Do NOT read e-mail BEFORE you go to bed!!!!

Yesterday was the same crazy day that all days are. I taught a class (Miranda Bag) - it was part one and they all got homework and in two weeks - hopefully we will be putting the bags together. Let's just say that it is different to teach sewers versus quilters. Especially when it comes to cutting.

Then back home to finish up a customer quilt.

Another quilt DONE!!!!!

Drop M off at her drawing class and then I bundle myself off to a small quilting group that meets once a month. Even had to buy dinner on the way and eat it while we chatted. Then back in the car - pick up M from her class and arrive home.

Ah - things are calm - things are quiet. I have NO appointments for the next day (today), however I have LOTS to do.

Then I read e-mail and BANG - my whole day goes to he##. The editor of the magazine wants a picture of a project that I am working on which is supposed to be done by the end of March. You know me - I have started, but nothing is sewn together. NOPE - the editor wants a picture of part of the project as a preview. CRAP - so guess what that means - I have to try to put together part of the project which I do NOT want to do. But I will get a small portion together and pray that I don't have to rip any of it out. You will see what I mean when I get the project completed.


I get asked often - How do you twirl the seams on the back to reduce the bulk???   Here is a tutorial for you. Hopefully that will make it easier to understand.

One of the first things - I cannot stress enough - find your 1/4" scant seam allowance. Keep the seam allowance consistent AND watch your stitch length - don't make it too big. Also NO need to reverse at the beginning and end of each seam. OK - let's look at how to twirl the seams.

The arrow is pointing to the vertical seam allowance that is ABOVE the horizontal seam allowance. 

Take your seam ripper (a GOOD seam ripper) and just pull out the stitches on BOTH sides of that small part. No need to cut that loose thread off. 

See the stitches pulled out (sorry - had to find a different block  - the original one did not focus properly)

Then split the seam allowance - the right one goes in the opposite direction of the left one

If you make four patches and twirl the seam and keep consistent with your pressing,

You can do entire quilts like this

I am making great progress on the safari quilt. I looked at the list of the projects for 12 for (20)12. OH MY GO - they all seem HUGE.


Anyway - I had best go because not only do I have to come up with some part of a quilt for the photograph, but I have to prepare for my classes on Saturday. And stay tuned because I have a GREAT tutorial for you on Y seams. Because YES - I finished yet another block for Elm Creek.

Obviously the English language escapes me sometimes. The fasteners I talk about in the next post are in fact called fascinators. Duh! I knew that, but fasteners isn't even close to fascinators. Thanks to carol for the quick heads up.

I LOVE MONDAYS!!!!

I feel extremely lucky to spend the day surrounded by some pretty CRAZY ladies. The mix every week is a bit different because not every one can make Monday and there is not room for everyone to come at the same time. Surprisingly, everyone gets along pretty well. And the STORIES - oh my - the stories. If for every belly laugh you add a month to your life - I am going to live a LONG LONG life.

Thank you Monday Motivators - you are the BEST. Oh yes - I will NEVER repeat those stories - some of them are too wild anyway!!!!    And it was so nice to see Barb after a very LENGTHY recuperation from her broken shoulder/arm. Welcome back Barb - hope to see you more frequently now that you are on the mend.


But I will share this you from last week. Took a camera yesterday, but NO CARD. There were some pretty cool projects being worked on and let's not forget the NANAIMO bars made by Margo who is the queen of NANAIMO bars. They are so good - not that I need them, but YUM YUM YUM - thanks so much Margo.


Diane got remarried a couple of weeks ago and we had a small shower for her last week. Here are a couple of pictures of the event.

 Well our Monday group is pretty sophisticated. Everyone or almost everyone has a fastener. And we wear them with pride whenever an event calls for a hat!!!!!!

And this is Robbie. He is ADORABLE. Diane is his grandma!!!!   I just love him and we hadn't seen him a month. Oh my goodness, but he has changed. He is a cute little boy now - no more baby!!!!!

I wore the fastener all day and a few customer gave me a questioning look. Nope - just a new style. Work in a quilt store - wear a fastener. High class!!!!!!!

