I'm drowning

Well, I'm mostly drowning in ideas and inspiration. Isn't that awful? Actually, it's not, but there's so much to do and so little time!!!

I would like to share a proud moment with everyone this morning. The winners of QuiltCon 2020 were announced last night. And Peter Byrne (a member of the Toronto Modern Quilt Guild) won for Best Machine Quilting Frameless (meaning on a domestic sewing machine). I don't have a picture of the quilt. BUT then he also won BEST OF SHOW. That's so amazing. I'm so happy for him. He's a wonderful and humble person and so deserving of the win. I don't have pictures - he won with TWO different quilts, but I'm sure they'll be posted later today. The one picture I saw of him after his wins - he's beaming from ear to ear as he should be!!! Congratulations Peter!!!!

I was at the dressmaking class last night and got my dart, pleats, and tucks samples back. All done extremely well and well pressed according to the instructor and the marks attached. No time for photos yet.

I managed to get my zipper samples done yesterday and handed them in. They are NOT perfect but if they were made using matching thread, I'd be OK with them. I'm still working on the invisible zipper sample but that didn't need to be handed in. I need to get started on my skirt. It's due in a month! Last night, we made a gathered waistband sample and a sample of the vent for the back of the skirt. I needed to do some hand stitching on the vent, so I'll hand them all in next week.

I was searching for a Dream Big panel. Preferably one of the bright bold ones. I've managed to buy one from a person online - I believe it's one of the teal ones. But then as I was waiting for some responses from the group, I thought I should check my stash. Oh yep - I already have one!!  But that's OK - because I technically wanted two of them. They are both different colors and both are fairly bright.

I thought I would share this fidget quilt with you. I was meeting up with someone the other day and they brought one in to show me. This one is more geared to a man. It has all kinds of fidgety things on it. A small tie and under the tie are buttons. A tassel, velcro, buttons, keys, buckles, and all kinds of other things. They are used for patients with dementia and autism. Apparently, they love the tactile feel of all the different kinds of fabric and the doodads on it.  Hey - I could use one of these sometimes. Actually, I think people should have a small one attached to the steering wheel of their cars!!! It's supposed to be very calming.

Wouldn't that be great for smokers or stress eaters? OK -- Now I want to make one for ME. I have a TON of those tactile gizmos in the studio! I'm going to collect a few and some of the more tactile fabrics and donate it to Ann so she can make more What a great idea! And who knows - we might just be using one of those at some point in our life.

I've also had two private classes for sewing machines in the last couple of days. Both customers went home happy and that's all that's important. One of the sewing machines was a challenge to thread. It was a Janome and you had to TUG HARD to get the threads to sit in the tension disks. We did get it working, but it took a few minutes.

I think I've pretty much seen most of the issues that can arise from threading issues so if you need assistancer, I can probably help you.

In between all that, I have managed to get two small customer quilts done.

Both are small, but it still takes time to load, choose the thread, etc. One is trimmed and the other will be trimmed later today. Ready for delivery next week after I make some labels for the quilts. Oh yes - I run a full-service place - I put on bindings, make labels  - whatever the customer doesn't want to do!

I had asked you what UFOs you're working on and this is what I got from Mary.

I pulled out "High Strung" from the HHQG anniversary workshop with Jeanne and Shelley. I had all of the applique ready to be stuck on and machine-stitched and all the green fabrics ready to be cut and put it in a box and there it sat. Yesterday I stuck the applique pieces down and cut the green fabric into 5.5-inch squares. Do you remember what year the workshop was? The instruction sheet says Tuesday, October 16 but no year.

Notice that she asked for the year? Well, I'm never going to remember something like that, but I went to my blog and typed in Jeanne in that big white bar at the top and guess what? A blog post dated October 18, 2012, popped up. There you go Mary - 2012. It's time to get that quilt done!!!!

Elle and Torry are also working on UFOs. Elle is struggling with one that she has partially cut out. Sometimes, finding a new home for the UFO is a good way of dealing with it. Our tastes change, our skillset changes and well - if she finds a good home for it - I think she should give it away!!!  Torry is recovering from surgery at the moment so she's building a plan to get a quilt completed. Torry - I think you should be writing that plan down - not just in your head!!!

So as you are cleaning and sorting and decluttering, here's one other thing to keep in mind. I haven't done this. I have intentions of doing this, but it hasn't happened yet. There are so many days when I wish I could just get rid of stuff so I wouldn't have so much to deal with. But the fun stuff takes precedence. And work is fun so that's double incentive to do the fun stuff.

But have a read through this article. Start making a box - whether that be for your kids or your significant other or whoever remains behind. This is a GOOD IDEA. I also think we should start labeling our stuff  - like photo albums. "When I'm gone, this photo album goes in the trash. Don't even bother to look at it", especially if it's photos of vacations or whatever. Although that isn't so much a big deal with the thousands of digital photos we all have. Just hit DELETE and they're gone.

I have plans on what I want to do with my photos and other small mementos, but my kid reads my blog and I'm not ready to share it yet. Have a happy day M!!! Love you!!! It's almost her birthday!

On that note, it's Sit n Sew today and I'll be sewing on some homework - no fun stuff today! Well, any day sewing with friends is a fun day regardless of what you sew.

The ART of finishing

As the end of the year closes in, it's time to reflect on the past year and figure out how to go forward. What do we want to do with our lives? our hobby? our stuff?

One thing I came to the realization is that in the quilting world, we all have a tendency to shop like we're running a business, yet we use it up like it's a hobby. Does that make sense?? Most of us do not just buy for a specific project. We see something we like - we buy it! We end up with so much.

The same would ring true for projects. We see something so cute that we can't resist starting it. Then we get distracted by the next cute thing and well - you know what happens.

