she traced the applique pieces for me. How cool is that. So they are all cut out and ready to assemble. This project is from the book called "Tis The Season"

'Tis the Season by my favourite girls in Moose Jaw - Jeanne and Shelley. Did you know that this book is in its SIXTH printing. I mean that almost NEVER happens in the quilt world. Granted the runs are NOT huge, but still - SIX RUNS - IMPRESSIVE. Jeanne and Shelley are hard at work on their THIRD book and their first line of fabric - Shasta is on a slow boat from Korea we speak - should hit North American shores by the end of the month. They are hard at work on their SECOND fabric design. I think this is so exciting for us Canadians. 

 Check out their web site The Quilt Patch. I ordered that bundle of orange (oooops - SPICE) flannel FQs from them yesterday. Talked to Jeanne for a bit and she is sending me a present - OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH - I like presents. I told them to send everything EXPRESS. Anyway - it is exciting - and I'm not even part of it!!!!  

Oh yes - I plan to go back to their out door quilt show (and help hang it of course). That is in July and there is a red/white quilt display. I have a red/white quilt that just needs a bit more quilting - OH - got to move that to the ACTIVE quilting pile. Would be nice to get it done.

OK - quick as that - this quilt went from the INACTIVE pile to the MUST GET DONE pile. There is only one problem - this quilt already has the binding on and the outer borders are NOT quilted. It is minimally quilted and I want lots and lots on it. I will be able to load it on the long arm to do all but the outer border - will have to do that on the domestic machine and it is going to be a pain because there is NOTHING to hold on the edge. OH WELL - live and learn. 

And for those of you in the Toronto area - do you know why it turned cold and snowy all of a sudden?????  

Yep - it is because of ME. I decided to AT LAST reassemble my bike from my trip last year. It's been in the garage in a box - couldn't ride it because of my injury. Well - I got it partially assembled. At least it will be ready for the next nice day. 

I did a lower body workout at the gym this week - very carefully and other than some muscles that haven't been worked in a LONG time, I feel fine. My knee bothered me a bit that night, but wasn't a big deal.


Went to a Pampered Chef party a couple of weeks ago and got these great STONES for baking. I already have one, but wanted the pizza one. It is hard to cook a round pizza on a square tray!!!!!    So when M and I were baking cookies for the boyfriend - I used my new stone.

Anybody want to come to a Pampered Chef party?????   They are loads of fun and I really like their products of which I have way more than I realized!!!!    And I use them all. And I don't even cook ...........   much!!!!!



Listening to this 10-10-10 book has got me to thinking about a lot of things. Like the fact that your child is going to a semi-formal for school. I bought her a nice, black (and reasonably priced) chiffon type dress, SHE paid for the shoes because I did not agree to the MASSIVE PLATFORM AND HEELS and AQUA SUEDEness of them. Then yesterday when she is leaving - she bounds down the stairs with shoes in hand and NO PANTY HOSE. I mean - what is she thinking????????    She has this impression that she is FASHION CONSCIOUS, but what the heck???????    NEW HIGH shoes, FREEZING cold temperatures and NO PANTY HOSE.

Oh well - in the perspective of 10-10-10 - it really isn't a big deal. There are many days when I can't wait for her to move out. Then what she does - well I don't have to think about it.


Now here is something else that used to bother me and I think this is why we need to play LOTS and LOTS of board games when we are kids. I never played a lot of board games when I was a kid. But when I started to play Scrabble several years ago (on-line mostly), I was desperate to win. I HAD to win which was impossible because sometimes - you just can't win. I would look up words on my PC based Scrabble program, I would insert my letters into one of those word scrambler programs searching for that HIGH scoring word. Then I played a couple of games in real life and was HANDICAPPED - severely handicapped. I weaned myself off ALL those aids and now I just play from my brain. Yes - sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, but MOST of all, I get enormous satisfaction knowing that I played MY best. Not the computer, but me!!!!! And if I lose - well I lose - suck it up and DON'T LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN!!!!!   Just kidding - sometimes you just get the worst letters ever and you can't help it.