Speaking of CAKE - look at what Margo was making. A YUMMY looking cake - well actually it is a tea cozy shaped like a cake. Nicely done.

But I did get back to Elm Creek. OH MY GOD - these blocks are fiddly.

Look at these PIECES of the block. There are FOUR of these sections and EACH section has THREE Y seams. I mean really - this is slow going. However I am THRILLED at how nicely it all went together. Just a smidgen off - well I just trimmed the small bits and now it is perfect. I have parts of the other two sections together. Will try to finish that off tonight. Then I better get my act together and STOP working on the December assignment and get the February assignment done. I LOVE LOVE LOVE doing these tiny little bits. I know - I am insane - oh yes - did I tell you those little squares are TWO and ONE HALF inches. Tiny. I wish I could transfer my skills to others - I can provide the theory, but others struggle with these seams. Hmmmmmm - how could I better help them put these blocks together????

Did manage to find a nice fabric for the binding of those two wall hangings. And NO matter how much I calculated, there just was not enough fabric to make even one binding - so I bought enough of the blue to make both. 

As usual it is going to be a busy day - got a class to teach this morning and then a quilt to quilt this afternoon.

To answer a couple of comments - the doll in the Elm Creek quilt - well it got stuck there when someone was over and we needed more space on the wall. I just haven't moved the doll out of the picture!!!!    And the MK bag - I LOVE it. I am still very cautious - afraid that it will get a salt stain or scratch mark, but I am LOVING it and USING it. Thanks for asking!!!!!!


And for those that have asked for more applique demos - shoot - I was doing fusible this morning and forgot to take pictures. I will try for the Fusible demo tomorrow and then the inside points of the starch method.

Back to Work!!!!

Oh dear - on top of all that excitement yesterday with iTunes, now Blogger has a new interface. HELP - just relax - it will be OK. But all this new stuff - yikes.

By the way - I did manage to get everything transferred to the iPad. I think!!!!!!

Another class yesterday. Exciting stuff and this class - the sample was actually quilted and the binding on, but not stitched down. How did that happen?????

I am getting back to work and have some stuff to show you this morning.

The tops are DONE!!!!    I noticed after I got the last border on that I made the  second to last border slightly larger than on the original one. No big deal. 

The backing for the two wall hangings. I do NOT have enough of the border fabric for the binding - well I might be able to squeeze one binding out of what is left, and I forgot to shop for some new binding yesterday. Yes - if I looked in the stash, I would likely find something, but it is fun to shop and this is a small piece to buy!!!!

Speaking of buying - I was reading an article in an older "O" magazine (trying to read different style articles for comparing writing styles in my class). The author, Martha Beck talks about THREE STEPS that we can use to cut down on shopping. Psych - Step One - Think Abundantly - She refers to us assembling all our "like" stuff in one place - when you feel like you need to buy something - you check out what you already have. And ultimately you should be able to meet your needs by "shopping" in your own stuff be that clothes or fabric or toiletries or whatever.


I couldn't agree more - this is EXACTLY what I have found - even though I did NOT read this article until yesterday. I have like things together and now it is really really obvious what I have and what I need and do not need.


Step Two - she talks about the effect the stores have on us - how we get "hynotized" into buying things. Oh yeah - I would agree with that.

Step Three - Practice Moderation - this means - yes you can still buy things, but in MODERATION.


Which is why I am going to buy 10 inches of fabric to make the binding for the one quilt top and I am going to SQUEEZE enough binding out of the leftovers of the border to make the other binding.

My February project. Yes I am making progress - 2/5 of it is completely together. 

Time to get ready for the classes this coming weekend. Got out my big roll of paper and started cutting.

Made the pattern (paper pieced) in EQ7 and the printer started spewing out the sheets. Oh God - look at that mess. 

That was a LOT of patterns to print. 

I cut up some of the leftovers for scrap - look at how quickly the stuff I cut a month ago has yellowed.

I know it is a small thing, but I am VERY EXCITED that I could come up with this solution - the paper and the printer and the pattern. Sure makes sewing this together a LOT easier than the original pattern. I hope the students think so too.