I know that there are a LOT of projects hanging out in my studio that are not finished. Some are close, some are far from that final stitch. This past year, I decided that I need to get my act together and made myself a goal of completing 100 things. I set my own rules for this.

• I did not count any quilting/binding for paying customers. 
• I did not count any quilts that went in the "to be quilted pile". 
• I only counted items that I had actually finished. The majority of those items are mine, but there were a couple that I finished for someone that had passed and I counted those. 

So it didn't matter if the item only needed a label, I counted that as finished. Cheating? Nope - they were my rules after all and my goal was to get stuff cleaned up that wasn't done. It's so easy to let things slip. No labels, no sleeves, no bindings. Why oh why did I not put them on at the time?

This coming year, I'm going to keep track of three categories - quilts that get moved to the "to be quilted" pile. Things I work on for customers and things that I completely finish. That will give me a much better picture of everything that I worked on in the year. I'm OK that I didn't count the other items - well, I could count the customer quilts I quilted and I could find the number of items that went into the "to be quilted" pile, but there's no need. Going forward, I'll have three lists.

I have two days left in the year to complete stuff. Thankfully there are no urgent deadlines. Well, that's not true as I have an item for a magazine that I'm finishing off today and will get in a box tomorrow. I also have my little book with all the deadlines listed so I should be able to avoid issues going forward. This one is a bit at the urgent point because the backing for the item had to come from California and it only arrived on Friday. I thought it wasn't going to make the deadline!!!  That little item will be quilted and bound today.

Ronda was here bright and early yesterday and we sewed all day. The day passed so quickly that soon it was 4 PM and she left. Then I scooted to the library and the hardware store to do some errands. My FitBit was in heaven and did almost 17,000 steps yesterday. It was a beautiful day for a walk.

Then I got down to business and started some hand sewing to finish some things. Here's what happened. Oh - I did make Ronda a wee thing - I'll show that to you tomorrow.

As you may know, I've been debating about the label thing. Should the quilts have labels or not?? Well, darn it - I'm still torn, but I really think that listing the pattern name, the designer and the darn YEAR are important. That means I have a lot of labels to sew on!!!!

I mostly sewed labels and sleeves on last night but before I could sew the labels on, I had to make them. And in order to make them, I had to do some research. Yes - if I would have made the label at the time I finished the item, it wouldn't have been so bad. I even had to go back into my old blog on LiveJournal to get some of the information.

I do not believe that this quilt has ever made the blog. It's an Ocean Waves as you probably guessed.

But read the label. You see why this quilt needed a label! When was the quilt was actually finished? I'm not sure. But I'm guessing that it was the year after I started it. I can't even remember if the quilt ever was on her bed. Isn't that awful????  Now it has a label with some of the dates on it. That quilt has been sitting in a bag under the long arm for a long, long time.

I knew exactly what the book looked like that I had used for the pattern. Now that all the books are on the shelf, it was pretty easy to find it. It'll be even easier when they are completely sorted into categories.

I got the label on this table runner. Technically Diane finished it by hand stitching the binding down, but I put the label on so it's completely done now. Thanks, Diane for helping out!

I had to dig back to find the name of the ruler that was used to make it. It was made in 2014! That runner was sitting in a bag in the storage room for a couple of years!

The next quilt to get a label was this one. This is a version of Hopscotch by the girls at The Quilt Patch in Moose Jaw. The shop is no longer open, but boy - I loved that store and have many fond memories of Jeanne and Shelley.

I made and quilted it in 2013. No label, but now it's completely done.

Next up was this one that I designed with a Northcott panel. The panel was part of their Naturescapes collection and is long gone although you may find it in a shop. The sleeves were made, the label was made and the binding was partially attached. The binding is now on, the sleeves are hand stitched in place as is the label.

I think that takes me to finish 93 of the year. Something like that. There's another stack of small projects that I hope to get done before the New Year rings in tomorrow night.

I didn't take a picture of the stack, but there are three small quilts left to bind, a bag that needs a row of topstitching and a quilt that needs a sleeve and a label.

And there's this pile as well. A rug and my portable display boards.

Things to finish before the end of the year

I think you get the picture that there's so much that is so close to being finished. That's my goal - finish those things. As I was searching for a date for a project, I realized that the date is one of the most important things to put on the label. I was searching for information about a quilt challenge that I had made years ago. After some searching, I realized that the owner had passed in 2014. And a previous challenge for the shop was made in 2008. My guess is that this challenge was made in 2009. A quick text to Carol and she'll let me know next week - so that one can't quite be finished this year!  What was on the back of the quilt? A paper label with not much information on it!!! 

And I've already got two piles of stuff for finishing in 2019. The back pile needs to have backings and bindings made and I think one small project needs the border put on. Oh - I have a FULL tub of other projects in the same boat!! The pile at the front needs some quilting or other work in order to complete the items.

I'm sure if I looked really hard, I could easily find 50 small things like above that are very close to being finished but are not. And let's not even think about the labels!!!!!

In the new year, I'll be sharing with you the mess of quilts upstairs and what I'm doing with them. You'll be shocked. I'm shocked. Let's just say that we have a very large hallway upstairs and the "walls" are closing in! OK - time to start selling some of these things! How to pick the favorites that I want to keep?????

Here's your assignment for today. Oh yes - If I'm going through the agony of all this - I don't want to go alone.