On that note - I have another quilt to load on the machine today and a class this afternoon and one more tomorrow. And I am behind on stuff so I had better get myself organized.

But - I FEEL GREAT. I am EXCITED - not sure about what - but I am EXCITED. Oh - more books to pick up at the library????

Day 20 - Craik to Regina

What can I say - we did another 125 K today. That is a total of 700  K in the last five days. Now I grew up in the prairies and I know what they are like, but today was BORING!!!!!!!!

Just more of the divided highway. More wide shoulders that became narrow shoulders and then became wide and then became narrow and then wide - well you get the picture!!!!!!


My brain and my butt were NUMB after the end of the day!

I only took TWO pictures.

I aired out my tent and sleeping bag when we arrived at camp after we took the scenic route through Regina to get to our camp site. I also cleaned my bike and did the laundry. Tomorrow is a rest day, but I am NOT staying in camp!!!!!


Jeanne and Jim were picking me up!!!!!!!   You know Jeanne from The Quilt Patch in Moose Jaw and I met Jim on Tour Pacific a couple of years ago. They are just the most hospitable people in the world. After we had a great dinner at a local restaurant, we zoomed out to their house where we sat around for a couple of hours chatting over a glass of wine.

And I got to sleep in a REAL BED!!!!!!!   Not that I missed sleeping in a real bed, but it was nice to not be in a campground!!!!!!!

A PLAY DAY!!!!!

I had yesterday booked off as a play day!!  However my original plans fell through so I went to Plan B.

I picked up Jeanne, Shelley and Marian and we were off on an adventure!  And what an adventure. We compared notes, we laughed, we chatted, we drove everywhere and just had a SUPER SUPER day.

I know - you want to know what we did?????

Well.............................   you just had to be there!!!!   But here are a few pictures to show that we actually were out and about.

We did make a pit stop at The Quilting Bee (one of my favourite booths from the CreativFestival). Remember I told you they were moving? November 1 or thereabouts - grand re-opening on November 26???   Remember that????   Well - you MUST MUST MUST mark November 26 on your calendar. We got a sneak peek at the new space. I think they probably mopped the floor after we left. We were all drooling at the idea of the store in that GORGEOUS space. Two beautiful balconies running the length of the store, amazing storage area, classroom - well it is going to be GREAT GREAT GREAT!!!!!!!!    I cannot wait to see the new place. The store is in Fonthill and if have never been there - you should plan to go. If you are familiar with the store - they are moving to the BACK of the same building. Looking at the building - go left around the corner.

I also managed to get some fabric that I had been looking for. Remember those strips I was cutting a while back - of course you don't remember. Let me remind you!!!!

OK - so do you know now????   Yep - we went to Niagara Falls. It is such a spectacular place. I just love going and while we were there - we saw this beautiful rainbow.

It is a shame that none of the information that used to be in the main building is there anymore. OH - it is there, but now you have to pay to get access to it. There is a show or lecture or something. That is such a shame and just a money grab. They could give you some FREE information.

It was a FUN FUN FUN day and I really really really needed it. Thanks Jeanne, Shelly and Marian!!!!!!

It had started to rain late in the afternoon and getting from Niagara on the Lake back to downtown was a pain and then back through the traffic was equally bad. But I had the radio and I was relaxed (not THAT relaxed - I was responsible!!!!!). I made it home at 8 PM!!!!!!    Needless to say, I did take out for dinner and went to bed early!!!!!


Today - well that is another day. Back to reality. I did get some more done on Dragon Star this morning.

Current status of Dragon Star

Now I am off to the doctor to arrange for the MRI and taking M to arrange for an X-ray. Poor thing fell off her bike on the weekend and has bruised/cracked a rib(s). Ah - there is never a DULL moment in this house!!!!