DH's grandmother died last week and last night that brought on a conversation on what to do when we die. We are of different religions and there could be issues. I had sort of thought about it - but never really did - and now I know exactly what I want. I really really MUST get that organized.

Oh yes - the new interface - I LIKE it much better than the old one. Just have to figure out where all the stuff is, but it is pretty intuitive.

iPad OVERLOAD

I NEVER go into iTunes. I am too cheap to buy stuff and I already have too much stuff to read, to listen to, etc. etc.

Last night I was listening to an audio-book on CD. One of the CDs was badly scratched and no way could I listen to it. I thought I would check to see if my library had the same book as an audio-book. Well for some reason (already got a question into my friend who is a librarian at my library) why when you go into the Overdrive electronic library on you iPad and the electronic library through the main library site - they appear to be TWO different databases. Now - that could be me, but it might be true?????

I did find the book I wanted - it comes in audio, but I cannot download it to my iPad. The format isn't right. However, I decided that I need to download another book to test - then the software isn't updated - so update that, Oh - I can update this software. Oh I have to go into iTunes to sync the iPad. Oh - look at all these FREE things in iTunes that I can download. So the iPad is having a GORGE fest right now as I am downloading dozens of free audio podcasts, video podcasts, free episodes of programs on TV (OH OH - don't worry there were only a few that were interesting and NOT MUCH FREE) and subscribing to free things. I don't know that I am going to like them, but they are FREE FREE FREE.

Holy cow - it is easy to get carried away with all this FREE stuff. The system might be caught up with the downloads by lunch!!!!!

Perhaps it is time to let the audio CDs go into the age of the dinosaur, HOWEVER - you are MORE likely to get what you want in CDs than on-line. While there are quite a few titles available, almost all have wait lists. Now I could wait as I do with the hard copies, just have to manage those lists so you get the right books at the right time - well the right order. OK - just another process that I have to learn to manage so it fits in my time schedule.


OK - enough of that!!!!    Let's get back to quilting.

Had a GREAT class on machine applique yesterday. Nine people in the class which made for a lively environment. I think everyone went home happy - at the very least - they all learned something in the day and that is what it is all about - learning.

Now here is a thought for you - so last night we all learned that Whitney Houston died. She was FORTY EIGHT. Forty eight is just too young to die. While we don't know where or how she died (well I haven't checked this AM for those details), there were LOTS of inferences to her problems with drugs. Now this is strictly MY OPINION, but have you ever wondered why people turn to drugs. I think they are BORED. They have so much money or time on their hands that they turn to drugs to get MORE - more experience from life, more excitement from life. A BREAK from the boredom of having everything and nothing to do with their time. My solution - all those Hollywood types - need to learn how to quilt!!!!!    BORED - that doesn't exist in my vocabulary. Of course - popping a few pills before quilting a quilt????   Nah - I don't think so.


Anyway - it is just sad that so many people have NOTHING to do with their life.


I don't seem to be getting much done these days. Oh dear - I have blocks to do, LOTS and LOTS of blocks. I am just taking a creative break in the evenings. But I am working on lots - just not getting anything too close to completion. Time to refocus and get ONE thing done. I did manage to get one more border on this quilt. I'll show you it tomorrow.


I will have to post pictures later. The computer is STRUGGLING to keep up with downloading podcasts and pictures at the same time. Perhaps I will let it be and go do some sewing while it downloads everything. Otherwise - it might crash!!!!!

Progress AT LAST.................................

The sun was NOT shining so sitting in the living room enjoying the warmth would not be calling me, I had NO novels on the go, so that could not be calling me either. Hey - I actually got some work done!!!!!    Yeah!!!!!


Where do I start?????   Oh yes - with the quilts of course.

OK - THIS is one that has been on the shelf for a LONG LONG LONG time. Our guild got involved with a couple of teen groups at one of the local high schools (through our community work). Anyway - the teens were learning to embroider and made these blocks. I got all excited MANY MANY MANY years ago and said I would make them up into kids quilts. This top (and backing and binding) were made a long time ago and sitting in the pile to quilt. Well it got moved into the work for January, but got done in February which is NOT bad. 