1. Make your list of 12 UFOs for 2019. I've made mine. I haven't been that great at finishing the items on the 2017 or 2018 list, but those UFOs are constantly on my mind and I'm getting them done - slowly. I wasn't kind to myself when I chose them. May were huge projects and some resulted in multiple quilts. The list for 2019 is much friendlier and will allow me some time to finish off the 2017 and 2018 lists. 2017 is almost finished. 
2. Find yourself a notebook so you can keep your lists in. 
3. Decide what lists you want to keep - things finished? things labeled? things started? things quilted? You decide - it's your rules!!!
4. Set some goals for yourself. Can be only one, can be small, can be huge. You decide - again - these are your rules! Remember goals need to be SMART. If you're not familiar with the SMART goal setting process, check out that link. 
5.  DO NOT attempt to keep your goals/lists in your head. It doesn't work. You MUST write them down. 
6. Set up a Task Master if you need help to break down the larger goals (like a full-blown UFO) into small chunks that you can achieve each week. I set myself small (SMART) goals (tasks) for the week. Look at your schedule for the week and determine how much time you can devote to sewing and then write down your tasks for the week. I don't roll anything over if I couldn't finish it that week. I left the task unchecked off and some weeks, I didn't add anything new - I went back and finished those tasks that I had not had a chance to accomplish. 
7. Remember that EVERYTHING takes at least twice as long as you think it will. Start off easy and only put ONE task on your weekly list. But BREAK IT DOWN into manageable chunks. 
8. It's OK if you don't get it done when you thought you would. Life happens. Be flexible. 
9. It's OK to buy, but try to buy only what you NEED to finish a project. Don't buy if you don't have a home for that item in your house. You're just adding to the existing clutter. 
10. Don't start anything that you have no intention of finishing that year. 
11. "Finishing" an item may be as simple as collecting all the bits and giving it away. You personally don't have to complete the projects if you don't like them. Count it as a finished item since it's no longer in your house!

If that isn't enough for you, here's a couple of handholding things that can help. 

• We have a Facebook page called Motivational Monday that has helped myself and others document what we finished and encourage each other to get things done. 
• If you live in my area, I'll be hosting a UFO class in my studio. Once a month, you'll come with your UFO project to get help, motivation, and assistance to break the project down into manageable pieces. You set your own goals. There's a class fee of $25 and there's a "bank fee" of $100.00. If you accomplish your monthly tasks, you'll get a portion of the "bank fee" back. If you accomplish everything, you get all your "banked" money back. If you don't, then I get to keep it!!!  I'll be posting more details on my blog in the next couple of days. 

On that note, I"m out of here. I'm on a mission and I will NOT miss that goal of completing 100 items for 2018!!!!!!

Spring Market - Day Two

Today is the first day of Spring Market, 2016.  Well, the first day of the main floor being open. Yesterday was Schoolhouse presentations.

Before all the craziness of the day started yesterday, I took a walk to Temple Square which is less than five minutes away.  A big imposing wall surrounds the temple, but two gates open at 6 AM.  I took some pictures which of course are on my camera and some day, I must figure out how to get them from the camera to the internet and sized for the internet.  There is an easy way I'm sure.  I don't have Photoshop with me to edit them - that's my problem.

Anyway, the gardens were very serene and it made me want to sit and reflect life. However, that brought up moments of sadness and well, I did have a little episode which is OK.  It is a beautiful place to just reflect life.

As I walked around, I noticed a couple of things.  The entire complex is huge - there are office buildings for the church, there are beautiful and well-tended gardens and loads of water features. Loads of them including two infinity pools (not the kind you swim in, but water features).  They were all very beautiful. I also noticed that MANY well-dressed business people (mostly men) were headed into the various office buildings and it wasn't even 7 am yet.

I did walk into the temple entrance and there was a guard checking IDs. Hm - can't go that way. Then I saw a couple of people dressed in religious garb (priests?) that were tending to the other entrance and well - I thought I didn't need to go any further. I needed to get back to the hotel for breakfast.

After breakfast, we were back over to the convention center. And I must say that it was all hands on deck. Almost to the point of being too many hands, but the booth went up fast and it looks great. I'll try to post some pictures on Facebook later today.

I have to say that Deborah, Joyce and myself skipped out of the prepping to attend a couple of Schoolhouse presentations.  Personally, I would like to attend Schoolhouse all day as I think there is valuable information to be gathered. And let's not forget that most of them hand out free stuff!!!  Deborah very graciously gave me all her free stuff!

My goal was to get to some of the competitors booths to see what they were doing for Schoolhouse. We saw Elizabeth Hartman and Heather Jones who are designing for Robert Kaufman. Both were OK, but not sure how educational they were. These presentations are not supposed to be a sales pitch, but they usually end up being that way.  Ours were NOT. Both were shorter than the 30 minutes as well.

Then back to the booth where we prepped for our Schoolhouse presentations.  Joyce Hughes, who does amazing things with panels, did a presentation and then Deborah and I did the presentation for Northcott.  Both were well received which is the important thing. Both presentations were filmed, so hopefully that will go up on the Northcott YouTube channel in the near future.

Back to the booth, where by this time, everything pretty much had been done - a bit of tidying up and we were good.  I think it was 4:30 PM.  And guess who I ran into?   I knew they were there because they had a Schoolhouse presentation right after ours, but no time to get to it.  Jeanne and Shelley from The Quilt Patch in Moose Jaw.  How fun to see them - it's been a while.  And two of the girls from the store were also with them - Jo and Colleen.

Barely had time to put my stuff in the room and then four of us, Shirley, Deborah, Joyce and myself headed out for an early dinner.  We hit The Cheesecake Factory which is just minutes away and had a fabulous dinner. While the rest of them had a dish called Bang Bang, I had an omelet and a beer.  I know - why not!  Life is too short to get caught up in what's right and what's wrong. At least, the omelet and beer were for dinner, not breakfast!