Just some simple quilting, but it is cute. 

Got the binding on by machine on one side. Then I let someone else in the guild do the binding. Hey - I've done a LOT already. 

There are MORE blocks - I just dug them out  - I think there are enough for five or six more of these little quilts. OK - INSTEAD of taking a new project from the community projects to work on each month (this month it is gift bags), my goal this year will be to finish those embroidery blocks AND three other small quilts to quilt for the guild. Yes - I CAN DO IT ALL!!!!!!!!   It really is a question of writing a list and following the list and FOCUS on finishing - NOT starting something new.

While some people are OK with making significant advances in the projects (HEY - I am OK with significant advances as well), but enough is enough. Some of these have been hanging on too long and require finishing. I personally want them done. Let's just say that so far this year - I am VERY happy with my progress. Not huge, but I can honestly say I am making a dent. A small one, but a dent!!!!!

It is fun to write them down too - who cares when I am gone, but it is neat to look back and see how much progress is being made. Now the one thing I am NOT keeping track of - are those ongoing quilts. Yes - I am doing a LOT of work on some of them, but CANNOT show you until it is time. Those students of mine will be working ahead and we can't have that. I mean they are e-mailing me and ASKING for next month's assignments already!!!!!

Another one of my BRIGHT ideas - sign up for the postcard exchange. That means I have to make eight postcards to exchange with the others. This one came in the mail yesterday. I wonder if that smidgen of orange is for me or did it just happen that way??????    Anyway - I have my materials out to make mine - just not quite there yet. 

This is a class sample that I am trying to get done. There is a LOT of sewing here. 

BUT - I managed to get all the frames on the blocks this morning. FINALLY - this took a lot of time or maybe because I am flitting between many things. But now to cut the sashing and figure out how to sew the blocks together. It will be a surprise. 

Here is my February project - 12 for (20)12. Making decent progress on the background which is the most work, but again with all the pieces cut out - it really isn't taking that long - just sewing bits and pieces in between the framing of those other blocks. 

I had worked on this the other night which watching the video. It is called High Strung. Marian and I are working on it together. Well she is doing one and I am doing my own. I sewed all the squares together for her - she traced the applique pieces for me. How cool is that. So they are all cut out and ready to assemble. This project is from the book called "Tis The Season"

'Tis the Season by my favourite girls in Moose Jaw - Jeanne and Shelley. Did you know that this book is in its SIXTH printing. I mean that almost NEVER happens in the quilt world. Granted the runs are NOT huge, but still - SIX RUNS - IMPRESSIVE. Jeanne and Shelley are hard at work on their THIRD book and their first line of fabric - Shasta is on a slow boat from Korea we speak - should hit North American shores by the end of the month. They are hard at work on their SECOND fabric design. I think this is so exciting for us Canadians. 

 Check out their web site The Quilt Patch. I ordered that bundle of orange (oooops - SPICE) flannel FQs from them yesterday. Talked to Jeanne for a bit and she is sending me a present - OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH - I like presents. I told them to send everything EXPRESS. Anyway - it is exciting - and I'm not even part of it!!!!  

Oh yes - I plan to go back to their out door quilt show (and help hang it of course). That is in July and there is a red/white quilt display. I have a red/white quilt that just needs a bit more quilting - OH - got to move that to the ACTIVE quilting pile. Would be nice to get it done.

OK - quick as that - this quilt went from the INACTIVE pile to the MUST GET DONE pile. There is only one problem - this quilt already has the binding on and the outer borders are NOT quilted. It is minimally quilted and I want lots and lots on it. I will be able to load it on the long arm to do all but the outer border - will have to do that on the domestic machine and it is going to be a pain because there is NOTHING to hold on the edge. OH WELL - live and learn. 

And for those of you in the Toronto area - do you know why it turned cold and snowy all of a sudden?????  