Then Shirley, Joyce and I headed back to the convention center for Sample Spree.  I've heard a lot about Sample Spree but had never been.  Oh boy - the place was a ZOO.  First, because we are not buyers, we can't get in with the rush which is good because the line was insane - it was HUGE. So we sat and waited and then paid our $10 to get in and then we were in the insanity. Instantly, we were sucked into the crowd and I lost sight of Shirley and Joyce within seconds. Many of the booths were swamped - OK - all of the booths were swamped.  People were coming away with HUGE shopping bags. Not one, not two, but multiple shopping bags filled with FQ bundles, and other pre-cuts.

There seemed to be many fabric manufacturers there and some pattern designers. I think the origin of sample spree was for shops to purchase samples made by the designers to hang in their shops for classes and to sell patterns and other supplies.  Now, it's just a fabric buying frenzy.  I went around several times and I thought long and hard about what I wanted/needed.  Did I really need another FQ bundle that I would probably never use? Nope - so even though several of them were calling my name, I wasn't really in love with any of them. So I didn't buy any.  But I did buy things that were unusual - a gorgeous panel with the alphabet on it, but this is NOT a kids alphabet panel.  It's by Windham and well - I love it.

I bought a pack of BIG hexagons from ME + YOU (Hoffman) and I bought some mesh and a bundle of new patterns from byAnnie. Before I left home, I threw all my US money (bills and coin) into my bag. There was a lot of coin - well a couple of dollars worth and it was getting heavy to carry.  I found a Mini Charm pack (2 1/2") squares for $3.  There are 84 charms in it, matches the ones that I got at the Schoolhouse earlier in the day and I unloaded most of my change.  Whew - that was a cool purchase. Did not use my credit card once! And I still have cash in my wallet.

Thanks Shirley for letting experience Sample Spree to its fullest. They should sell T-shirts that say "I survived Sample Spree".

Not that I'm a name dropper, but I did see Eleanor Burns at Sample Spree and as the room emptied, I went to her table to thank her. She came to the Hobby Horse many many years ago. 16 to be exact and I took a class from her. (She even remembered that Dwight was getting married that year - I had forgotten that!)  She was the one that taught the importance of using a quilt stiletto for sewing. I thanked her for that - it was one of the most valuable quilting tips I've ever learned. Oh by the way, I've seen Alex Anderson several times, said HI to her yesterday and she's staying in our hotel.  Oh Susan - if only you could be here. I do have an extra bed in my room!

Back to the hotel room and to bed.  Of course, getting to bed early (9 PM) means waking up at some ridiculous time. But that's OK - I just relaxed in the fact that I had nothing to do. No quilts to quilt, no bindings to sew.  I was just content to relax. Imagine!  But I had computer work to do, so while I'm still in bed, I've been on the computer for hours. Got hungry and dug out my chocolate bar and ate chocolate in bed while blogging.  Love it!!!!!

Gosh - I still have a couple of hours before I need to be at the booth and I'm signed up to take a small class with Helen Stubbings this morning. It's going to be a busy day of checking out the booths to see what interesting things are there and see if there is anyone I want to work with for future projects.  Thankfully, most of what we see isn't available for sale.  Yeah!!!!   I may take another reflective moment in the beautiful gardens at the temple.

One more block bites the dust!

I managed to get one more embroidered block done during embroidery club. Slow progess as there are a LOT of curves on the block and I have to made FOUR of them.  Two are now done and two more to go.  Then there are three more blocks after that for a total of five blocks still to stitch. Before Christmas????   Maybe - but it will be tight!!!

Then off to my beginner class at Sew Sisters.  The energy in that room is incredible. Here are ten brand new quilters excited and ready to quilt!!!!   They did a great job on assembling their blocks and almost all the homework was complete and a few had assembled their tops!!  They will be quilting next time - I hope that won't slow down their enthusiasm. I didn't get pictures of their blocks - I should have!!!!

She did a fabulous job on it and I am sure this is the first of many great projects.  Leanne went to the CreativFestival and bought a book. When she showed me the book - I had to laugh.  Guess what book she bought????

She is making a very cute project from the book and had made a great start on it.  Oh yes - these ladies are very keen and it is very exciting!!!!!

And let's not forget the label that Giovanna made for her bag.  So cute!!!!!

When I got home - I had lots of stuff to do and I managed to get little of it done!!!   Why? Because I was on the phone trying to get my mother-in-law's cable TV situation straightened out.  Oh yes - it appears that someone on the staff made a HUGE error and well I was on the phone for hours during various parts of the day trying to get it resolved.  Guess what??  Not completely fixed so I get to spend more time on the phone this morning!!!!!!!!!!!!   Doesn't even make sense to blame the COMPANY because obviously it is one employee that messed up!!!!


I did manage to get some more work done on my Christmas gift bags for the guild, my secret Christmas project (which I am happy to say I am working on and it is not even Christmas EVE!!!!) and I got this finished...............

Let's not forget that I started a new quilt this morning - an easy one and almost have the blocks done - told you is was fast.

Yep - so making progress - just not fast enough.  It is all the little interruptions in a day that mess me up.  Like being on the phone - I managed to putter with small things, but what a pain to just have to deal with stuff including my girls who want IN and then OUT and then IN and then OUT and not at the same time!!!!!


On that note - I have my critical list of THREE things (OK - there are FOUR on it) for today and I must get busy.   Oh yes if you want some eye candy - have a look at this web site - the winners from the Houston Quilt Show. TGIF!

I cannot believe it is Friday today! Where did the week go?  I got a lot done, but boy - I would love to have a couple of extra days!

An awesome workout at the gym today.  Funny how some days you just put in that extra effort, sweat a bit more, pedal a bit faster, push a bit harder.  anyway - it was a great workout and that will make an awesome day!!!!

Yesterday was Thursday Therapy and I am always up for a day of sewing. I worked on stuff for my striped workshop that is tomorrow.  I am sewing like mad but just doesn't seem like I am sewing fast enough.  The class is going to be amazing.  However I have to get myself organized today or they are going to be overwhelmed. Guess I better make some kind of a hand out.

Maria picked me up another license plate!   Yes - my collection is getting big. Got to find a plan for them all. 

The other day I was at Fabricland and picked up this Sewing Machine Mat.   I was using a piece of shelf liner for my machine at home and the other day I noticed that when I was sewing, the flip up lid of the sewing machine was bouncing.  I hadn't really noticed that before so not sure if the shelf liner wasn't doing its' job or what the problem was. Anyway - the mat was on sale so I bought it. Put it under my machine and no more bounce!!!!

They are on sale at Fabricland for $8.50.    I bought a second one (there are NONE at the Winston Churchill store, but lots at John Street store) to use when I go to retreats.  It doesn't stop the bounce from sewing on a plastic table, but it helps.

Went to book club last night.  Oh boy - what a great discussion we had about To Kill a Mockingbird.  Boy amazing how life has changed since the 1930s and YET there are some situations which haven't changed at all.  I took my knitting and got about 1/3 of one of my knitted squares done!  Yeah!!!!!   I am going to get that afghan done if it kills me.


I see by the weather this morning that it is time to dig out the fingerless gloves.  My hands are cold and when they are cold - well - they are not always happy. Gosh - it is only mid-September.

On that note - got to run - I've got some paperwork to take care of this morning and then loads to do this afternoon to finish prepping for the class.

The Quilt Patch

I made it back home late last night. I am an OK flyer.  If things are smooth - then I am OK. I am busy reading my book and everything is just fine.  Then as we get close to Toronto, they announce that the weather is not the best in Toronto and only one runway is open. There is a backlog and we will have to circle so we circled over Orangeville and Collingwood a couple of times. It is quite cloudy out.  As we are circling - there is a bit of turbulence.  Bob (an Air Canada pilot) says that turbulence is just like bumps on the road - doesn't make me feel any better!!!!    And honestly the turbulence wasn't bad.  

Then I see lightening. Oh boy - that can't be good.  Ah finally we are getting back to the airport.   Have to swing way out over the west end and the sky clears.  Then poof - can't see a thing.  There was one flash of lightening that seemed to be very close. ACK - I don't like this at all. At last there are the lights of Mississauga and oh great - it is pouring rain!!!!!

At last we are on the ground!  People don't applaud anymore, but I did in my mind! Like I said - I am an OK flyer - but things have to be perfect!   Then we had to wait on the tarmac because things were backed up at the gates. Finally we got off and I went to wait for my luggage.   I don't know about you, but whenever I get off a plane and you have to walk up that incline to get to the airport - I feel like an idiot.  I guess my legs are tired from sitting and I am trying to walk my normal pace.  I feel very awkward.

Collected my WET luggage and off to get my ride.  The airport was a ZOO.  Flights were cancelled or major delays.  And it is pouring rain outside and people are waiting at the curb to pick up people.   Can they NOT wait in the cell phone parking lot until their party is ready????   It is a major pain in the butt and the security people were nowhere to be seen last night.  They usually hustle people out of there.

But there was a LOT of lightening.   Actually was surprised that they let us land and that we got our luggage.  Nothing got wet inside my suitcase so that was great.  I did unpack all my stuff and now my studio looks like this...........

Got ONE WEEK to get it in order before I am off again.  And I do have tons of work to do this week.


Well as you know when I was out west - I visited at The Quilt Patch.

They had Christmas in July event and the place was packed with customers, well wishers and staff   (oh and home baked goodies).

 It was loads of fun and while I did help out a bit with customers - (which I LOVED), I felt that I needed something more concrete to do.  So I asked Shelley if there was anything that I could sew.  YES - I was having withdrawal!!!!!!   As a matter of fact - there was this applique that SHELLEY needed to get done and it keep getting put to the bottom of the pile.

Well I could do that.  So Shelley got me organized - set up the sewing machine, got the thread and the blocks and I was off.  Now it is NEVER fun to do applique on a different machine than your own. I had never sewn on a Bernina before and while that wasn't a big deal - I sure did miss the sensor foot on my Husqvarna machine. However once I got the hang of the stitch movement - it was no big deal.

These are blocks from their latest book and YES - there were a LOT of points.  I managed to get all twelve blocks done. And one staff member said - lucky it wasn't snowflakes - YES - that would be way more points!!!!!!

I managed to get a LOT of work done on the first day as few people wandered upstairs into the classroom.  BUT on day two ( I was so close to finishing - I wasn't going to leave the job half done) - there was a class going on and people were coming in to chat.

The students were making this bag made from burlap and canvas.  I love it - and there was another style of burlap as well. I loved the bag, but alas - no room in the suitcase for even a scrap of canvas.  Don't forget - I had all that boucle with me!!!!!

But I had some great conversations - showed a few people some tips on applique and made a great contact at one of the Saskatchewan guilds.  She was a wealth of information and I look forward to chatting more with her.   Oh yes - my Dad taught me those skills. Just blab to everyone - you never know what tidbits you will collect!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so darn proud of these ladies and all their accomplishments.  I just love their store - it just has a feel to it that is warm, welcoming and FUN!!!!!    Look at that awesome CUTE CUTE block of the month - upper right of the photo.  I ordered my kit and will pick up at the Fall CreativFestival. Can't wait - I know - I don't need another kit, but that one was very cute and not expensive.  The quilt is not huge so should be fast to make.


On that note - I am off for a fun day and then I must buckle down and get some work done.

A day in heaven...................... -

Make that quilting heaven.  I spent the day with the girls at The Quilt Patch.  I did NOT take my camera so no pictures. I have one I took with my phone.