Yep - it is because of ME. I decided to AT LAST reassemble my bike from my trip last year. It's been in the garage in a box - couldn't ride it because of my injury. Well - I got it partially assembled. At least it will be ready for the next nice day. 

I did a lower body workout at the gym this week - very carefully and other than some muscles that haven't been worked in a LONG time, I feel fine. My knee bothered me a bit that night, but wasn't a big deal.


Went to a Pampered Chef party a couple of weeks ago and got these great STONES for baking. I already have one, but wanted the pizza one. It is hard to cook a round pizza on a square tray!!!!!    So when M and I were baking cookies for the boyfriend - I used my new stone.

Anybody want to come to a Pampered Chef party?????   They are loads of fun and I really like their products of which I have way more than I realized!!!!    And I use them all. And I don't even cook ...........   much!!!!!



Listening to this 10-10-10 book has got me to thinking about a lot of things. Like the fact that your child is going to a semi-formal for school. I bought her a nice, black (and reasonably priced) chiffon type dress, SHE paid for the shoes because I did not agree to the MASSIVE PLATFORM AND HEELS and AQUA SUEDEness of them. Then yesterday when she is leaving - she bounds down the stairs with shoes in hand and NO PANTY HOSE. I mean - what is she thinking????????    She has this impression that she is FASHION CONSCIOUS, but what the heck???????    NEW HIGH shoes, FREEZING cold temperatures and NO PANTY HOSE.

Oh well - in the perspective of 10-10-10 - it really isn't a big deal. There are many days when I can't wait for her to move out. Then what she does - well I don't have to think about it.


Now here is something else that used to bother me and I think this is why we need to play LOTS and LOTS of board games when we are kids. I never played a lot of board games when I was a kid. But when I started to play Scrabble several years ago (on-line mostly), I was desperate to win. I HAD to win which was impossible because sometimes - you just can't win. I would look up words on my PC based Scrabble program, I would insert my letters into one of those word scrambler programs searching for that HIGH scoring word. Then I played a couple of games in real life and was HANDICAPPED - severely handicapped. I weaned myself off ALL those aids and now I just play from my brain. Yes - sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, but MOST of all, I get enormous satisfaction knowing that I played MY best. Not the computer, but me!!!!! And if I lose - well I lose - suck it up and DON'T LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN!!!!!   Just kidding - sometimes you just get the worst letters ever and you can't help it.


On that note - I have another quilt to load on the machine today and a class this afternoon and one more tomorrow. And I am behind on stuff so I had better get myself organized.

But - I FEEL GREAT. I am EXCITED - not sure about what - but I am EXCITED. Oh - more books to pick up at the library????

PRE-EMPTED by a book!!!!

I couldn't help myself. I was reading a novel and then all of a sudden, I could NOT put the book down. So instead of checking e-mail, sewing or doing anything else that was really really important - I read my book. The worst part - when I finished that book - I started ANOTHER novel and it was a page turner as well. That makes TEN novels so far this year!!!  OK - so you want to know what I was reading??????   Neither would EVER appear on Oprah's list -

Part of a series I started to read a LONG time ago. I don't really like the main character anymore and not sure I am into this style of book either. But it was her latest and I read it only because I have invested time into the character. Will I read the next one???????   Not sure. 

A PAGE TURNER. I have read his other books - he has written books with James Patterson and it is along that style.

Note to self - NO MORE NOVELS for a while!!!!!!!  I am now reading TWO books - one is an audio-book called 10-10-10 by Suzy Welch.

Interesting concept on making decisions - basically when you have to make a decision - ask yourself - what will happen (how will I feel) in 10 minutes, 10 months and 10 years. The book is 5 CDs and just seems to go over the same thing. Well - the author shares stories about where people have applied the 10-10-10 in different situations. Not bad to listen to while stitching.

The other book is Not Buying It by Judith Levine

I showed you the cover a while back and AT LAST getting down to reading it. Alas - too late to instill this kind of behaviour for 2012 because one CANNOT start that kind of program mid-year!!!   I mean really!!!!    OK - so when I first saw the title - I am thinking - not buying anything excess - NO - the author and her partner are NOT buying anything that is NOT necessary - no movies, no restaurants, no coffees, NOTHING. Yet - and I hope they clear this up - they decide to do a renovation on their house because it isn't big enough. That part is still boggling my mind. No to a coffee, but yes to a renovation because they can't throw stuff out??????    Well I guess I need to read the entire book to see what happens.