Anyway - it was their Christmas in July event. There are three quilt stores in Moose Jaw - I know - how they all survive is beyond me. Although one of them is closing - Heather's Quilting Palette will be closed soon.  I loved that store as she was into weird things - Heather is a fabulous fibre artist and you never knew what goodies you would find in the shop. Of course - I had to make a pit stop there.

Then over to Quilter's Haven who is doing the Christmas in July event in conjunction with The Quilt Patch.  I did not buy much - I am very conscious of the size of my suitcase which is NOT big and I hit FIVE quilt stores while I was here.  I was very good at all of them until....................

The Quilt Patch.   Jeanne and Shelley just have too many goodies in that store and the longer I stayed and the more wine I had - well everything just looked too yummy and my suitcase just got bigger and bigger (in my mind!)

I did help out a bit in the store which was fun, but I had asked Shelley at one point if there was any sewing I could do.  Well as a matter of fact - YES.  So I spent the afternoon doing machine applique. On a BERNINA no less.  I have never sewn on a Bernina and while it was no problem and worked like a charm when I got the stitch going - it is NOT my favourite machine.

There are twelve blocks - each block has one tree (with a stump and the tree) and three stars.  I got everything done but the stars.  So I'm going back this morning to finish the stars.  I know -  a real sucker for punishment. But I like doing it.  We must now watch as Shelley has to pay this favour forward and I will be watching to see what she does!!!!!  

 And let's not forget the boucle quilts that we are going to make.  I know - you have to see this to believe it. They ended up with TWO bolts of this gorgeous boucle.  I am not about to make clothes from it and was only going to get enough to trim a project. Oh let's get enough to make a quilt.  It will be very pretty when done.

Lovely boucle.  This picture is so washed out.  It is a gorgeous shade of green and brown. 

I had to pick a beautiful brown flannel to go with it.  Can you see the edge of my suitcase above - the fabric is that shade.  It is going to be fun and all about texture!!!!!

The weather here is pretty crazy - got really windy the other day and stormy. Some tree branches even came down. The temperature must have dropped like 10 degrees in a matter of a half an hour.  Pretty scary.

One of the things I love is that everyone lives so close to each other.  You go out for dinner - you just walk around the corner.  It is great!!!!  I could live here if I could find a house with a fabulous porch.  And the house prices - CHEAP!!!!!!

I am NOT the only crazy person out there with the Row by Row.  Here is the latest update.   Thanks again to all those other crazy ladies out there.   I appreciate you picking these up for me.

Hopscotch

My favourite pattern for a quick and easy quilt is Hopscotch. This pattern was designed by the ladies at The Quilt Patch in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

I have made MANY versions of this quilt and so has everyone else!!!!   The other day, I told Jeanne and Shelley that if they had a dollar for every Hopscotch quilt made - they would be RICH!!!!!

Here are a couple of the latest ones done...........

Ronda bought this flannel kit from The Quilt Patch. The pieces are a big bigger than the normal one - but it is awesome. She got the top together at my most recent Sit n Sew. Oh yes - I press that quilt for her!!!!!

This is the latest one that I have made. This was made for our Outreach program at a local guild.  We got a bundle of 8 FQs and were to make something. I didn't like all the colours together so I split the bundle, added some of my own fabric and got this great kids quilt.  I really like the way it turned out.    Now I have another one on the go (with the remainder of the bundle and more of my fabric).  I was hoping to have it finished yesterday at my Thursday sew day, EXCEPT I cannot count and I cut too many of one piece and not enough of another - so I dug out the extra fabric last night and will get working on it later. 

Got the binding made and need to get the backing an binding. 

I will dig up some of the various versions of Hopscotch. I can't right now as I am on my way for my WAY OVERDUE physical this morning. And because I am getting my blood work done - NO BREAKFAST.   I'm hungry!!!!!!!!!!   I better not have to wait long!


And I would have had more time to blog this morning except that I spent a LOT of time trying to find a specific picture. Now I did find the picture, but only the BLOG version (that means the resolution is NOT good enough for the purpose that I need. )   Oh dear - that means I had better get those pictures tagged and sorted into proper folders. Then this tedious task would NOT have been an issue.   Oh yes - there are THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of pictures to go through. Thank goodness with the Windows Photo Gallery - it is fairly easy to go through them but still a time consuming project.  There are TONS that need to be deleted. OK - got to schedule some time for that.   BUT I also found some amazing pictures that I need to do something with - great memories!!!!!!!!

Day 22 - Regina - Crooked Lake

Got up early, had breakfast and Jeanne and Jim drove me back to Regina to meet up with the rest of the group. It was going to be a long day. I think I arrived at the campground at 6:50 and by 7:09, I was riding out the gate!!!!!   No time to waste when it is a long day.

By long day - we did 168 KM. I am a bit disappointed in my new Garmin bike computer. I am able to collect the data, but for some reason, it is acting up and doesn't want me to see the final summary for the day (at least not in the same format as it was originally) which means I can't e-mail it to those that were getting the e-mails. I called Garmin today (July 17) and they are telling me I have to RESET the computer. NOT before backing up all the data. I have managed (by using Michel's computer) to back up the stuff on a stick, but I am leery of resetting the computer. I hope to try later today to upload it to the web, then I will happily get rid of the data on the computer because it is filling up.

Anyway - I will be home in about TWO WEEKS (just for one day) and hopefully can deal with it on my computer at home.

OK - back to Day 22.

We started with a head wind  - what else is new. Then we changed directions and got a tail wind. OK - I'll take that any day. We were on Highway 1 which seems like a good thing, but honestly it got a bit boring. So as much as I would LOVE to ride on the nice (in most cases) shoulder of Highway One (and even happy with the traffic), it can get BORING, so the smaller routes (and more meandering which means LONGER) are more interesting. Plus we get to stop at all kinds of little stores along the way.

Stopped for food. As the trip goes on, we seem to be stopping for a LOT more to eat on the road. Actually we are stopping more for drinks as the days are getting hotter. And chocolat milk has become my new best friend. Today wasn't that hot as it was cloudy for most of the day and that kept the heat down. YEAH!!!!!

There were storm clouds all around us, but we did not get any rain and I am quite happy about that.

Then we went down into Qu'appelle Valley. Wow - this place is gorgeous and I had no idea how big it was. Not only is it wide, but it is very long. Funny - a part of my "home" province that I don't really know. I have driven through the valley - down one side and up the other, but never been in this part.

The lake was HUGE and should be called LONG lake, not Crooked Lake. However as we turned off the highway onto the scenic route to get to the campsite, we were met with a FIERCE headwind and we still had 16 KM to ride. Given that it was already a long day, this did NOT sit well with me (well the others as well), but let's face it - I HATE to work hard on my bike.   I now you find that hard to believe - but it is true!!!!!

It can be quite a challenge to ride into the wind. It is very difficult physically as you are working harder and tend to sit deeper onto the seat, so your butt is protesting, your hands are protesting as you push harder into the handlebars. And your brain is saying - ENOUGH of this - just flag down a truck!!!!!    BUT - your ego says - NO WAY - suck it up princess, gear down and get to the destination. You can't have bragging rights if you don't do the time!!!!!!!!

The park was beautiful (although 6 days later, I can't even remember what it looked like!!!) All campsites seem to be blurring into each other. I MUST remember to take a picture because my brain just can't handle all that!!!!!!


Yes - it is still our rest day (In Kenora) as I write this. I am going to forfeit pictures until later as the internet just doesn't seem to have enough bandwidth to process them properly. And it is a beautiful hot day outside and where am I?????   Inside the office in the A/C (which normally I don't care for), but at least there is a table to sit at and electrical plug.

Day 21 - Rest Day - Regina

Yes - I have a LOT of catching up to do. Let's just say that communications in Manitoba were a little sketchy at times. Was hard to get some cell service at times as well.

So back to the rest day in Regina. Well technically Moose Jaw for me.

Last night we chatted on the front porch, we had wine and then I had to crash.

After having a wonderful sleep in a real bed (and I just love Jeanne and Jim's house). It is the ONLY house that I know (including my own) where you just feel at home. And there are quilts everywhere.

Sat around and chatted with Jim for a bit and then we went down to the fitness training center where he teaches spin classes. But these are not just any ordinary spin classes - OH NO - you take your own bike, hook it up to the CompuTrainer and pedal away. It really is quite neat. I must say that I have something similiar at home and have never hooked it up.
I think I just might do that when I get home.

Then I wandered around Moose Jaw for a bit. I feel like I know that town and I have only been there a couple of times. Checked out the "other" two quilt stores - yes how this town can support THREE quilt stores is beyond me. First one, I did not buy anything. Yes - I am slowly going down hill. The second one, I bought a pattern. And the third one - the Quilt Patch - well - I had to send the parcel home!!!!!!   Now I did not go crazy and I know you all wanted me to buy you something, BUT - don't forget The Quilt Patch will be at the CreativFestival in October. Then I'll pick up a few more things. However I really really must get some of the other kits done from them BEFORE I buy more???????

I really really love The Quilt Patch and sorry I won't be there for the outdoor quilt show this coming Sunday. It just has a beautiful feel to it. Well if you go to their booth at the CreativFestival - it feels just the same as the store. The next best thing to being there. PLUS - I got their new book and I LOVE IT!!!!!   I can't wait to get home and something from it.


Had lunch at the little cafe across the street. Hey M - do you remember that place?????   Well I had something to eat and  I saw the milk shakes so I thought - why not. OMG - the milkshake was HUGE and I thought I was going to burst when I left.

I had a look in all the little stores trying to find a souvenir patch for the province of Saskatchewan. I had picked up one in BC and Alberta, but there was NONE to be found in Moose Jaw. I have asked my Mom to try and find one to add to the collection.

HEY M - I got a new GORGEOUS bracelet. I saw someone with the bracelet while I was shopping around. I KNEW exactly where they got it, so I went there and sure enough - there was the bracelet. When I saw this design, I knew it was for me.


Back to the house to get a bit of blogging done, but then people starting arriving for a BBQ. I got to see people that I had done the Tour Pacific (2011) with - Larry and Eve and of course Jim.
It was great to see them.. Of course some of the girls from the shop were there, husbands or wives. I felt like I was at HOME!!!!!!   And Jim, Larry, Tim (Shelley's husband) and Mark (who also did the Tour Pacific in 2011, but lives in BC) are doing the Tour Atlantic this year. Unfortuantely we will NOT get to see them. The two trips do not cross paths, although we are about one day away from each other. BUT - one day on a bike is a LONG way.


It was hot, so very nice to NOT be riding a bike.


As I write this, we are in a new campground (obviously) and the laundry opened at 8 AM. So I was down here at 7:30 just to make sure that I got my laundry done first thing as I am meeting someone (can't tell you who yet) at 9:30 AM.  But ONLY for coffee - my priority today is to update the blog.


OK - off to edit a couple of pictures and get this blog posted.

Day 20 - Craik to Regina

What can I say - we did another 125 K today. That is a total of 700  K in the last five days. Now I grew up in the prairies and I know what they are like, but today was BORING!!!!!!!!

Just more of the divided highway. More wide shoulders that became narrow shoulders and then became wide and then became narrow and then wide - well you get the picture!!!!!!


My brain and my butt were NUMB after the end of the day!

I only took TWO pictures.

I aired out my tent and sleeping bag when we arrived at camp after we took the scenic route through Regina to get to our camp site. I also cleaned my bike and did the laundry. Tomorrow is a rest day, but I am NOT staying in camp!!!!!