And while I am reading this book, I am DYING to order a FQ bundle of SPICE coloured flannels. Oh - to hell with it - I am ordering the fabric today.

Yes - even though I have had my nose in a book (that obsessive behaviour - it just hits me in everything I do), I still had work to do. I think I have now satisfied all the editors for the two articles. Had to send pictures, look up names of participants, captions and clear up a few details. Time to think about the next one which is about borders - let's just say that getting pictures will NOT be a problem.

One thing I have noticed lately - I DO NOT or TRY NOT to spend a lot of time surfing the internet, but I think it is necessary in order to keep up to date in the world and certainly in the quilting field. But honestly - the amount of giveaways is CRAZY. I mean you could spend your entire day EVERY DAY - signing up for giveaways. Send in a picture, make a quilt, tell a story, write a comment - the list goes on and on and from one blog - you go to another. You get a free pattern here and a free pattern there. I apologize to all my readers - I don't have giveaways - only entertainment and hopefully advice. I do want to thank everyone who reads this blog - hopefully you are getting enough to make it worth while to come back!!!!


Something really funny happened last night. Sooooooooooooooooooo - my best friend, internet surfer extraordinaire and collector of information on the internet and through quilt teachers  (I mean - why do I have to do that stuff when she does it for me!!!!   Anyway - she learned recently from a class with Sandra Leichner that there are these GREAT needles to use for applique. Clover - Black Gold Needles - Applique/Sharps Number 12. Excellent - if they are that good - I need to try them. The Hobby Horse did not have them in stock, so we got them to bring them in. I was doing some applique last night and decided that I NEED to try these needles. YES - they are GOOD. Why?????    Well - first off they are TINY - not that long and the eye is TINY, but the silk thread went through no problem. They seem to have a "bite" to them. They slice through the fabric nicely, but not so much that you are loosing them. Hard to explain that, but it must be the black plating on them. I am happy with them.

Wait - there is more to this story. The piece I was appliqueing is tiny and I decided that instead of gluing it or using GIANT pins, I would use applique pins - those tiny pins. Hmmmmm - where are they????   Well I have a sewing box that I used to use for applique and I thought - that is where those pins are. Off to get the sewing box.

NO WAY - there is a package of the needles that Marian talked about. I have had them for YEARS. I have not used this sewing box in a LONG LONG LONG time. The needles were not even open. 

What a hoot!!!!!!     Oh well - now that the sewing box is out, I might use it to put my embroidery and applique projects in when I travel. It is handy (a bit big), but then I could put all the stuff I need in it. Well - I'll test it and see how it goes. But I do like the needles.

Here is something else to contemplate - at what point do you put gas in your car?????    When it hits the 3/4 empty????   Or when you have been driving around with the warning light on for a couple of days????   Yesterday as I was coming home from the gym - the light came on. OK - I can hit the grocery store and then the gas station and then home. Got groceries and just as I was checking out - guess who called. Yep - that would be Marian. I called her when I got back in the car and YES - I forgot about the gas station.    This morning M wanted a ride to school - it was the boyfriend's birthday and she had freshly baked cookies (well - she did part of the work - I did the rest) and the present and a whole bunch of other stuff - so yes I drove her. Then I thought - I had better put gas in the car - so now I am standing at the gas station in a bright red sweatshirt and my green PJ pants with sewing machines all over. The lady who was in front of me who was nicely dressed in BORING BLACK glanced over several times - probably just checking out who would be wearing that outfit in PUBLIC.  But I blame this on Marian since she distracted me from getting gas the previous day - never might that the price went up TWO CENTS overnight as well!!!!   I should charge her the difference.


Well - I must get on with my day - there is lots to do. It is NOT sunny today so I won't be tempted to sit in the living room and read.