Jeanne and Jim were picking me up!!!!!!!   You know Jeanne from The Quilt Patch in Moose Jaw and I met Jim on Tour Pacific a couple of years ago. They are just the most hospitable people in the world. After we had a great dinner at a local restaurant, we zoomed out to their house where we sat around for a couple of hours chatting over a glass of wine.

And I got to sleep in a REAL BED!!!!!!!   Not that I missed sleeping in a real bed, but it was nice to not be in a campground!!!!!!!


On that note - that is it for this day.

Oh my - what a wild day yesterday.

I spent a GREAT part of the day on the computer. No that is a lie - I was also outside for a long time. However I got a LOT done on the computer. My goal was to organize the photos. OK - I wasn't planning to get it completely done, but I wanted to get everything on the external drive. And I SUCCEEDED. I finished up this morning. The external drive holds 1 Terrabyte of data and it is HALF FULL. I have no idea how many pictures there are, but let's just say that is in the THOUSANDS - MANY thousands.

OK - I hang my head in shame that I have let yet ANOTHER thing get out of hand. (I am making a valiant attempt at getting the quilting UFOs under control - or am I????)

Well - it is time to nip this obsession in the bud. I am very afraid that it will end like all my others - I will get a good start and then it will peter out due to lack of time!!!!!!!!!!!!

You see - a while back I found this book and purchased it. And yes - it has sat on the shelf for a couple of years. 

Then I found this book at the library - don't you LOVE that title. Of course - it sat here for 2 months and had to be returned to the library. Now I have requested it again so I can actually read it this time.

What a perfect title for my dilemma

As I was transferring the data, I saw this on the screen. Instead of putting a date - it said "A LONG TIME AGO". Does that mean - so long ago - it can't calculate the date??????

The only pictures I have left on my computer are the pictures that I edited for the blog. The originals are on the external drive. Now I have to figure out how to backup that external drive. I did manage to start sorting the pictures on the G drive (the external drive). I deleted some, started creating the file structure to sort them. I'll delete more and create tags as I get like things together. There are files buried within files - it is quite a mess to say the least. BUT - I was able to find the pictures that I took yesterday and wanted to blog this morning so that is good news!!!!!!!!!!!!


While not remembering all those things that are lost that I can't find - I guess if I can't remember, then it isn't lost. BUT - I did find something that I needed. Technically it wasn't lost, I just hadn't taken the time to find it. But while I was waiting for the last of the pictures to be moved this morning (and not wanting to confuse the computer), I decided to do something else. So now the "lost" receipt is found!!!!!!!!!!!!!


I was threatening to buy a MAC the other day because of the performance of my computer. However after removing the 900 pictures from the memory card and clearing all those photos off the hard disk - well it is like I have a new computer. Sorry Apple - you are not getting more money from me.


Yesterday was an absolutely GORGEOUS day. It was warm, it was sunny, it was the PERFECT day to be outside. We started by hitting Rona so I could buy a new wheelbarrow. My other one had a broken handle and would probably have cost more to get fixed, than to get a new one. Then home to hit the garden. I am NOT much of a gardener and I have NEVER been in the garden in March.

Getting rid of the grass. I love the grasses, but they are very hard to cut down in the spring. After  I finished, I remembered I have TWO in the backyard - so will tackle the other one another day. 

Look how clean that yard looks!!!!!!!!!!!    M was even out there picking up leaves and sweeping off the stones. 

I notice that we have a BIG problem. The rabbits are NIPPING off the buds of everything they can reach

Hard to see, but yes - they are getting every bud within their reach. 

This one - they can't get to the top - so just the bottom is nipped off. Sparky is going to have to become an OUTSIDE dog

This part of the garden is bone dry. I need to find some super arid plants to put there. It gets a lot of sun and not much will grow there. Any suggestions for DESERT like plants????

The side garden which is usually neglected EVERY YEAR. This year it has already received attention. At least on the right hand side. The left was a bit muddy and a bit of ice so couldn't do much there. 

The gas man is always complaining about the bushes around the meter so I got out the pruners and SNIPPED AWAY. Problem solved for this summer I hope. These bushes grow very fast, but I have never whacked it back this much. 

The entrance to the side garden (or secret garden as I call it). Needs a LOT of tender loving care over the next month to whip that into shape. 

Even the fish were out yesterday. I notice at least FOUR black ones and lots of gold ones. I also see that lily pads are  started to grow. Yikes - this is going to be a huge mess this spring to get that pond cleaned out and the edge fixed.

 While sorting pictures yesterday, I came across a folder marked LANDSCAPE (which I knew was there) and look what was inside.......................

And look - the QUILT is almost done. Yes - ALMOST DONE. The school house block is done - had to do that while I waited for the computer to do something. Just ONE MORE HOUSE to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    A few trees (get my green thumb out again) and then sew the pieces together and sew the borders on. I have the PERFECT backing just waiting to be made up and then to find some binding. Then I can put another $10 quilt to bed - well at least in the TO BE quilted pile

Yesterday I took a couple of hours to just browse in the stores - something I rarely do for any length of time. It is dangerous to do that!!!!   But one of my favourite shops is Homesense. They get all kinds of eclectic stuff in. You never know what you are going to find. And LOOK WHAT I FOUND......................

I mean - this is GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   and so perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also found this orange oval tin which is perfect for storing quilts in. I got that idea from Jeanne at The Quilt Patch. Her house if filled with baskets and tins which in turned are filled with quilts. There is room for a couple or three quilts in here - but Berke's Easter gift is under that quilt. 

Then I was at The Bay to get something for M (more on that another day) and their outdoor summer stuff is out. Everything is BRIGHT BRIGHT, including this BRILLIANT orange tray which i could not resist.
